RIVER6213

I was going through my 1 x 10^6 soundtracks and regular music and realized that most of it is movie and television soundtracks. What does this mean? Is life a soundtrack? Are the movies or TV shows that I watch, or have watched have become a sound track to my own life or yours?

Soundtracks to a person's life have a habit of saying a lot about that person. I guess I never really grew up. What the hell, life is an adventure no matter how you look at it and I guess we need good background music.

What are your sound tracks?

Here are some of mine:
Some of these tracks are off of my 5th History list….we are in 5th history right? Anyway…

1. Firefly main theme
2. Firefly The funeral
3. Battlestar Galactica – Title theme
4. Battlestar Galactica - Prologue
5. Battlestar Galactica- Old Series – The Red Nova
6. Starship Troopers- Punishment/Asteroid Grazing
7. Duel Faiths – Star wars episode 1
8. To kiss or not to kiss- BSG Mini series
9. Evacuation – Independence day
10. Firefly – River’s Dance
11. Space 1999 Main title
12. Spiderman – Farwell
13. The Enterprise – Star Trek The Motion Picture
14. Anakin vs. Obi wan
15. Leaving Dry-dock – Star Trek The motion Picture
16. Klendathu Drop- Starship Troopers
17. Apollo 13 - The Launch
18. 2001 a Space Odyssey
19. Old BSG - Exploration
20. All of the music from “The Hours”
21. Brothers – Pearl Harbor The Motion picture

22. A Good lighter - BSG 2nd Season

As I look at this small list of music that has meaning to me, I feel that once again I have failed as a woman. Once again I have demonstrated that I seem to like guy things. This is a reoccurring theme in my life, but it is the things that I like. What is wrong with me? Oh well…screw it, I like this stuff.

My personal soundtrack (from soundtracks, I guess) would look something like this:

Kid vs Herod - The Quick and the Dead
The King's Highway - Bubba Hotep
Going for a Ride - Serenity
Serenity (the End Credits version)
The Goldeneye Overture - Goldeneye
A Pleasant Drive in St. Petersburg - Goldeneye
Korben Dallas - The Fifth Element
The Taxi Chase - The Fifth Element
Spaceball - Firefly
Molossus - Batman Begins
Those We Don't Speak Of - The Village
Journey of the Sorceror - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (the film)
Earth Mark II - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Jurassic Park Main Theme
Raiders of the Lost Ark Main Theme
The Battle of Endor - Return of the Jedi
The Asteroid Field - The Empire Strikes Back
The Tale of Viktor Navorski - The Terminal
Cancion Del Mariachi - Desperado
B.P.R.D. - Hellboy
Ping Island / Lightning Strike Rescue Op - The Life Aquatic
100 Mile Dash - The Incredibles
Brazil - Brazil
Marv - Sin City
Agent Sands' Theme - Once Upon a Time in Mexico
Once Upon a Time in Mexio Title Theme

If you could say anything about that list, it would probably be that I grew up with some eclectic tastes in music. At times very traditional and dramatic, at times fun and intriguing.

That's a good list. There are some things on your list that I should have added to my list. I should have added some of the StarWars stuff and some of the Raiders of the lost ark stuff along with some of the Batman begins stuff, but oh well...u snooze u loose.

No! You haven't failed as a woman! We sci-fi chicks are the epitome of womanhood, dangnabbit! We, um, um, bridge an important gap for all those awkward geek guys we know and help them learn to cope with the female race thereby increasing our chances of spreading the glorious geekdom via breeding! YES! THAT'S IT!

Or that's what I tell myself Then I read another SF book. And I have been told by Geek Guys that there's nothing sexier than a woman who can quote Heinlein

My TV/Movie Soundtrack is very dated.

Can't Hardly Wait
Walk the Line (not that one so much)
Romeo and Juliet (Luhrman version)
And then a whole slew of anime - mostly the Slayer, Fushigi Yuugi, and Rurouni Kenshin themes.

I haven't updated in five years River, you pwn me in the SF music.

I love it! We shall conquor the world through superior genetics!!

Plus, you gotta introduce me to some of those Geek Guys! I'd blow their minds, baby!!

What is oddly worrying (for my parents at least if not for me) is that through vast amounts of Sci-Fi watching I've been drawn to the being drawn to the softly scrumtious side by all the gorgeous babes. Honestly, put me in a room with Mal, Simon, River and Kaylee and make me choose and I believe my head would explode with indescision!!

Sorry, kinda gone off topic here. Blame the hormones!!

"Pwn?" LoL!

Heinlein! I was brought up reading Robert A. Heinlein books. My Favorites were:

The Red Planet
Starship Troopers
Space Cadet
Starman Jones
Farmer of the Sky
Citizen of the Galaxy

I didn’t like Stranger in a Strange land. I don't know why people liked that one. There was also a book that Heinlein wrote about some old, rich guy who was dying, so with his wealth, he found a medical way to transfer his mind into a brain-dead, beautiful woman, but I can't think of the title right now.

The only TV soundtrack (besides Speed Racer) I know is the music from Star Blazers!

"We're offfff to outer space, we are leaving mother Earthhhhh, to save the human raceeeee!!!!!”

Songs like that helped me cope as a teenager a thousand years ago. Maybe I’m just brain-dead and am finding out about it now?

Sorry if I went off topic for a few seconds there. I am so hungover right now!!!! I need some coffee!!!!!!

I also forgot to add:

The music from the original Star Trek episodes:

1. Balance of Terror (Who could ever forget this?)

2. Ruth (I wish some guy would hear this music everytime he saw me) *Sigh* unconditional love is something only hollywood could have dreamt up.

3. The Doomsday Machine (How relentless)
4. City on the Edge of Forever

I need to get some coffee or I'm gonna die!

Which came 1st, River or the Coffee?

Stranger in a Strange Land also left me cold. I loved Starship Troopers, but my favorite would have to be The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.

Well, I'm looking through my CD collection, and realizing I haven't bought any new music (Firefly and Serenity Soundtracks notwithstanding) in like 5, 6 years :) I'll give this a try, though. Most of these were in one movie or another, I think.

Waiting for the Bus - Violent Femmes
Blister in the Sun - Violent Femmes
Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Serenity - Serenity Soundtrack
Going for a Ride - Serenity Soundtrack
Rebuilding Serenity - Serenity Soundtrack
Prep for Flight - Serenity Soundtrack
Sheherazade - Rimsky-Korsakov
Big Bar Fight - Firefly Soundtrack
The Israelites- Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs
The Highway Man - Johnny Cash
Okay, anything Johnny Cash :)
And if only I had Elvis Presley playing every time I entered the room...

...And I'll stop before I run on and on and on...

(And on a side-note: Give me a geeky chick any day of the week. If she don't know what Red Dwarf, Mystery Science Theatre 3000, or of course Firefly is: well, I'll have nothing to do with her. Don't care how pretty you are, at some point I assume we'll have to make conversation. :)

I love Red Dwarf, and Firefly, but I don't know what this Mystery Science Fiction Theater thing is. Yah! I get to be in the geeky chick category! I can’t say that too loud.

This board is the only place on this earth that I can act like myself and get away with it!!!!

With that, off to church I go! By the way, at this small church/home I go to every Saturday and Sunday, there are these women there that unspokenly decided to make it their personal responsibility to find me a husband! Strange behavior if you ask me, but I put up with it because they are so nice to me, but I find it to be some what annoying.

See ya!

Hmmm! I don't know. Perhaps some sort of Geek Exam is in order. Anyone who can recite the entire Holy Hand Grenade speech from Monty Python gets the prize!

I was always more partial to the prophets from The Life of Brian:

"There shall in that time be rumors of things going astray, um, and there shall be a great confusion as to where things really are, and nobody will really know where lieth those little things with the sort of raffia-work base that has an attachment. At that time, a friend shall lose his friend's hammer, and the young shall not know where lieth the things possessed by their fathers that their fathers put there only just the night before, about eight o'clock."

The road to Hel is paved with good intentions

Ooh! My favourite type of thread - one about soundtracks!

Half of my cd's are soundtracks – so this will be tough to name some without coming out with a list of hundreds… so I’ll just stick to my top twenty “most listened to” tracks of the minute (yes I do like the firefly soundtrack, but haven’t listened to it a lot recently, hence its exclusion from the list), along with my five current favourite soundtracks:

1. Michael Giacchino - Parting Words (Lost: Season 1)
2. Marco Beltrami - Father's Funeral (Hellboy)
3. Bear McCreary – A Good Lighter/Wander My Friends (Battlestar Galactica: Season 1) – I can count those two tracks as one because I combined them to make one track. I love Audacity.
4. John Williams – The Birth of the Twins/Padme’s Destiny (Revenge of the Sith)
5. Robert J Kral – Through the Looking Glass (Angel)
6. Bear McCreary – Boomer Flees (Battlestar Galactica: Season 1)
7. Bear McCreary – Two Funerals (Battlestar Galactica: Season 1)
8. Richard Gibbs – To Kiss or not to Kiss (Battlestar Galactica: Mini-series)
9. Michael Giacchino – Locke’d Out Again (Lost: Season 1)
10. Michael Giacchino – Life and Death (Lost: Season 1)
11. Sean Callery - Jack's Revenge at the Docks (24)
12. Graeme Revell - The Necklace (Daredevil)
13. Harry Gregson Williams - The End (Man on Fire)
14. John Ottman - Suite from X2 (X Men 2)
15. Danny Elfman – A Man Again (Hulk)
16. Mark Snow – Edge of the World (Millennium) – This is a title I made up, it’s taken from the season 1 promo cd, but none of the tracks had titles so I had to make up my own. This is from the episode “Lamentation”
17. Hans Zimmer – A Way of Life (The Last Samurai)
18. James Newton Howard - The Gravel Road (The Village)
19. Harald Kloser – Because of You (The Day After Tomorrow)
20. Ron Hay – Sarah’s Love Theme (The Dead Zone: Season 1)

Also, some suites I made up myself using Audacity, and listen to a lot:
Greg Edmonson – FIREFLY: Out of Gas Suite (Out of Gas/Dying Ship/Captain and Ship)
John Williams – Superman Suite 1 (Excerpts from The Planet Krypton/Main Title)
John Williams – Superman Suite 2 (Excerpts from Leaving Home/Fortress of Solitude) – just got the best bits of both tracks, the Fortress theme alone should go on for 9 minutes but I cut that down
Michael Giacchino – ALIAS: Syd and Vaughn’s Suite (Excerpts from Double Life/Almost Two Years/Aftermath)

Five Favourite Soundtracks at the minute
1. Michael Giacchino – Lost: Season 1
2. Bear McCreary – Battlestar Galactica: Season 1
3. Sean Callery – 24
4. James Newton Howard – The Village
5. John Williams – Revenge of the Sith

I would like to pick all-time favourite soundtracks, but it’s just too hard

I love the Romeo & Juliet soundtrack (though it's been a while since I've listened to it). I'm just annoyed it's covered in dialogue.
I don't mind a bit of dialogue and sound effects on a soundtrack, but I feel it's too much here. If only they released another soundtrack with the same score, except with just the score - no dialogue or gunshots or the screeching of car tyres... actually, maybe I just live in a rough neighbourhood

Well they say "great minds think alike", I guess we like the same things too
I could have gone on and on (I fear I did anyway) listing the music I like - there are hundreds of tracks I love, which is why I'm planning on making some cd compliations of the best Soundtrack cues - all my favourite music on one (or ten) discs.

I also love the Pearl Harbour soundtrack. But I kinda liked the movie too.

I got the Kingdom of Heaven soundtrack (which is also very good) brand new for £2 or £3- can you believe it. I think it was a clearout. I got The Village and Empire of the Sun soundtracks too the other week for £4 each. Bargain!

Haven't really listened to Empire of the Sun yet though - bought it because I love the track "Cadillac of the Skies" which was on the John Williams Anthology compilation. I've not even seen the movie

Is it bad that the soundtrack to my life seems to be provided by Wierd Al?

Kidding aside, I have a huge soundtrack collection that I'll list when I'm not in as much of a hurry as I am now. Not nearly enough J-pop though (I'm an animé lover in small-town Canada. It's like a cultural wasteland ).

And that's not even counting all the fanvids I've accumulated (they count as soundtracks to me).

I'm glad I'm not the only woman that loves movie/TV show soundtracks! On my short list: Coyote Ugly, Top Gun, Practical Magic, 13 Going on 30.

13 going on 30 was a cute movie. The soundtrack's pretty good also! I also have the soundtrack to Uptowngirls....did you see that one? Its a really dear movie. It has that Dakota Fanning kid in it. I have yet to see a bad film with Dakota fanning. If I ever had any daughters I would want them to be like her. It also has brittney Murphy in it.

I never met anyone in my personal life who admits to liking movie/tv soundtracks...I guess its one of those things people keep secret.

GUENEVER

I've never been a big Brittney Murphy fan; but, Dakota Fanning is a cute kid. The wedding singer also has a great soundtrack.

I always love soundtracks because you get the artist's 'good' songs and don't get stuck with all of the filler.

Oh, gorammit. I was flipping through channels the other day, and I can't believe I missed one important addition to my list.

The Breakfast Club Soundtrack!

Regarding geek selective breeding programs -

I married a geek without even quite realizing it. His geekiness has come to light more and more throughout our marriage. As I found out he was an original Trekker, that he had all the original BSG eps by heart, that he sneaked out of bed in the middle of the night to watch Red Dwarf... I realized just how truly blessed I am.

We have since given birth to one seriously geeky geek son, one closet geek daughter and one little one who is too young to show her geekiness yet, though she quotes "Fiyafwy" all the time.

C'mon Universal, and greenlight the sequel!

I'm so proud of you. The world would be so much better with more geeks. Sadly - I'm still looking for mine.

I love your younger daughter already!!! "Fiyafwy"! Aw!!!!!

That is the cutest thing ever!
(The "Fiyafwy" bit, not the "husband sneaking downstairs to watch red dwarf" bit. Though it is a great show!)

Getting back to soundtracks, my list was mainly score, so here's a list of my favourite soundtracks (with actual songs)

Garden State
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Album
The Wedding Singer
Spider-man
Roswell
Smallville
Daredevil
Cruel Intentions
Donnie Darko (great soundtrack and score)
Due South
Forrest Gump
Freaks and Geeks
Shrek 2
The Dead Zone, Season 1 and the Dead Zone OST (two different releases)
Songs in the Key of X (X Files)

and if we're going to mention musical soundtracks:

Phantom of the Opera!!!
West Side Story
Singin in the Rain
and how can I miss out Buffy: Once more with feeling?!!
