I know that what I am about to write is blasphemy. BLASPHEMY! But think about this for a moment. If the stars of Firefly that we all know and love weren't available for Firefly, and you had to pick any actor/actressess to play the crew, who would they be? Assuming that the people you pick were in their prime. I'll start...

Mal--Harrison Ford (Who else, really?)
Inara--Femke Jenssen
Simon--
River--The girl from Wild Things/Party of Five/Studio 54. I can't remember her name.
Kaylee--Hillary Duff (I don't know enough teenage actresses, let alone one THIS sunny.
Book--
Jayne--The guy from Resevoir Dogs who cut the cop's ear off. (Can't remember his name either.)
Zoe--
Wash--Tom Hanks

Try this. This is freaking tough. There's a reason why many of these are left blank.

My bad. This HAS been discussed before. I gotta say, though. Some of those ideas were better than mine.

This is a bit different with the timelessness of "Assuming that the people you pick were in their prime."

Not trying to squelch your thread.

Maybe it's been done, but hell I haven't got anything better do to. How about Tex Cobb as Jayne.

Who's Tex Cobb? Where might I have seen him?

Tex Cobb is a former heavyweight boxer turned actor. His most famous moment is taking a 12 round (maybe 15, I forget)pummeling by Larry Holmes. He led with his face the entire fight but the Easton Assain couldn't even knock him down. It was an incredible display of toughness and will. As far as acting credits go, he was the bounty hunter in Raising Arizona.

Oh, yeah. I know that guy. He was in a few other things too, but I can't think of what. You really think he'd make a good Jayne? He's kind of, well, ugly. No offence to Mr. Cobb, or anything.

Mr. Baldwin is pretty good looking guy; Mr. Cobb, not so much so. I think as far as ruthless mercenaries go, they fit the same bill, but Tex Cobb didn't first pop into mind when I thought about who could fill Jayne's shoes.

TOM SIZEMORE! Is that the name of the guy I couldn't remember when I first started this thread from Resevoir Dogs? Wasn't he also in Bringing out the Dead and Strange Days? He would be a good Jayne.

I wasn't considering looks, just tough mercenary type. If looks ain't needed Tex would do fine.

Yeah, He's certainly tough, no doubt about it. Doesn't he hold the record for losing the most matches WITHOUT actually being knocked down or knocked out? I know he holds a record for something that has to do with being an unpunishable fighting machine.

I'm not sure what records he holds. But the fight he had with Larry Holmes caused Howard Cosell to stop announcing boxing matches, and boxing councils to no longer sanction 15 round bouts.

A really out there like try,

Book - Clint Eastwood

Wash - Will Smith

Jayne - Vin Diesel

Mal - Val Kilmer

Inara - Claire Danes

Kaylee - Sandra Bullock

Zoe - Angelina Jolie

River - Amber Benson

and some others

Badger - Johnny Depp

Niska - Gene Hackman

I do think the original cast shouldn't be messed with, but hey....

I am still having a mental blank with Simon,

I did think of James Masters, more from his Northern Exposure role than Spike from Buffy.

He is a tough one...

I said it myself, it's tough to come up with them. I do like Clint Eastwood as Book, though. Pale Rider was a great movie, not as good as The Outlaw Josie Wales, but still a great movie.

You know who else wouldn't be bad as Book? Gene Hackman. Didn't he play an ass-wooping preacher in something?

I love Gene Hackman too,

but I like him best when he plays the bad guy,
really carries that type of role well.

Josie Wales is one of my favs

I was picturing Clint from Unforgiven, the part where he is soaking wet, it from the rain and looks across the table at a bottle of whisky and starts to shake. Timeless...

Yeah, that shaking scene is pretty damn good.

I liked the part when he was walking through the whore-house that he had just cleaned out and shot that wounded guy in the stomach at point blank range for simply laying on the ground, moaning. THAT is something you don't see a hero do too often in movies. Boy, that catches you by surprise and leaves you blinking at the TV screen.

Come to think of it. Morgan Freeman would make a pretty good Book.

I thought Morgan Freeman was the best part of Bruce Almighty, looked like he was having fun playing God.

" You just shot an unarmed man "

" Well... he should have armed himself, if he was going to decorate his bar with my friend "

Very hard to think of anyone else in that role.

Maybe Clint could be Mal's long lost pappy...

Morgan Freeman could definitely play book.
I know Angelina Jolie was suggested (in this thread as Zoe) but I think she could play either Inar or Kaylee too.
What about Sigourney Weaver as Zoe? Definitely fits the mold as a "Warrior Woman."

Yeah, definite warrior woman in Alien/Aliens. Whenever I think Sigorny Weaver, though, I think Ghost Busters.

How about Lucy Lawless as Zoe and Johnny Depp as Simon?

Maybe you'll knock this one right down, but I'll put it out here anyway. What about Neil Patrick Harris as Simon? I think he could capture that awkwardness that Sean Maher does so well.

I love the cast as it is, but if they needed a new Shepherd Book, I could be encouraged to volunteer.

Of course, one could contemplate Dennis Hopper as Book.

I could also see Matt Damon as Simon, all these picks are good actors. They each would bring something abit different to the character though.

Its actually pretty impressive what a fine group of actors we have on Firefly. Some fine actors have been mentioned on this thread, but very few of them would I consider as alternatives for FF characters. The original cast has done some wonderful work.

How could anyone even contemplate replacements for the cast they are all exceptional.

However, maybe the Olsen twins could make an appearance somehow. :)
