The trailer was so bad my eyes are bleeding. How can you take the greatest show ever made and make such a lousy trailer out of it?!

Cool Dr Who gif by the way (David Tennant has become one of my favourite doctors in the history of the show).

Not bloody likely. Although I'm sure there wondering where that big gaping hole in their viewers came from.

If they cancel BONES or HOUSE I'm leading the revolt.

Yah, House goes, I go (as it's the only fox show I watch). My mom got me to watch an ep when I visited her a few months ago... I got the season 1 dvd set and started recording eps of season 2.

I had made it a rule to ignore fox no matter what they put on, good or bad. I was done with fox till mom got me hooked on House.

When fox DOES succees in making something worth watching, I'll eventualy see it on DVD (with the exception of House which is too good. I can't help watching while in th e back of my mind worrying that it will get yanked for no apparent reason...).

I will admit that when I first saw this trailer back in 2002, it made me WANT TO WATCH THIS SHOW.

We can all criticize it now, 4 years later, with all the episodes and a movie under our belts, but honestly, that promo did actually get some folks (and future Browncoats) to tune in.

I was interested in the 'girl in a box'.

You know, I just keep doing this and I get teased for it a little... but this is what the vid contest we talked about is for.

How would you advertise Firefly? Can you take scenes from the eps and do better than F*X did?
How would you market this to folks who have never ever seen it and make them want to see it? Hook them as F*X was trying to do back then.

We're gonna put those vids on youtube and myspace... if folks will please make them. We need them.

OnT: The trailer was horrible.. Nathan was handsome though. Teasing.. I'm just teasing.

Sadly when the show first came out I was playing chess on Friday nights. So that gave me no opportunity to even see the show if the commercials had even made it look good. This is going to make me seem really computer illiterate (which I am) but what program do you need to get clips out of the show or movie? Are there more than one? Just curious because I like doing stuff like this.

I know nothing, and am as stupid as the day I was born concerning vid editing. So, when I’m an idiot, I turn to the internet, as always.

Video Tutorials
http://www.atomiclearning.com/moviemaker2
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech/videogetb.html
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech/index.html
http://www.alter-idem.com/index.php?now=5

I found this outline on an old thread, very interesting reading. Good starting point, specific to music vids, but parts can apply to the trailer project as well.

Originally posted by ImEarly:

CONCEPT
A video concept is a deceptively simple thing. The best way to describe it is as a vision. What you want the vided to be, how you want the viewer to feel, what you want them to think, to understand. In short, why you're making the video. This is hardly an exhaustive discussion, so what is possible goes far above and beyond what I make mention of. It should also be noted that sometimes a concept doesn't need to be stronger than a video and a song - not every video needs a strong concept. Attempting to strengthen a concept in a video that doesn't need it can kill the video. That said, when to apply the concept and when not to is a matter of taste for the editor. After all, the overall goal of any video is to communicate something, right?

STORYTELLING
The idea here is both very restricted and very open-ended, depending on what story you want to tell and how you want to tell it. Some videos retell the story, others tell entirely new stories. There's a large area in between, where the story is told but changed or a twist is added.

SYNCH
Synch is the core of the editing process itself. It is the connection between music and video. Without synch, you have video, and you have music, but no real connection between them.

MUSICAL
AKA Beat synch. This is where you cut, fade, use effects in time to the music. While sometimes simple to execute, this can get very complicated very rapidly. Many songs will have more than one musical line going at a time, and sounds of varying volume and tone. As an editor, you have to pick what you think is important, and synch to that. Sometimes the music itself presents a clear lead line to work with, but this is frequently not the case. What you show, how strongly you show it, and how you show it are all choices to be made. Most videos make use of beat synch heavily. To ignore the music itself is considered extremely bad form, most of the time. Without extremely good reason, such as comedy, the video ending, etc., missing a significant change in the music is considered a major slip-up on the part of the editor.

LYRICAL
AKA Literal synch. In short, you match what is being said to what you show. There are varying degrees of lyrical synch. The connection between what is said and what is shown may be readily obvious, heavily symbolic, or nearly anywhere in between. One type that deserves special mention is the comedic association: an association made specifically to make fun of something or someone, or something absolutely ridiculous. The associations should be ones that the viewer can understand, though. If the associations are so strange or symbolic that the viewer can't understand them, then the editor has likely slipped up. Unless they're trying to make an incomprehensible video, that is.
A second type that deserves special mention is lip-synching. This is where a character (or characters) mouth movements are matched to the lyrics such that the character (or characters) appear to be singing or speaking. It is considered good form to lip synch entire lines at a time, with partial lip synch being somewhat looked down on.

EFFECTS
There are two schools of thought on effects, one at either end of a broad spectrum. One school holds that effects should only be used to further the concept of the video. The other school holds that effects should be used just because they look cool. I’m going to refer to these as the meaningful camp and the appearance camp. Most people, it should be noted, are somewhere in between, using effects to further their musical sync.

MEANING (aka pretentious artiste)
The point of view here is somewhat more complicated that of the other camp. The idea is that effects should only be used in order to heighten the impact, strengthen the message, or somehow enhance the emotions felt by the viewer. This sometimes leads to symbolism, and other things that frequently only make total sense to the editor.

APPEARANCE (aka “Shiny!!!!”)
The point of view of this camp is pretty simplistic: if it looks cool, go for it. No meaning required. The effects don’t need to be there for any conceptual reason, but they look cool, so why not?

MUSICAL SYNCH
Most effects are used for musical synch. When the audio doesn’t justify a hard cut, or a hard cut won’t do, an effect is frequently what fits the bill. Color shifts, freeze frames, inversions, crossfades, and more are commonly used for musical synch.

AVISynch is the only way to properly edit Vobs in a serious editor.

If you don't know what AVIsynch, then take the time to read this:

http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech/amvappavisynth.html

You'll thank me later.

So you're a bounty hunter.
No, that ain't it at all.
Then what are you?
I'm a bounty hunter.

OT:
I found this and decided to include it because there’s so much that can be done with the right still images.

Ugh.

You could tell just by the "Yeah, it's out there" that Fox was dead set against the show from the beginning. The tone of the narrator's voice? Just hollered 'Don't take this show seriously' till the viewers' ears bled. All I can say is, if they ain't kicking themselves now, I'll do it for them.

I don't think anyone has brought this little fun fact up yet, but they even got there own fictional facts wrong. 400 years in the future, year 2456 A.D.
Oh well just another instance of the suits not giving half a good gorram.

From my own experiences with marketing departments (not within the TV/movie biz though), my guess would be that they skimmed a half-page synopsis of the show, read brief descriptions of each of the main characters (probably going "who the puts this many main characters in a, a, ...what sort of show is this again?!" the whole time), and then fast forwarded through the pilot until they found the brief clips they could use for the trailer.

The "Out there? Oh, it's out there!" line just *screams* a marketing meeting where everyone was confused from the get go. They didn't understand the show, they didn't understand how you could have cowboys in space, they didn't understand if it was suppose to be comedy, or drama, or action, or what. ('Course, actually watching the pilot might have given them a clue on that front.) So they figured, well, the best we can do is market it on its weirdness. It'll be cancelled by Christmas anyway -- after all, who would watch something like this?! -- so lets not spend any more time on it than we already have.

I have yet to meet someone in entertainment marketing who knew what the hell they were doing. I believe that good, talented, intelligent marketing people, who are devoted to understanding the product they are marketing, actually do exist. I've just yet to find a single one. Every single one I've ever met, without exception, has had a poorly disguised contempt for the product. It's difficult to market a product to the people who would like the product, if you yourself hate both the product and anyone who would like said product.

I don't know much about the marketing business myself, but my dad is a professor and every year his students participate in a marketing contest with other colleges. His school won for a few years straight, up until this other professor he worked with retired and the job was given to some newbie who didn't know how to advertise for Their school lost that year. My theory is that the Fox marketing commitee employees hired were relatively new to their job and had no clue in hell what they were doing. Either that or they were dropped on their heads as a child. Or they didn't even bother to watch the pilot. Or they didn't realize that Jayne is hot enough to attract as many women to the show as they could ever want...and if not him Mal...and if not him Simon...etc...(I don't know how significant this is but I thought I would share)

werrrgh..."space cowboy"...my poor Mal.....and "space hooker", that got repeated in several interviews with the cast about the show and in one of the word-associations in an interview, Nathan himself said it all: "Poor Morena!"

ps FOX SUX

I totally refuse to move to the smallish community with afordable housing down the road a little ways because it is called "Fox" (tho I think for the critter, not the stupid network)

LOL! I quite nearly moved into a community named "Mandyville" but barely managed to avoid it. Anyone who's a fan of The West Wing will know that I narrowly escaped never being heard from again!

I agree about the wrestling, but if the new series is Eureka I must humbly disagree. The pilot movie was well-acted, well-directed, cleverly written, and entertaining on every level.

I don't begrudge Sci-Fi making good shows; it isn't as if they own the rights to Firefly/Serenity. They'd have to negotiate for that, and pay F-X royalties for the use; can't blame them for putting that funding into projects they own free and clear.

Still--I could think of worse homes for the 'Verse.
