Let's face it, there will be comparisions to Star Trek, so we may as well start it ourselves.

People may not realize it, but the original
Star Trek was supposed to be "Wagon Train to the Stars." It was much easier to pitch to producers in those days. Westerns were safe, you couldn't go wrong with them. Everybody loved westerns. Today, westerns are just as safe. Easy to understand, simple to use.

Firefly will also be compared to Andromeda (the TV show). There you have a lone ship, with a few people/aliens trying to recreate a fallen federation. Again, they are on the frontier, one ship, no support, a few crewmen doing thier job, against all odds.

If we look hard enough, we can find similarities to a lot of other shows. The important thing, is how "this" show will compare after 5 years or so to all of the others that have come and gone.

Likes to mess with stuffs.

I don't think they'll compare Firefly to Andromeda. They're more different than similar. If anything, it'll probably be compared to Farscape.

I dont think it will be compared either. Andromeda is very low quality, very cheesey. Its Hercules in space. The dialog, the characters, the un-original plots. It could have been much better. but it is this bastardized post-federation collapse concept that has since been wattered down. The show has actualy gotten worse since it started and lost all direction. It belongs in one of those "action packs"

Firefly looks very promising im very eager, but fox has an itchy trigger finger and doesnt get sci fi or genre shows. It canceled the Tic after 5 episodes, and killed futurama. dont forget harsh realms, or space above and beyond. Yet amazingly crap like 80's show is still on. Murdoc needs to fire all the fox executives and find some competint ones...

I agree... Andromeda == campiness to the maximus

With Sci-Fi, the ideas, background, characters, story needs at least half a season to a full season to ... well, get seasoned. Besides, after B5 and Farscape, the sci-fi audience of late has definitely gotten much much more sophisticated.

I'm actually a Babylon 5 fan and one of those who have been waiting a *long* time for some good sci-fi. I haven't seen Farscape so I can't comment on it, and from what little I've seen of Enterprise I just can't get into that show; I need characters that at least *seem* real.

I think that Firefly will be a nice breath of fresh air in the sci-fi genre, and if it gets good promotion from Fox, a good time slot (best bet would be the old X-Files slot) and positive critical acclaim we could be in for a treat.

Remember, Chris Carter's show Millennium lasted three seasons and that was with so-so ratings in a bad time slot. Joss has a great track record, perhaps even more respected than Carter's, at least IMO.

As long as Fox lets Joss do what he does best things should be alright.

The new images conjur memories of Cowboy Bebop, an series from Japan. A *very* good anime series... very stylish and adult-oriented.

personaly i dont see the cowboy bebop comparison. seems more blade runner to me.

i forgot about millenium. that show came out at a different time at fox, back when all they had was the xfiles and the simpsons, so they could keep a so-so rated show around. but look @ what happened to the lone gun men. one season with heavy xfiles support and they still killed it. i bet they kill 24. fox will eventualy be nothing nothing but cops, and shows like america's stupidest this or americas most extreme that... (i.e. americas scariest police chases)

o yeah and also when animals/fish/crimnals/whatever attack shows as well...

When Fish Attack the World's Most Extremely Stupid Cops

You *know* it's coming!

My comparison to Cowboy Bebop come from the non-futuristic style of the clothing, the shot where the Mal and another character are sitting across from eachother with a table seperating them. The kitchen-looking area seems very similar the kitchen area in Cowboy Bebop. There's also the scene with Kaylee looking a lot like the girl in the episode: "Boogie-Woogie Feung-Shui" what with the Asian-style umbrella.

I think the similarities will only compound with the airing of the show. It has a similar plot too... with the vigilante family-unit type group making a living through less than moral venues. Mal's history is a lot like Jet's too... except Jet was a police officer and Mal was a soldier. The Serenity looks a lot like Faye's ship, too (I streching it, I know )

I'm just saying... a Space Western, which Cowboy Bebop obviously was, about a group of social outcasts. No, no similarities at all.

As long as the characters are good, I don't care so much about the trappings of the show - the overall plot or whatever.

I'll keep coming back for great characters and good storylines.

Just a three year anniversary bump for the first firefly related thread on this site started by someone other than Haken.

And, what do you know, there's a reference to Cowboy Bebop .

From the 90s to maybe 2009 or 2010 might have been the best run for scifi space opera, they were slowly pushed out by new style, generations, Fantasy and Witches and Wizard, Harry Potter, gritty tv with crime and drugs, more sleaze than softcore pornography True Blood, the Sopranos, Game of Thrones, period pieces the British aristocratic Downton Abbey, political media commentary with Succession, the Dystopia show Black Mirror . and superhero the Superman is back, Thor, Wonder Woman...Star Wars came back but it was more escapism and less gritty and not a true Western
next they start making superhero tv shows

'Mandalorian' season 1 feels a little bit like Firefly

Is it over for the Hollyweirdos, now that Superhero comicbook cape genre is dying will a Western make a comeback?

Brokeback Mountain, Django Unchained and Blazing Saddles, but no Tombstone (or even the lesser Wyatt Earp in its stead)?

Hard to take that list seriously.
