You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Addressing the itch of curiousness, what do y'all think of when you think Fruity Oaty bar?

For some reason, it makes me think of those fruit-filled breakfast bars; always crave some nurti-grain when I hear that damn jingle. I think oatmeal bars with chunks of fruit would make more sense, but that's just not what I think of, I don't know why.

That would be because they're dried, pressed cereals without milk.

If they had real fruit and oatmeal in them they would call them fruit oat bars not fruity oatey bars - and they wouldn't be advertising them in low class dives like the Maidenhead. I strongly suspect artificial fruit flavored protein textured to resemble oatmeal in some form is the more likely description of the ingredients. Lysergic acid dimethylene is nica and all but far too random for the Allience. I suggest a somewhat more controlled drug might be more likely. Something in the quaalude family with an amphetamine kick to keep the worker drones "Happy" and "Productive".

Well, you know, the breakfast bars don't have a lot of real fruit in them either. Or grain. In fact, reading the ingredients the thought going through my head is "These are terrible for me!" It's all sugar and starch an modified enriched puree concentrate gelatin... stuff.
And the Maidenhead was just piping in TV, after all. Maybe they are protein bars of some sort, but I thought those were basically flavorless and eaten in space because they kept well. Not everyone lives in space. Some people get to eat "real" food all the time!

Well that was kind of my point.

You wanna bet advertisers can't choose which screens get their adverts shown on them by 2500. That "TV" is a two way device and advertisers would certainly like to control exactly which commercials get shown to whom as much as possible.

Only the rich ones. See Serenity: The Episode for what a well off (by rim standards) person would do to get a few crates of protein bars.

But they weren't for her. Mal said one would "feed a family for a month." So I'm betting she was going to sell them to others on her little world. The rim probably does subsist on some protein, etc, but real food is still more readily available on a planet.
Plus, like I said, breakfast bars are hardly real food. They could be little fruity snacks for the rim worlders who can't afford apples.

Right, the people who can't afford real food. I must say we do seem to have a very disagreeable way of agreeing with each other.

Haa haa! I love it. Not sure why, but I find that both funny AND a tad unsettlin'.

Does that seem right to you?

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

Judgin from the Alliance's track record with dietary supplements *coughreavercreatingpaxgascough* I would say that we don't really want to know what's in them.

But I vote for a combo of cereal mummy and Nutrigrain bar wth maybe a bit of sweet sugary stuff thrown in for good measure.

Mine is an evil sugar high laugh! Bwahahahaha!

I try not to think about them (gorram earworm jingle) but when I do, I think of granola or muesli glued together with some kind of syrup.

The sugar ought to take care of the mind-blow, but there are combos of cough syrup and stuff which might work, too.

Admittedly, this would be "real" rather than "-y" stuff, but there must be limits to the disguises which could be put on protein powder, even in the 2500s. Mustn't there?

Drat that jingle....

"Cereal mummies"! Bwahaha! XD

I have to say, I haven't given it much thought, but maybe the things really are oatmeal-flavored protein with faux fruit in it.

Actually, it makes me hanker for a Nature's Valley "Fruit and Nuts" bar. Those have honey, too, and real fruit bits, and nuts.

Daaaaamn. Those would be pretty pricey on the rim! :P

But anyway... it's possible the product does not actually exist for purchase on the standard rim worlders' wages. Remember, the main reason the thing was being beamed out was to trigger River's Superhuman Psycho side! :P It wouldn't matter WHAT ad they used, I suspect.
