So I was watching the DVD for the (enter appropriate no.) time and was thinking....Being a Brit we had the episodes shown in the correct order (serenity first etc), just how confusing was it having the episodes all over the place when it first aired in the US?

Well...It actually wasn't too bad. As Joss once said, the second episode was written to try to introduce everyone without writing a second pilot. I think it did it's job fairly well. I remember promising when I saw a commercial for it to watch from episode 1, because if I don't, I usually get lost and don't get hooked. I remember forgetting when it aired or that it existed, and stumbling across a little tagline saying Firefly was up next on a Friday night, and remembering. Turns out that was The Train Job. But I thought I was halfway into the season, and was a little upset (I later learned I was watching it from the first air date). IT took me 1 or 2 episodes to get all the characters down, but I was so blown away by the show that most of the information I sucked in from that measly hour and retained a good deal of it. Come next week at that same time, I already knew who half the characters were (though Jayne was one of the last ones I got, because I kept hearing the name and expecting him to be one of the womenfolk). I don't know how hard it was for everyone else, but it wasn't too bad for me. I was HOOKED. It was an obsession halfway into the first episode.

it was very confusing...
the first episode shown was Train Job, which introduces the characters...but so quickly, and there are so many of them, that I felt a little lost and disconnected....

Then most people were missing the few episodes that were aired because it was being pre-empted for sports (I am nuts, so I would stay up until 1am and call the local Fox affiliate station asking "well, will you run it AFTER the game is over?"...so I did see every aired episode). But even those were often out of order so you see something that clearly referenced something we hadn't seen or heard about...

I did get into the show, but only because I knew Joss' work and I was determined to see it all regardless. But it wasn't until finally, at the very end, the last show aired was the two hour long pilot episode...and THEN everyone I knew was all: Oh no! This is great! Why is it being cancelled!?!?!

sigh

What can you do? The network didn't really want the show so they killed it. They can do that.

I'm in the UK too so I've seen the episodes on the right order, but i imagine it would seem a bit more...chaotic...not to have all the explanation of the story/characters from the 2-hour ep. But hey, the people who made the decision to order the episodes in the most ridiculous way possible are also the people who cancelled the show, so I guess its to be expected :P

I didn't have a problem with it. It did go in order for two whole episodes at the start so even without the pilot there was time to get our footing.

I don't know when I first realized it was out of order, but we managed to patch together a pretty good idea of the order on our own, though I was convinced that Objects in Space came before Trash and The Message. Other people tried to talk sense into me but the fact that the scripts were numbered the way I thought it should be didn't exactly help me see the error of my ways.

Other than that I think I had a handle on it.

Sorry, saw this thread and thought a new Order of chivalry was being introduced...it does sound kinda shiny..."Order of the Firely"...merits further thought.

Holding until you get back, Captain.

We need an Order of the Firefly for those special folks that give of themselves or for sharing findings.

For those that saved the Ariel Ambulance. OOF with caduceus.

For all those shiny links. OOF with hypertext commendation.

For the tee shirts. OOF without tags.

More?

You paid money for this sir? On purpose?

DATALESS

I have and had TiVo at the time Firefly first aired, so I never missed an episode when is was first aired. I liked what I saw but started to lose interest when the last few episodes aired until Christmas of 2002 give or take a day when Serenity the orignal pilot aired. I saw this episode and finally got it I thought that episode was awesome. I was a fan at that moment.
I wanted more but I would have to wait until the DVD was released (to get the three unaired 'sodes.) I then was a true fan. I wanted more and then movie (still amazed that it didn't do better.) I think if you watched it the way fox aired it you miss something vital. My Brother watched it with my a was more into it than I but he was not a true fan either. So I say that "The Train Job" fails to do what Serenity the episode or even the Movie does.

Now, "the Firefly," means it would be the actual physical ship, not the show, right?

Could I be, like, Knight of the Catalyzer First Class, or some such?

of course you are exactly right, OiS was originally supposed to be aired before Trash, and the Message...
but Joss Whedon himself felt that the DVD set had more of an emotional impact if you made it an mini arc about River being accepted on board.

personally I agree...when viewed in the DVD set order you have everything come to a 'rest' point,
but if you watch them in order of filming; with The Message as last...then it is just depressing.

IMO

but not as depressing as the order in which Fox aired them, with the pilot episode last....making us gnash our collective teeth in frustration!
