I'm going to be in England at the time of the Serenity 3 convention... which also happens to be the weekend of the start of the Jane Austen festival...

What to do, what to do???

Hmmm... I'm sensing that my dilemma might be foreign to my fellow brown-coats.
If it helps, another Jane (Ms Espenson) refered to this Jane (Ms Austen) in the commentary to 'Shindig'...

Are there no other 'bilingual' browncoats out there?? Or perhaps one with a working knowledge of sci-fi conventions and/or literary festivals who can assist? (I've never been to either.)

Since you are going to be in England I suppose you will need an English to English dictionary. Now I can't help you with that but I'm sure there are a few Brits around here who will be able to assist you.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I guess it really depends on what your idea of fun is. I know that Jane Austen has humor for those who can understand all that flowerly language (I am not very good at working through it myself; it irritates me) and I'm sure it would be interesting to talk to others who "got it". However, the people at Serenity 3 would also "get it" and would also likely be younger and less likely to talk in lingo from the last century. Forgive me if that's a generalization.
For me the only book that might cause a dilema would be Hitchhiker's Guide, but as Firefly is a more recent obsession and I don't know of any Douglas Addams festivals, it would likely be a moot point.
Anyway, to sum up; Jane Austen festival is likely to be drier. Whether you consider that a good thing is a matter of personal taste.

Why not merge the two events, and make it a Jayne Austen festival?

Personally i love Jane Austen but I'm thinking as it's a weekend festival, if travel isn't too big a hassle, I'd go to both. If travel's an issue I'd go to Serenity and see if I could find anyone I knew who was going to the Jane Austen one and have them bring a few things back :)

Which begs the question of just how victorian literature would be different if Jane had been packing Vera?

this is the thing...if the Jane Austen festival is only a weekend, and the same weekend as Serenity 3, then as much as you would enjoy that it wouldn't be worth it.

Conventions like Serenity 3 are always very short and intense, to leave for even a few hours would mean missing meeting some of the BDHs, missing Q&A sessions (my favorite), and basically missing the whole reason you scheduled the visit in the first place.

OTOH Jane Austen will not be attending the festival in her name, so you could go to that another year, when it isn't the exact same weekend as this.

In fact if you are going to be in England a few days before or after Serenity 3, you could enjoy your own private Jane Austen festival (I did this once) by going to Bath (well worth a visit even if you aren't a JA fan, because of Roman ruins and beautiful gardens), followed by a visit to Winchester (Jane Austen died there and was buried in the Cathedral, people leave roses on her grave almost every day of the week).

Enjoy your trip!

Theres a Jane Austen Festival? Argh! Quandry!

Erm, Embers has it right, I would say, Get to S£ while the cast are still pretty and do JAF another year that doesn't clash. And Bath is beautiful, and you could always specially dedicate a holiday to doing a Jane Austen Pilgrimmage. (many do it, from the Chawton (?) house to bath and everything, I think she has a museum somewhere)

If thats not enough, I promise to bring my P&P DVD, and we'll squeeze in a few hours of Mr Darcy whilst others are doing that whole sleeping thing. We'll wear bonnets as well if it would help you feel more festive. And eat Kendall mint cake. (Mint cake has absolutely nothing to do with Jane Austen, I've just discovered I love it and can't get enough.)

As a fellow Jane addict, I feel your pain, but S3 is the way to go.

In that case - I shall see you at Serenity 3, I am looking forward to the mint cake (never had that before, am intrigued!)... wonder if any of our BDHs are into P&P? Wouldn't that be fun?

See you in London! (I'm getting excited... must book the tickets today.

One answer (boring) would be that Jane's writing was a little like carrying Vera into social situations... but imagining Jane with an actual Vera... wow... if she wielded it (her) the way she handled a pen... scary!

Jane Austen all the way.

So far ahead of her time. without her, there would have been no science fiction and by implication, no Firefly.

Persuasion, when Louisa jumps off the harbour wall. We can rebuild you. The innovative use of slow motion signifying running very fast. It's all there.

Don't forget to get a London A-Z street guide. If you're going to be out and about in London, you'll really need it. One of it's more invaluable things is a map of the Underground.

Have a lovely time at which ever you decide.

While I'm not an Austin fan, I can understand your dilemma. Heck, the first day I spent in Dublin I spent half of it at the Writer's Museum.

Yes - can't stand Wickham, all he ever does is feel sorry for himself and he is incapable of loyalty to anyone other than himself...

At least Jayne (after some persuading!) can show loyalty outside himself. And he doesn't complain.

What about splitting up the Collinses to set Charlotte up with the Doctor? I've always had a sneaking sympathy for Charlotte - especially as portrayed in the most recent movie. We could send Mr Collins the way of Saffron.

oh yes, absolutely....
Lady Catherine had encouraged Mr. Collins to take up beekeeping, so of course he ran right out and set up a couple of hives but handled them clumsily (as he does everything) and he is stung to death...
but of course while he is suffering a lingering painful death, Simon comes to treat him and cannot help but appreciate Charlotte's many fine qualities.

One of which is her ability to sweep a man off his feet without waiting for HIM to make the first move.

Kaylee having already been stolen from Simon because Darcy has no problems stepping up and telling a girl how deeply he loves her (and Darcy learned his lesson about complaining about her low origins, so he manages to not insult Kaylee with his proposal).

Oh, what a dilemma! Believe it or not, this morning I had on "Our Mrs. Reynolds" and watched the extras on the Serenity DVD. Right now, I'm watching my Pride and Prejudice DVD.

Can you go to both? Is the Jane Austen festival a one time thing, or every year? I do not envy your position!

Brilliant, I tell you!

Do you think that Badger might be tempted by Anne De Bourgh's high breeding? Or than he could con Lady Catherine into approving? Or maybe we're not giving her enough credit - she might rebel against Lady Catherine and run off with Fess Higgins...

Mal would definitely be the cake if he was going to be there!

I think Inara would be happiest in a position of relative wealth and power, but still weith opportunities to explore freedom and be a little unconventional... a bit like on Serenity!
