Hi I'm doing a project for Uni about the fans of Firefly and wanted to know just how the fans can influence what goes on in a show...so tell me anyone know what fans can achieve/influence?

I'm not sure how much influence fans can have on "what goes on in a show" that's not on the air. All we can do at this moment is speak with our pocket books. Once the Show is back on (Ihope and pray) I'd follow the blogs.

Personally I've purchased the DVD's of Firefly and Serenity and the Visual companion. I plan on getting the Firefly Companion when they are published and Music soon. I also vote on any poll and sign any petition.

Most important I plan on particpating in the June 23rd "Mission"

I realize that this isn't Firefly but when Farscape was on two characters (Chiana and Scorpius) were not intended to be long term characters (Chiana was only supposed to be on for 1 or 2 eps, Scorpius for 4) but the fan response to them was so great (on the bulletin board by the end of Chiana's first ep they already were forming a fan group) that the writers ended up including them in the show from then on.

So the writers of Farscape at least paid attention to the fans, I don't know about any other shows doing the same though.

As for other influences, the Firefly fans raised a fuss until Serenity was made (I was not a fan at the time so I can't claim credit) and still are making a fuss :). And the Farscape fans made a fuss and got the Peacekeeper Wars mini-series made.

Thats all that I know about fans influencing shows.

Well, one of the lesser shows I watch (teehee) is LOST, and I get the impression that they pay attention to theories on the boards and use that info to mess with the fans' heads. "It's all just a dream of one of the Losties!" is the most obvious one. I love that. The internet really gives the creators a chance to get almost instant feedback, and they can adjust to the fans' ideas and wishes.
It's just too bad too few people are doing it.

Also, I wouldn't believe in the success of Serenity Day if I wouldn't believe in the power of Fandom.
And I believe. You guys made me. Without you, there would have been no BDM. You been good, so we all got wife soup.
"Hey, free soup!".

Fans can have a lot of power, as long as they are willing to stick it for the long run. Usually many fangroups seem to fade over time, but if a group just keeps getting stronger (like us) they cant be ignored for long. Lets face it, without the Fans Firefly wouldnt have been as long as it is (even though its shortened) and there wouldnt have been a Serenity.

You can’t stop the Signal.
Keep spreading the word about Firefly!

More of a charming urban myth that anything else. Universal wanted to work with Joss and thought Serenity would make a good franchise. The fanbase really didn't play a part in the decision to greenlight the movie.

You do know that Family Guy was cancelled and the fans brought it back. They did it through the DVD sales and some other things. It took a while partly because Fox (who orignally cancelled it) and Cartoon Network (who ran it on Adult Swim getting it more fans) had a bidding war on it. Fox won out because they realized they totally screwed up.

So there is hope for us as well.
