Including Ron Moore, this should do well. But in that list of new shows, not a word of Firefly. *sigh*

Good news for BG fans, bad news for those wanting Sci-Fi to take over Firefly.

It just popped into my tiny brain that Firefly may be on the horizon for next year. Could be that the PTB liked the ratings (I hope anyway) for the reruns and that planted a seed for the near future.

No kidding.
Not to bash spin-offs, but this could be very bad for the duration of BSG. Overkill maybe? I mean, sounds interesting, but it could also be a kiss of death..
I'd be shiny for a rebirth of Firefly or a post-Serenity series with our BDH's instead, for sure.

It's so frusrating to see BSG succeed when Firefly didn't. Especially when Moore's 'mission statement' about how he would revolutionize sci-fi was a blatant ripoff of FF. The result, while pretty good, was nowhere near as artful and inspired as Whedon's work, yet BSG is what finds success.

What is it about mediocrity that so thrills TV audiences? Or is it the networks who prefer the 'same-old same-old'?

Well Sarge, I can't agree that BSG is mediocre. One of cable's highest rated shows, I also think it's Sci-Fi's highest rated regular series. I personally like BSG just as much as Firefly, but they're two different kinds of sci-fi. I just don't know how to categorize them. Sci-fi humor? Sci-fi drama? Sci-fi action-drama with humor? (that last one definitely FF) The networks do prefer the 'same-old', but Sci-Fi and other channels like Spike and FX keep pushing boundaries beyond mediocre. If only Joss had started FireFly on FX ------ oohh the mind boggles ------

It's lame that their doing this after only two seasons & with the show still on the air. Don't get me wrong I love BSG, but It's too much too soon. At least wait until this series is finished.

I'm not terribly surprised by this. Scifi needs money which means ratings, and BSG is becoming their one big hit. Especially since SG-1 is getting long in the tooth, and Atlantis seems to be dropping in quality and ratings. It was sudden, but inevitable that they would pressure BSG's executive producers to do a spin-off. They did the same thing with SG-1 when it came over to them and did well.

Worst thing is that Atlantis proves that the brain drain and effort you have to put into doing two shows at once has a severe quality impact.

I reserve judgment. Sounds different enough that it could be really good, and there's an absolute dearth of non-space-travel sci-fi on TV.

We'll see.

I don't resent BSG's success, because I really like it. The Sci-fi Channel knows how to market sci-fi (go figure) where F*X doesn't, and BSG is easier to categorize and correlate with what audiences and network execs already know.

It's a damn fine show, though.

STORYMARK

I think this might be a way for SciFi to hedge their bets in case BSG gets moved over the NBC, as has been rumored lately.

That way, even if BSG is shown on another network, the franchise still has a presence on SciFi.
