I have heard from many sources that the Serenity Novelization written by Keith DeCandido is not very good, and understand all the reasons why. I have also read an excerpt and was not overly impressed.

I am curious to know if any fan fiction writer has attempted to rewrite the Novelization? There is a lot of talented in the Firefly/Serenity community and I think I rather read something done by them. Thank you!

Don't believe anybody else has tried renovelising the screenplay. The author of the novelisation is on here called Krad. If you like it is a matter of opinion - I know plenty of people who do like it.

I actually liked it very much, espcially since there was all kinds of Mal/Inara interaction and angst that was erased right out of the finished film.

Sex and violence on the big screen, where it belongs.

Didn't hear that from me as I sit here
hugging my Serenity novelization written
by KRAD.

KRAD, did you ever think or ask anybody
about doing an audio book of the Serenity
Novelization. Heard from many sources
that you have a good voice.

Movie novelizations rarely have audios done with them because there generally isn't time. Novelizations are produced very very quickly, and there usually isn't enough lead time between when you get the script and when the audio has to be released (in order to maximize sales, the audio would need to be released when the book was, which is in September 2005).

In any case, Simon & Schuster Audio likely still has the rights to it, but I doubt they'd be interested in doing it at this point, since if they started now, the soonest it would come out is spring 2007, a good year and a half after the optimal time to release it.

Thanks for the kind words about my speaking voice. Anybody who's going to be at Dragon*Con will get several chances to hear it.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I really enjoyed it! And hey the author is right here, so now I can ask... Did you get to consult with any insiders about this? Do you know what Joss thinks of it? Are the character thoughts and emotions you put in considered to be canon? (I loved it, I want it to be canon...)
I especially love River's thoughts about Simon; just the affectionate "too stupid to live" moments. They really cracked me up. And I've told many people that the novel makes a lot of sense out of the different versions of the story told in the pilot ep Serenity and the movie Serenity.

*edit* I also love the way it talks about Zoe communicating so much with tiny facial expressions that Mal picks up on!

As screenplay novelizations go it's fairly good. It starts off a little bit clunky with the Firefly patois - which works quite well for dialog but not so much for the prose - but after the exposition is done the twang mostly sets back in the speechifying where it belongs and a more nuetral voice tends to prevail. I say tends because the author does switch voices fairly regularly in an attempt to give every character's viewpoint. I have mixed feelings on how well that works (the River stuff is fun though she comes out as just a tad too Uber for my taste. The Jayne stuff - well it's not like his viewpoint was ever hard to figure out in the first place.) but I have mixed feelings on the whole novelizing movies ouvre anyway.

It's certainly not the most dire thing I've ever read.

No, although I did have access to a five-page history that Joss wrote (which was also reprinted in the Visual Companion).

I have no idea. He had right of approval, and it was approved with no changes, but you'd have to ask him for sure.

I do know that Nathan Fillion loved it, and said so at at least two conventions....

My knee-jerk answer to questions about "canon" is "Who cares?" If you loved it, that's all that matters.

Well, that's all Gina Torres. I'm just transcribing....

PLATONIST

The novelization is a fairly valid interpretation of plot and characters. There is ample character POV that is hard to convey in a two hour movie format. Equal time is given to characters that we all know and love like Wash, Zoe, and Inara.(I think we can agree that they got short-changed in the movie)

I don't have any reservations recommending this book. It's an easy read and doesn't stray far from canon. If you're a fan it will keep your interest and that's all it needs to do.

But, what do I know? I'm just a lowly literature specialist working for a large school district.

Have to admit, I, er, used the novelisation as a piece of research material as much as I did the OVC or the transcripts. It was a deal easier than trying to run the BDM and catch points.

Did you find that the vernacular stayed with you after you finished writing? Just curious, is all.

Sadly yes, much to my girlfriend's chagrin.

(Mind you, said girlfriend is also a Firefly fan, but still....)

Amen! I'm working on a fanfic right now that's so un-canon it'll probably make everyone frickin' squirm...but I hope some won't mind and might even love it!
