I saw Dead Man's Chest opening night and a few nights ago I watched Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl the other night and I noticed how it had a few things in common with Firefly. Indulge me if you will.

First, if you remember the first pirate movie when Jack and Elizabeth are stranded on that island Jack talks about what the Pearl really is...freedom. As we all know that's what Serenity is, not just transportation but a home, and those pirates seem to think of the sea as more of a home than land.

The bond of friendship is another common theme. Joss is really good at putting strange personalities together and making everything work out. Look at Buffy as a prime example. Going back to pirates, an odd combo is Will and Jack becomming best friends, although with their fair share of complications along the way.

I guess in writing all this my theory is to compare pirates and firefly, because the first pirates was one of the top grossing films of that year, and this pirates movie (although critics are split in 2 when evaluating)will also do well. This could also be a very good conversion tool since they have similar themes. Yes yes they are very different movies, but hey, they are both good quality. Part of me wants to know why I love Firefly so much but part of me loses myself because it doesn't matter, it's the best show ever and why doesn't always matter. Post your own thoughts and responses if ya like. I like to hear different perspectives on things.

IsaacS, I've seen "Curse of the Black Pearl" but I haven't seen "Dead Mans Chest" as of yet. The first one was very good though. I liked it.

The "pirate" connection between Firefly and the pirate ships of old Earth That Was is a correct one.Serenity is a pirates ship. Just because they do the honest job on occation doesn't make them any less law-breakers that the pirates of old. It's a big cruel verse at times but I guess Mal and crew follow more along the lines of Robin Hood.

Those ships being the crews home is so very true when you consider that taking two steps out your front door and you're either in water over your head or out in deep space and dead.Yep those boats are their home. Would be rather neat though to wake up each morning with a different view outside the window.
