Hi guys,

First I'd like to say that I am totally against illegal downloads, but anyways a friend of mine found big proof that serenity is one of the most wanted movies out there.

http://www.mininova.org/sub/1/leech

Notice that serenity is the second most wanted movie as you can see on this torrent movie download site. The number of "leechers" which are the number of people who are downloading the file is the second biggest in the list thus proving that serenity is more wanted than many other blockbusters like Peter Jackson's King Kong, Aeon flux and the brothers Grimm.

It sure would be better if all of these people downloading serenity would spend some extra bucks buying the dvd, but this still proves serenity is one of the most prefered flicks out there..

Peace browncoats!

Too bad we can't round up a posse of Browncoats and educate the "leechers" on the error of their ways!

I'm not sure whether to kill these people or force them to buy a DVD at gunpoint thus leaving them alive to spread the word and go to theaters in the event of a Sequel.

Can't we do both. Make them buy the DVD, make them make teir friends buy the DVD and then shoot them. 'Course we won't TELL them we are gonna shoot them...........that not being a good idea.

Well then it might be hard to get their friends to tell their friends.

Also if word gets around the ones we get to later will know what's coming ... unless we could get them all at once.

Well, before we bash DLing illegal stuff too much - I did convert a friend who was willing to watch ripped stuff. He thought it was so amazing he went out and bought the DVDs. And the way I got into BSG was by watching DLed episodes, but I now own the Series on DVD.

Maybe they'll be moved to go out and purchse it too.

That's what I hope happens, the problem is that some people download things that they would have bought. It's a simple equation really, if more people buy it because they downloaded it than download it instead of buying it this is good for us, if it is the other way around it's bad. I doubt anyone has the figures though.

Well if you downloaded the ones that were taped off of TV I think, although I am in no way certain, that that was in fact legal due to a kink in the law.

I got into it when it was on TV but didn't tape it, so I downloaded it as well (I didn't even know whether DVDs were coming.) It was shortly after that that I was informed by a usually reliable and knowledgeable person that what I did was not in fact illegal.

I also viewed the unaired episodes that way, which I'm pretty sure was illegal no matter what.

I bought the DVDs when they came out anyway.

I hope so. The thing that bugs me is that I know people will download it, love it, and then not buy it. I don't know what percent, but it still bugs me.

Freeloaders.

I hate thieves (our BDMs excluded, of course).

I can see downloading it when it wasn't available on DVD yet and was already out of the theaters. But now, it's out. There's no reason to steal it.

Grrrrrr.

SUICIDALDUCKLING

i tend to believe illegal downloads tend to help less popular movies, like Serenity, more than hurt it. The more people that know about Serenity the better. The people downloading it probably wouldn't have bought it or even bothered watching the movie anyway and if they buy the DVD or tell someone else about the movie, then that's a win for us. We have an uphill battle on getting a sequel and we need all the help we can get. Now we just have to hope we can get a sequel before all the illegal downloaders are sued to the poor house or rotting in jail.

I think the best way to deal with this is posting a simple polite message under the torrents when you find them. maybe something like this. "If you want more episodes or films visit us at www.fireflyfans.net Of course if they visit here they will see how important it is to at least buy the film.

"Yeah but she's our witch so cut her the hell down"

DONCOAT

It is a conundrum, isn't it? We want as many people as possible to see our BDM, love it, and join the Browncoat army. Yet by downloading instead of buying, they're shorting out the one and only signal we have that means anything to the decision makers: the sales figures.

I'd like to think that Browncoats generally understand this and, if anything, go out of their way to purchase legally. Yet I have distributed copies of DVD #1 from the series as a means of getting friends and family members interested. (This has led to quite a few sales of the DVD set, by the way.)

Yet another paradox is that, hey, we're Browncoats, and that means it tickles us a bit to stick it to the purplebellies. And we all know the Big Entertainment Companies are all part of Blue Sun, right?

So I guess I'm of two minds on this one. More potential Browncoats: Yay! Less revenue counted toward Serenity's bottom line: Boo!

I don't disagree on any particular point.

Due to leeching I discovered Firefly and Serenity and since then I've bought every piece of Serenity/Firefly related merchendise I can afford.

I think it is a safe bet to say that anyone that is going to "get" the verse and become a Browncoat will not be satisfied with only the bootleg. They will get the fever just like the rest of us and buy anything and everything they can get their hands on. The people that bootleg and don't "get it". Well, they are sad, sad individuals and their kharma will get them.

I'm not familiar with the torrent and downloading experience/culture, only what I hear - I don't get how these sites can exist - are they only temporary? Until MPAA etc., finds their host and shuts them down via the DMCA?

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Well, there is not much we can do to stop these downloaders, at least nothing I know of right off hand. All we can do is hope they, like others have mentioned, like the BDM so much they go out & buy the DVD. That & tell LOTS of friends!
