This is probably really old news to some of you, but I thought it was worth sharing with those of us, like me, who have only a passing knowledge of science.

Yeah, I know it's really messy. But, like I claimed, my knowledge in science is feeble, and I didn't know how to clean it up.

Yeah, that's at least a thousand times better. Thanks again Haken! At this rate, does anyone doubt that we will have "Firefly capabilities" 500 years into the future? I myself am torn...

OR, try this:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/olmedia/365000/video/_365198_ghosh7am_vi.ram

The real audio feed talks about what real warp drive space travel would entail, and how it might be made more possible if we could implement the the concept of actual tardis travel.

You didn't ask for it, but as a loyal Dr. Who fan, here is my text version of own famous Dr. Who impression:

monotone, growing louder: exterminate! exterminate! EXterMINATE EX TER MIN ATE!!!!

British female voice: Doctor! Doctor! Have you seen the Doctor???

theme song, sung with nasal-rhytym-effect: needle-de-needle-d-needle-dee-needl-neeedl-deelde
wa wa waaaaaaa
waaaaaaaa wa waaaaaa
wa waaaawa aaa

THE END

Thank goodness I'm not trying to make my living by doing impressions! ;)

I sure miss The Doctor. He's not showing on any channel I get via Time Warner Cable's sucky analog cable service, the bastards~!

on FIREFLY, when are we gonna get a REAL NEWS POST???? Come'on guys! Give us some real MOVIE news, or something good!

Good article, Van Den Broeck is author of a couple papers on this subject that appear to get around most of the objections made by others. It should be noted that the ojbections were primarly technical. That it would require too much energy to produce a thin enough warp bubble. He seems to have solved that problem

FYI
I found Chris Van Den Broeck's paper on the Los Alamos web site, for those who wish to read it for themselves...

SIMON: What happens if they board us?
ZOE: If they take the ship, they'll rape us to death, eat our flesh, and sew our skins into their clothing
and if we're very very lucky, they'll do it in that order.

If you've got a head for the math, would recommend you go through the papers cited by this article. The Ford and Phenning papers are arguments against it, and can be found on the websites for the journals mentioned, as well as on LANL.

There is also a paper that tells what the warp bubble would look like, let me dig through my files at home and find it. Since light always follows geodesics, a warp bubble would distort that light path. But a cool thing is that it does not black out the universe on the other side of the light barrier. Weirdly enough, it looks like you are traveling slower than light, from inside the bubble.

Here it is. (Ain't the web shiny?)

There is also this paper:
http://xxx.lanl.gov/abs/gr-qc/0202021
one of the other arguments against warp drive that the outside of the bubble was disconnected from the inside, meaning that once you turned it on, you could not send a signal to turn it off and be stuck. This seems to have solved that problem as well.

Now all we need are somethings to alter the manifold. Any thoughts?

Gotta throw this in real quick as I wander off to work..

Dunno about warp drive, but impulse drive CAN, and HAS, been done.

DS1 used an ion engine similar in all respects to what's generally referred to in the sci-fi community as an "impulse engine".

Built it, ran it, DID it- yep.
Here's the specs and whatnot.

Enjoy!
