Not sure if anyone else had thought about or posted about this but it had occured to me that the movie we know as Serenity perhaps should have been Serenity 2.

By this I mean that Serenity felt to me like a sequel to the series. In the series we were introduced to the characters, saw them grow and saw them tested. We had a budding love story, some scraps with the law and the setup for a big showdown as was seen in Serenity.

This might be why Serenity didn't do as well as we all hoped. If Joss and the gang had made a movie simply continuing what was done in the series, reintroducing the characters, developing the romance between Kaylee and Simon but without them actually getting together, foreshadow the events of the movie we know as Serenity with River being crazy and everything but not actually having her go all maiden's head yet then maybe the movie would have been better recieved.

I think Serenity can be best parralled to The Empire Strikes back with its dark mood, semi-tragic ending, and the way river and mal fly off into space at the end looking toward the future just as Luke and Leah do. What I'm getting at is, would Empire (one of the all-time top ten movies according to AFI) be as successful without A New Hope? Is that what Serenity is missing?

Or perhaps Firefly: The Motion Picture.

I think perhaps Serenity should have had an advertising campaign.

It may have been a situation similar to the one with the Star Wars movies. Joss made the script he new the studio would most likely accept and then he could always go "back" and film the buildup.

This occured to be too. Joss has said that in sequels we'll learn about Book's past and its known that the entire cast (Alan and Ron included) has signed to do more movies. Plus we have to find out why Simon was giving Mal shots randomly in the movie. I'd say there are some gaps to be filled between the series and the movie. We may be looking at prequels coming our way in the future.

That may be why this film feels like a sequel to me. Joss might be setting it up to be one. Knowing him there is something up his sleeve.

I think you're right, but I think it's a perfect sequel to the original Serenity, the pilot. Technically, speaking strictly from a story standpoint, you could watch the pilot and the movie and get the gist of the whole thing. I know that takes out a lot of the fun, but it works.

If this is true, then why are there so many new browncoats who saw the movie first?

Because some of us didn't know about the show (like me). I was in a completely different country.

Because the show here was broadcast out of sequence and prempted.

Because some people are stupid?

I absolutely agree.

The BDM is the perfect sequel to the show. It also stands alone. He wrote it in such away that a newcomer to the verse isn't lost.

I will tell you though, one of my recruits saw the movie, and then came in as I was watching the show. She kept saying "but he is dead". I had to keep going - no this is BEFORE the movie.
