This may be old news, but it's pretty interesting. Serenity was added to a website that indicates the relative scale of spaceships.

http://www.merzo.net/main.htm

She looks really shiny on the 10 pixels per meter page!

from their update dated:

NEWS APRIL 20 2006

Some updates!
- Added Serenity to the 1 Meter Per Pixel and 10 Pixels Per Meter pages,

Little something I put together when I came across that site:

There's really no point to that picture, but I post it for ... no reason.

Ok, here it is in a format that will show up in the thread, and four pixels wider to accommodate all of the forsaken out there.

I agree, that is a good web-site. I'm glad other Coats have found it! It used to have a forum to discuss which new ships should be added.

I started the Serenity addition thread and I'm happy to say, a fair number of Browncoats and Sci-Fi enthusiasts backed my suggestion. Somebody else actually supplied the pictures.

Sadly the forum is now gone.

Chris, nice chart! I've always been a fan of seeing my favorite ships in the same space. That's what drew me to Starship Dimensions to begin with.

I tried my hand at a chart a while back, posted in the Blue Sun Room. That was before I realized the difference between JPG and BMP

This is the one that really got me:

That is a to-scale meeting of Vader's star destroyer, and the original Enterprise thanks to the very site this thread is about.

I've seen things where they have Star Trek vs. Star Wars, and I just imagine the slaughter that would be.

I'd more like to see Battlestar Galactic meets Star Wars or even S:AAB meets Battlestar Galactica.

I've always found a Star Trek meets anything but Star Trek a bit like mixing oil and water.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Star Trek, I just don't find it compatible with other Sci-fi.

There is on ship on the big page called 'Starplex' from the novel 'Starplex', written by Robert J. Sawyer. Does anyone know anything about this?

But can't you just imagine Kaylee walking through the ship leaving a trail of fingerprints and engine grease?

What would make Star Trek go with anything else is people looking at it in sheer "How the hell can anything be this clean?" awe or disgust and asking for them to repeat that in captain dummy talk.

I don't hate Star Trek either, but I have a feeling that the ship smell sterile and it certainly looks like it is.

That's what would interest me: Star Trek being forced to mix with a realistic universe.

Geordi viciously cleaning off a console after someone who wasn't obscenely clean had touched it. Probably hitting the wrong buttons in the process and sending them into warp, any of them trying to say their techno-babble in plain English when someone finally asked, "What the hell does that mean?"

At least the enterprise has toilets, which is more than I can say for several space ships I've seen on screen.

It always makes me laugh (ok, not laugh, smirk maybe) when I imagine ordinary people walking the Enterprise leaving behind a trail of foot and fingerprints. They couldn't come through the transporters though, those things probably leave the dust behind and turn off the oils that create fingerprints.

When you put it that way... that is something I would actually like to see.

I think Kaylee may actually get along well with Trip. Geordi, on the other hand, I think your depiction is right on the money.

Geordi has replaced his phaser with a bottle of Windex..

Woah, it's nice to be able to see Serenity in relation to other Sci-Fi ships, especially the ones from Star Wars. Only thing missing is the Space Shuttle. :p

I see Geordi as following them around with a phaser in his hand telling them if he touched anything he would turn them into space dust, and then he would turn the space dust into gas. And I would see Jayne as using a console as a mirror, just to screw around.

Yeah, because the engine adds on a lot, and you don't see the inside of the actual engine, just the part that turns it. And I'm surprised it's bigger than the Millenium Falcon, I always thought they were closer in size. Length wise at least.

Well in that case here is a Saturn V, Godzilla, a blue whale, the space shuttle, Serenity, and finally King Kong.

ing%20kong.JPG

It's little things like this that remind you exactly how much they had to enhance King Kong to make him fight Godzilla. Otherwise it would have been like Godzilla vs. Bambi, which was fun but wouldn't have made a good full length movie.

I think I have a side view of the shuttle kicking around. I'll have a look and let you know.

I've tried to collect side views of ships, and have a big collection. No mecha or Japanese Anime, sorry, just Sci-fi T.V. and movies. Where I couldn't find the ship I wanted, I've tried to make it. Wing Commander movie ships are an example.

I'm working on three comparison charts, fighters; shuttles and freighters; and larger ships. I tend to gravitate to the smaller ships like the fighters and shuttles/freighters. they tend to have more character.

The extremely large ships, I find, are big just for the sake of being bigger than the other ships. Freud and Jung would have a field day with the Star Wars Super Duper Mega Really Big Galaxy Destroyers...

"Umm Lord Vader? We've managed to build a ship too big to fit in the Universe..."
"Excellent... now mine is the biggest. Take that, Obi-Wan. NEENER NEENER NEENER!"

The Passenger Dorms (which don't actually FIT!) are in the engine "pod".

So all the workings of the ship (fuel and water storage, thing that makes the outide glow, and the Laundry room...) are fitted in between the Engine Room and the Dorms (not a lot of room...)

Shes a seriously cramped ship (but still better than the Falcon )

Hmm... yeah, the forward opening cargo bay really throws me off when thinking the ships lay out. But yeah, she is cramped. And the designers kept in mind that every piece of space would have to be used well. Like the little push in sink in the crew quarters'.

Well, in the Sovereign and Eclipse's defense, they were intended to be outfitted with versions of the Death Star's superlaser. Between the power requirements and the firing assembly, that's a good chunk of mass right there.

The World Devastators were entire spaceborn refineries and munitions factories, and the Galaxy Gun. . .

Well, okay, that was just excessive (the real weapons were the hyperspace-capable missiles themselves; the gun was just a ginormous railgun to give them an extra jolt of forward momentum when their hyperdrives engaged).

I've heard people talk about it not fitting before, but I've never seen it. Has anyone ever created a 3-d model of the inside of the ship and overlaid it on a model of the outside of the ship so that those of us who are not skilled at visualizing this stuff could see where and how it doesn't fit?

Penguin,
That helps not a bit, I already have those images but it means nothing without seeing the outside if the ship in relation to it, as the ship is curved and those rooms are all at different heights you can't really do that in 2-d.

See what i mean about the dorms not fitting.

Although the one's in the RPG are much more accurate (you can find them on-line SOMEWHERE ...)

Here's a titchy little "photobucket hates big images" one of the RPG deckplans:

Like i said, Photobucket hates big images, and this is VERY detailed...I'll post a link up later...

No actually.

If that is perfectly to scale than I suppose I might, and that's only might. I mean take the picture, take the passenger dorms and put them over the outside of the ship. They fit inside, but if the scale is perfect they only just barely fit.

Obviously it all depends on the height and altitude of rooms near the edge.

ALthough if you wanted to show scale you'd have to put the Falcon overlapping an engine or something on the Serenity (mk 1) Just a tip.

My friend at work wrote this for me. Guess he was making fun of the thread, heh.

Quote:

So, I was thinking. After my last Home Depot run... you’d like to come over and see the replica I built in my back yard. My Dad got these boxes from work. Like seriously, a lot of boxes. But, there’s this vacant lot out back where they’re going to build a house and I made a grid that’s probably 1ft. - 20ft. It’s just big enough. Well, I made a replica of Serenity!!! And you can see that the dorms really don’t fit. She’s small on scale already, but anyway, I’ll get my mom to make us some bacon in the microwave, maybe we can camp out tonight...

Funny thing is, the whole time reading it, I was like "man, this sounds like fun!"

Bummer he was kidding.

So am I the only person who can't see it when not in three dimensions?

It's just that the dorms aren't all at the same hight and it looks (in 2-d) like they'd just squeeze in there if they at the right height.

I'm not saying I don't believe you guys, I just want to know how much sticks out and where it sticks out because I can't visualize it. Everyone else seems to have no problem with it, at least no one else has said, "I don't see it either."
