PHOENIXROSE

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Well, welcome to the 'verse. Always nice to see shiny new faces.
Ummm, the histroy can be very complicated so I'm just gonna point you in the right direction. First, listen to the commentaries and watch every behind the scene feature. Then read the visual cmpanion to the movie; Joss gives a lot of history in part of the intro titled "A Brief History of the Universe Circa 2507 AD". There's also a role-playing book but that's not written by Joss Whedon so I don't know if it would apply.
Anyway after you've done all that you can come back and ask about anything you're still fuzzy on and folk here will be glad to help out.

One summer.
One mission.
One legion of Browncoats.

Starting June 23rd, we aim to misbehave.

I know there are loads of experts about that can point you to all kinds of sources. A good start would be to check out the feature article discussion forum, as that's likely to be chock full of quotes from the man himself, the Jossinator.

What little I know is that Joss was inspired to write the show after reading a book about the Civil War, specifically about the Battle of Gettysberg - and I apologise for probobly spelling that wrong, I'm not American myself. I know the series at a whole deals with the impact of war and individual freedom versus trying to build a "better world."

Something else I'd recommend is listening to the commentaries on the Firefly and Serenity DVDs. Joss especially talks a lot about where his inspiration for the show, the characters and individual episodes came from.

Best of luck with your paper! Could you post it here when you're done? I'd love to have a read.

The Civil War-era book which inspired Joss is called 'The Killer Angels'. As for the Anglo-Sino blend, Joss just took a look at the current rise of China as a world power and extrapolated it into the future.

yes Joss's book is excellent and should give you a really good sense of the why and wherefore of the wonder that is Firefly.

Welcome home, Untitledemz. You're #21020.
You're in good hands here.

FollowMal will probably find you and issue your virtual browncoat.
I'm offering the traditional strawberries and an invitation to the buffet up in the galley.

This place is stuffed full of information and links to other sites with more.

The best source for Joss' vision is the man himself.

I definitely agree w/PhoenixRose:
'Serenity, the Official Visual Companion' is the way to go, Joss goes into a lot more detail there than he ever had a chance to do before....

and we would love to read your essay!

What they all said PLUS (since you're in GD field) you might want to check out the trilogy of comics JW wrote to fill the gap between the end of the series and the movie.

Shindig is a good commentary for the costuming design since the costumer is part of the commentary group for that one.

You might want to also check into Zoic studios since they did the special effects for the verse (and Gallactica, BTW).
