I've always thought this since I first watched Serenity, is that the Twins are a replacemenet for Badger. The biggest giveaway is that they have a cockney accent(for our USA brothers, people from London) just the same as Badger. The way they verbalise with Mal is also very Badger. Maybe Mark Sheppard was busy on other projects???. So Joss needed a replacement. As you can see I am a big Badger fan. It's a shame he wasn't in the BDM. What do you guys think?

I like to think that, as the twins get bumped off in the original script, Joss didn't want to kill Badger (which was, after all, going to be his own part).

Or he just wanted to keep his options open. It wouldn't have taken much to rewrite it for Badger (or maybe it was vice versa).

Yeh I always liked Badger. I think if the series continued we would have seen alot more of him. He isn't like Niska who is a real nasty bit of work but he is more like Mal but a bit more dumb :)

What I'm thinkin' is that Badger's moving up in the world. He oughtta be in the sequel.

Fanty/Mingo, Lee Chen, most of the other big movers and shakers of the criminal underworld are now kaput, thanks to the Operative. That makes for a power vacuum. Bloke plays his cards right, he could end up with the whole 'verse in his pocket.

And where would that leave our merry band of rogues?

Badger is a cool guy, but hes in it for the profit. Killing him off would have done the feds no good. We all know he would have turned Serenitys crew in for the money had he known Simon and river were aboard. He wanted to get rid of Mal,Zoe and Jayne in the pilot eps.

"You stay here and I just know the feds will track you down."

He may have a small streak of honor, but it ain't much. But he is a very likeable guy. To get on his good side. Adopt an accent( if you haven't one)pretend to be from the old homested and tell him what a useless bit of dirt he is. He'll like you after that.

What happened? He see your face?

I always thought Joss maybe came up with the "Fanty's prettier" line to show Mal's wit and built the twin char.s around it.

...and surely Firefly the series would not have been the same without Mark's contributions. Would love to see him come back…

FYI, all the comic books are now available in a single Trade Paper Back book called Serenity: Those Left Behind. So if you can't get the individual comics, pick that up. I just received mine yesterday from Amazon.

Thanks KHAZARA will do.

btw this guy( the book store owner) was a big Buffy fan years ago. He tried to get me interested then. I don't know what it was but I just didn't care to watch the show. My loss.
Anyway I'm wondering now if buying the comic from him will set off a firefly spark. I'm curious to see if hes a fan.

In the commentary Joss said why he chose to have identical twins, I guess you could argue that he made that choice after he found out he couldn't get Badger but there's a problem with that.

Badger meets in private places. That means two things, the screen wouldn't be there and neither would River.

That would mean that River would have had to be triggered at a different place and time, which would mean that if the Badger was supposed to be in the movie his role in the movie would have been different than the one played by Fanty and Mingo.

So like all characters the twins are simply a contrivance to move the plot forward:)

Also you do realize that the Feldman Twins and Mark Sheppard are both from Ireland. So the accent was kinda original for all of them.

I really enjoyed the twins in their short scenes and short lives in the BDM. I don't know much background about Serenity or FF except what I've seen in interviews and read on the net. I didn't know Badger had turned down a part in Serenity or for what reason. What I do know is that writters of sf/fantasy are in a much free-er range to write than someone writtng about history or westerns or war and so on.

With Serenity/FF being a space western Joss and others can write and improvise as they see fit. Any number of characters can be introduced and killed off at any time.Theres always something or someone to step in and fill the gap.

It was brilliantly creative how aliens were introduced into the series without there really being aliens. The whole UFO thing had its legs knocked out from under it. "What was that,in the sky there?"... "It was a spaceship you gorram fool!"( no quote, just talking about the alien scene in "The Message")

Anyway these writters are skillful and talented enough to understand the ebb and flow of entertainment. Characters can enter and exit in a manner that will allow them to return (with the help of a good writter) and not miss a beat.

I for one am ready for Serenity Part 2 where we learn Fanty & Mingo have returned and it was Dingo & Slingo their doubles that were killed off. I mean come on, in their kind of business who wouldn't have a double?

Thats just it. There were no aliens. Just a carnival show. I do think that the writters of that eps were making a statment. There will be no real (space) aliens in the Joss/verse. Therefore if some bright light in the night sky were to be seen it could never be called an alien UFO. Now a secret Alliance/government test of some sort, with plot/cover up to mask. Well thats a whole other animal.
