OK, so this isn't quite Firefly related but I think it is great news for us SciFi fans, and especially Star Wars fans.

It might be old news but:

Original 'Star Wars' films coming to DVD
Unaltered theatrical, digitally tweaked video versions included

Thursday, May 4, 2006; Posted: 8:20 a.m. EDT (12:20 GMT)
The original theatrical versions of the first three "Star Wars" films
are finally coming to DVD on September 12, two years after diehard
fans blasted George Lucas for releasing only the digitally modified
2004 versions of the celebrated trilogy in a boxed collection.

This time, "Star Wars," "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the
Jedi" will be available individually and appear on DVD exactly as they
did in their respective theatrical runs in 1977, 1980 and 1983.

Each release, distributed by 20th Century Fox, will be a two-disc set
that also includes the digitally tweaked 2004 edition.

The DVDs will be available only through December 31.

It was about time!!!

Yeah, but they theatrical versions will only be in stereo and they are not undergoing the restoration process that the 2004 editions did (depending on the person, this could be a pro or con). If you ask me, a set containing the remastered theatrical trilogy, 2004 edition original trilogy, and the new trilogy will probably be out for the holidays 2007...that's just how George plays the game.

It's just that he said they would NEVER be released, so while it's a pleasant surprise to many, I still feel suckered into buying the 2004 edition, ya know?

He'll keep putting them out until we stop buying them. Personally I'm glad I held off on the redone DVDs since this is what I really wanted.

I'm probably gonna get flak for this, but apart from a few moments (like Greedo shooting first) I liked his changes to the special editions. I felt he was able to finally make Mos Eisley how it should have been, and I felt the other changes worked well too. But that's just me. I appreciate the purists out there will want them as they remember them - but I still have 2 sets of the originals on video, as well as the special edition DVD (got 2 sets of those as well! lol) so it doesn't make much difference to me - but yeah, I think it's great news that now people finally get a choice over which versions they want to own.

No flak from me, SimonB. I preferred many of the bits from the original, but I know that everyone fell in love with slightly different visions of the myth.

I think that in five or seven years, there will be a verison released where fans can "build their own version" - pick and choose which remastered scenes and which original scenes we want, and then watch that.

The battle over the original death star? The landspeeder sequences? I'll take the remastered editions. But the final death star explosion? The empty streets of a Mos Eisley that looks more like the ass-end of nowhere? Han shooting first? Give me the originals, please.

- from another person who didn't buy any of the Star Wars releases...because she was holding out for this one

I'm definitrly getting these, but I do prefer the Special Editions in most ways.

Greedo shooting first is an obviouse gripe. Digital Jabba was pretty bad, though that was improved a lot for the DVD. I also prefer the original music number in Jedi.

Thankfully, the one Special Edition change that made my teect grind, Luke's scream as he fell down the air vent in Empire, was removed from the DVD's.

DATALESS

I hate the special editions of Ep 4 (A New Hope) and Ep 6 (Jedi). They were best the way they were. It's interesting to have Jabba the Hutt in Ep4 but not necessary and I hate the new space fight outside of the first Deathstar, call me a purist but I loved in 77. Why should it be changed? Ep 5 Empire there are no real changes, so no big deal. I am so glad that they are being released. Once that DVD set comes out I might have to burn the Special Edition set. Wait, this must be a joke. You have to be toying with us. You are just mean. I just went to www.starwars.com and it's true!!! It's going to be out for a limited time from Sept. 12 to Dec 31. Here's the site you can read about it. http://www.starwars.com/episode-iv/release/video/news20060503.html

I would have liked the "cleaned up" version where the special effects were a bit polished (no lines around the x-wings, etc) - but overall I enjoy the originals better than the "tweaked" versions. Jabba and Gredo are everyone's gripes, but for me I just thought that some of the special effects stuff was pointless and silly. Like the extra robots in the desert Mos Eisley - they were kind of silly and useless. The more sparse Mos Eisley, I thought, looked better too.

Anyway, whichever you like, you're all right, the choice is finally here. I never bought the tweaked versions, holding onto my original vhs tapes like Linus and his blanket. Now, maybe I can let those go.

Why would he? He already had enough cash to buy the devil's soul.

Aside: When I saw Mal fire at the Operative in the trailer, I laughed so hard I peed my kilt, and it was 'cause of what they did to the Greedo scene!

Hey Chrisisall, I don't know if you're aware but you can see those deleted scenes on the CD-ROM called 'Behind the Magic: The Insider's Guide to Star Wars'. They're in black & white but they're neat little scenes. I believe it may be out-of-print. I got it on the clearance rack at an EB Games for $5.

It sucks that the unaltered trilogy is coming out without getting the cleaning up and restoration of the 2004 version. And 2.0 sound?! WTF... I guess we'll have to wait for a HD DVD/Blu-ray edition that's cleaned up - if those formats even survive.
