I have some friends who I would like to introduce to Firefly, but not all of them are as patient as I am, so I'm debating what I should show them first. If you only had 1 hour to 'hook' a friend on Firefly, what ep would you show? I was thinking possible "Out of Gas" since it is such a powerful episode and covers most of the major themes as well as showing glimpses of much of the characters' backgrounds.

My faves are Out of Gas and Ariel, but I don't really think either would be perfect for a new viewer, because I think they depend a lot on the viewer knowing and liking the characters to get their emotional impact. I think maybe I would go with Serenity, part 1, and trust that your friend will be dying to know how it ends.

I have to say Serenity as well... it just ain't right to show it out of order, as we all know. Thank you very much Fox

I would tie that friend to a chair and make them watch "Serenity". Screw the hour ;)

Actually, "Shindig" would be my first choice. One of my favorites. OK, maybe "War Stories"...Ummmm "Out of Gas".....Ok...."Objects In Space"......."Ariel"......

Hell- Keep the friend tied to the chair for all of them. I can't make up my mind.

Our Mrs.Reynolds has worked well for me. For most people I just make tapes in order and say - watch these, beginning to end. But I've had a few people want a quick 40 minutes or so to see if they will like the show. OMR has a good mix of humor and action and each of the characters gets a chance to express themselves.

I've always used Out Of Gas. Unlike most episodes, you don't need to know who the characters are - the episode shows you. It also demonstrates all the best sides of Firefly, the great music, cinematography, acting, story, the drama, the witty dialog...

Not to mention the interesting flashback technique. I'd definitely choose this one over any other one (especially Train Job) when Serenity is not an option.

Yeah, I'd use Out of Gas, too. In a way, it acts as a one-hour pilot. I remember when it first aired, there were some people on this site that thought that it actually WAS the pilot, aired out of order.

And while we're on the subject, I'd like to take the oppertunity to echo the " you" sentiment directed at Fox in an above post. Ruttin' morons can't tell a quality program from their bung hole.

Decisions, decisions, decisions……

I guess I would have to start them at the beginning. Serenity is where we find out “why” people are there in the first place. It sets everything up for the future shows.

I actually thought it was the pilot too, but that was before I'd visited the official site, or any other website.

So really, when Serenity is not an option, Out Of Gas is the only other choice. Then when whoever you show it to becomes a huge fan and demands more, pick up from Serenity and show them in order from there!

And I would have to say, absolutely not War Stories. It was the first episode a friend of mine saw (I watched it with him when it aired). It is no good for introductions, you would not know who the characters are. Great episode once you've been initiated, but never start with it.

Out of Gas definitely. Double flashback structure, character back story, it's all there.

All those episodes have great reasons for showing them first, but I feel obligated to be true to the flowing nature of the story. I would show it from the beginning, and I have.

Personally, I was hooked by 'The Train Job' but I can see how 'Out of Gas' is better in the character background department. My ballot says 'OoG' -- 'Serenity pt.1' -- 'Train Job' in that order hookability.

I hope the DVD set comes out before the holidays. I'm planning on getting a great many people hooked on Firefly by giving them the full DVD set as a gift.

I've used "Our Mrs. Reynolds" twice with guys and snagged them into the club right away. For women, I would probably use "Out of Gas" because it showcases Mal at his most heroic or "Serenity" because I think women are more patient with a developing story - they'd want to know how it all turned out for these people...huh!...and don't we all?!

"Appears they've canceled the show and we're still here. What does that make us?"
"Big damn junkies, Sir!"
"Ain't we just."

Depends on what your up for. If you want your friend to be an instant militant bring-it-back-or-I-kill-you person, start with Heart of Gold. If you want your friend to get the full effect you have to go with Serenity, or Out of Gas. I Say Serenity, but between the two they introduce everyone.

To get hooked all the need is to meet the people, because that’s what the show has, people. If you could do aliens, or vampires, or angels, demons, goldfish, or whatever like these people are done it would be an instant hit IF it was properly promoted. I will stand by that until the population’s average IQ drops below 30.

Be nice, give them the right order.

Our Mrs. Reynolds, no doubts. It is not the best intro to the show, meaning that it doesn't take a lot of time establishing background and such, but it is instantly enjoyable, hilarious as all hell, and the episode that I feel stands best on its own.

Note, this is just to hook someone who's uninitiated. You'll definitely need to have Serenity on hand to show them immediately after OMR is over.
