Just one of those random thoughts that's been kicking around in my brainpan for a couple days now for some reason, and figured I'd post this here. Think it might be interesting to see what people come up with.

Here's the question: Let's say if (WHEN!) they bring Firefly back, you were given the opportunity to write yourself into one (or many) of the new episodes as either a walk-on part, recurring character, cameo, etc... A brand-new character, that is. Not one of the existing ones. (Though, what the frell, it's not like I could stop you if you really wanted to be Mal, either. Though in that case, you'd have to find a new job for Nathan Fillion :)

So, what sort of character would you be? A captain of another ship? A space pirate, reaver, alliance symphathizer, another wandering Shephard with a troubled past? Would you come into contact with the crew of Serenity and how? I don't really have anything terribly specific in mind, just thought it might be an interesting idea, and the more I thought if this the more I realized I really have no idea how I'd fit in there.

Silly, maybe. But... I'm in a mood

I would be a reaccuring character with (drum roll please) a troubled past. The character would somehow be connected with River, and she would be able to hold her own. I would have to say she is a lone wolf much like Mal, but deep down inside she longs for the company of fellow human beings. I say the Serenity ship would be perfect for her. I would go into much more character detail but it's almost 7:00 A.M. where I live and my brain is fried. See...I'm even writing run on sentences. :D

I've thought about writing this character in a fan fic, I just never get around to it.

Hear, Hear, Bun!!!

Nuclearday... you be treading on dangerous ground around here mentioning even the possibility of not having Nathan be Mal. Who else could possibly have the lashes! No one I say!!!

Bun, I'm right there with you.

I can envision a story in the verse that requires that the Captain will need some R and R and I can be on the planet they go to for that, thank you very much.

Bun, come join us at the Appreciatin' Nathan thread sometime.. we'd love to have your insight into Nathan's lashyness.

I would be a Firefly 'Verse version of Bruce Campbell's character "King of Thieves" from Hercules and Xena- stealing from Mal and Badger, and giving to, well, myself.

I'd like to be a reccurring character, maybe an Academy "Grad", somehow having escaped after the Operative killed Dr. Matthias. Then He found his way to Serenity, and is now working towards Crewmanship whilst going upon many a misadventure dodging what's left of the alliance, the Reavers, and the too many people we have to avoid on Persephone.

If anyone gets nosy...Shoot em.

FM, I knew somehow that word of this would get out and we'd cluster 'round to protect His Lashyness.

I've been to the OB v.2 and posted in the Happy Birthday thread. It shot me a Warning under my name on the post. So too embarrassing. Blush. No idea what I did. Nothing but "Happy Birthday" in little Comic Sans MS letters and a couple of happy-faces, reduced from several after it told me I'd overdone the 'moties.

Mighty busy here, welcoming new 'coats to our part of the 'Verse. Mighty slow computer to do it on. Heh.

I'd like to have my version of Mr. Universe's CommPlex, with an array of fast machines, each signed onto one of my favorite spots on the Cortex, and a wheeled chair upon which to scoot along from keyboard to keyboard.

Can't Stop the Signal -- sure can retard it a little.

Mal has had those lashes since he was a boy on Shadow. I remember his Ma sayin' he was as lashy as a cow.

If I were written into an episode, I would appear in a bar where mal and the crew were about to work a deal. It would go bad, of course, and I would have to save mal from being shot in the back, or something. Then of course we would all run back to Serenity where Wash(he's still alive in this fantasy) would make witty one liners to which I would make witty replies. The captain is of course drawn to me in a way he cannot define...I see a re-occuring character. Maybe I was once an alliance assassin now working against them. Not like I've thought about it or anything....

LMAO! :) Mayhap I shoulda picked a different example, seeing as the Mal Watchers are about ;p No worries on my part, I'd make a rather poor excuse for a captain I'm sure. (I can see Jayne explaining to me at great lengths the finer points of his chain of command.)

Anyways, some good and interesting responses as I was sure there would be. I suppose as I started the thread, I oughta throw in my two cents as well.

I think I'd rather enjoy running a trading post of some sort. Lots of odds and ends, antiques, spare parts, what have you. I'd have to be in one of those shiny space stations like in The Message, I suppose ('cause, you know... it's in Space :) Likely to meet all manner of interesting people that way. Everthing has a story to it, and I'd bet there's no shortage of that out in the Rim.

Maybe Serenity docks one day at the station where my shop is. On the run from the law and such, getting back from a cunningly-planned heist gone terribly wrong and looking to unload some highly illegal and very sought-after contraband. Perhaps Simon acts the boob once again, sending Kaylee off in a huff. I could be rebound boy (in Space! :) Kaylee and I have a brief but tumultous affair, even though she spends most of her time doling on about some high-bred doctor... Of course Simon shows up and apologizes after River once again shows him the way.

I would be dumped like yesterday's garbage of course. Heart-broken, but only for a moment, as here come the Feds in search of thier stolen property. Serenity makes a daring white-knuckle escape (Wash executes some brilliant flying assisted by Kaylee in the engine room with some rare part I lent her but never had the heart to ask payment for.) Meanwhile, I'm left to answer as to how exactly I recently seem to have come into possession of the Admiral's priceless heirloom ;p

But, you know... it's not like I've thought about this at any great length... ;p

I think I'd like to be one of Mal and Zoeys old war buddies.

We were brothers in arms in the battle of Serenity Valley but now I'd be just another outer rim pirate looking for coin to buy my (and my crews) next meal.

I'd like it to be a character that could come back on occasion. Swap war stories with Mal and Zoe,show ours scars and swap Alliance info. Maybe even pull a job or two together. Could be kinda fun.

MALICE

Well I have a couple different types I could see myself playing. One would be Mal's older brother. I seem him as an ex-Browncoat pilot that changed sides from the Alliance once the war started and after a brutal tragedy like wife dies etc. Mal looked up to him growing up as many younger siblings do. Problem is in reality many times siblings are jaded by youth and his brother isn't the heroic pilot that he once thought his brother was. Instead we have a bitter man struggling to find his place in the 'verse without the one thing that meant the most to him, his wife. He smuggles, cheats, steals, lies but inside there is still a remnant of what he was before the war which Mal calls him out on. I could see the sibling rivalry spilling onboard ship when Mal gets his older brother to fill in on being the ship pilot for an episode or two but has a hard time dealing with a wash-up has been. Could be some fun ribbing that eventually comes to a brawl in the galley ending with a complete crew food fight. Eventually with the crews help and Mal's he realizes what's truly important to him and gets out of his funk. He ends up getting his own ship out of a derelict transport freighter that had mech. problems where all crew died onboard.

The other character I could see would be an escaped prodigy much like River is but doesn't remember anything about who he is or was. He would feel an uncontrollable need to seek out this woman, River, who haunts his dreams and try to find some answers as to who or what he is.

i would be a recurring character. not with a troubled past, but with a very hazy present. i'd be river and simon's childhood friend, as in, their only friend. the name would be Harry Michaels. and would first find the crew of srenity on a salvage mission. it would turn out later that he spent those 8 months searchinf for his old friends. only river is pleased to see him though, simon harbors a long resentment for harry...

i would write the fic, but my ideas can never be really pinned down. actually... i may try...

Well this is a fun thread! I think I would like to show up on the show as a companion, from House Madrassa, maybe? Shed some light on Inara's mystery? Any kind of part where I get to dress up is just fine with me! Of course, I think it would be interesting to see other parts of Simon and River's family, maybe a cousin? I know the show takes place on the Rim, but the Alliance is moving out every day. Seeing more of the Core and it's influence on the Rim would be interesting.

DESKTOPHIPPIE

Well, for a while now I've been thinking of a fanfic idea with a sort of neopagan version of a Shepherd. Not called a Shepherd, of course. The name I've given them is Walker.

This is the idea I have so far. Like I said, they're basically like Shepherds, only Pagan, or Wiccan, or something like that. Anyway, a Walker can only be trained by another Walker, and as the name implies they travel from place to place. A lot of the border planets are afraid of them, and have even been known to kill them, but the Walkers are obliged to go wherever they are needed, even if their presence won't be welcomed.

Walkers aren't welcomed on the Core planets either. Officially, the Alliance dissaproves of them, because Walkers are an independent, free spirited bunch who are willing to break laws they consider morally wrong. They also travel under assumed names - once a Walker is trained, he or she takes a new first name, and their second name becomes Walker.

Unoffically, the Alliance are terrified of the vast store of knowledge that the Walkers have about Earth-That-Was, knowledge that includes the true story of the flight from Earth. Which I won't say here, since I plan to write that fic. Some day!

Walkers are collectors of knowledge and wisdom. They see it as their sacred duty to preseve as much of the history, culture and science of Earth-That-Was as they possibly can. They also seek knowledge from other worlds, roaming both the core planets and the border moons for snippits of knowledge others consider a waste of time - a fairly tale, a collection of folk music, superstitions, a local herb that cures an upset stomach...

To minimise the danger to themselves and their hard-won store of knowledge, the Walkers live a solitary life. They travel in ones and twos, and meet each other very rarely. And I'm just realising as I type that I've gone waaay off the point here. Okay, short answer. I'd be a Walker! That way I could always bump into the crew during all kinds of messy situations. A recurring role! Yay!

I'd be a loner with his own ship, the Peregrine. It would be highly customized with all the latest technologies, fastest ship in the 'verse. I'd run into the crew of Serenity when we're both working on the same job, a heist of a very high-tech Alliance facilty, because of my proficiency in technology. During my collaboration with Kaylee we would get caught up in the moment and make passionate love to eachother. After the heist I would depart from Serenity, promising Kaylee that she would see me again, someday.

SERYN

I'd be someone who grew up on an alliance planet, therefore not so tough in the shooting people style, but with my own qualities.
If I ever got on board Kaylee and Wash (yup, he's alive in this one too) would be the only ones who actually liked me. I'd be the ships Voice of Reason.

I'd be there to spur Mal onto going and actually talking to Inara. Hell i'd be stood in the background of a stalled conversation yelling 'Hell just kiss her and be done with it!'

I'd help out in engineering and the infirmary and cook and do other useful stuff around the ship, but mostly I'd be there to stop all this stoic non-comunicating that goes on in fiction. I'd be able to talk books and music with Simon, keep River company so Kaylee would get some time alone with Simon, and I'd also be a spare person to sit with Wash in the bridge while everyone else was off doing other stuff. Maybe i'd knit. For fun i'd stare at Jayne while he was working out (both to unnerve him for my own amusement and well, for obvious reasons)

As you wouldn't need me all the time I'd disappear off for the odd visit, and come back when i'd found some fun and interesting crime for the crew to do. (Or when Mal and Inare needed their heads knocking together again)

I would be a guest star. Perhaps a passenger that signed on for a short trip out to the rim after being laid off from my job at a Blue Sun assembly plant. Unbeknowst to me I'm being chased by anonymous corporate goons (perhaps Blue Hand second stringers) because on my last day of work I left with the wrong tool box; a box containing something Blue Sun wants back very badly. And at some point in the show I'd get into an argument with Mal because even though I was against the war I can't understand why the Independents were opposed to unification.

This one came to me as I was reading all of these interesting threads.

I would like to be an ex-independant high ranking intelligence officer (what a mouthful) who now runs the underground that broke River out. Kind of a tired, hasseled, tactician persona. Always two steps ahead of the alliance and throwing barbs at them as I go. I am hasseled because my plans often require special equipment, men or lots of money that I don't have (enter Dr. Tam). I would be a recurring character, but only rarely to help reveal major plot points about the alliance, or river, or Book. Oh, yeah, and Mal HATES me, almost as much as the alliance, as it was my decision to abandon the troops in Serenity Valley. I had my reasons though...

LADYSERENITY

I would be a re-occuring character or a new one altogether. My character's name would be Liara Hawke. My pa was a Browncoat who fought with Mal or knew him a little anyway. My brother went to flight school where our own dear wash went, a couple years after Wash had been there, and his stories of Wash's flying made me join up too. But I would get a job on Serenity as the cook. See I'm running from these men who are slavers and have had me as a slave for two years. All kinds of bad happened in that span of time. My father and my older brother Jensen both died in the War so I had been on my own since. Mal takes me on because he remembers my father, though I don't know this right away. So while I'm out on the rim with the crew I earn my keep as galley cook while trying to keep my secret that I was a slave and that they are looking for me, dodging Reavers, bein bad guys and just aimin' to misbehave. My character would also have a secret crush on Mal and be annoyed to no end by Jayne. (Which could turn into something interesting later on.) This character comes from my fanfic that I am working on.

I don't think anyone else has had this yet, but I would be one of those "bridge bunnies" on the big Alliance cruisers, one with a warm heart and a kind streak. I'm almost thinking along the lines of the female Alliance member in Train Job, the one who suggests sending the Fed platoon in to help the locals track the medicine.

The plot could involve Mal and co. getting into trouble with the Feds and being taken aboard ala Bushwacked. During the course of the episode, I get to talk to Mal and other members of the crew and are convinced of the rightness of... of... whatever they're doing (smuggling medicine, perhaps). Mal and co. escape under their own power and get back to Serenity only to find it attached firmly to the cruiser hull... then suddenly they are released and are able to escape. The next scene would be me being chewed out by my superior for "accidentally" releasing the drive hoosiwatsnow and letting the prisoners escape.

I often think it would be nice if Mal could meet some "nice" Feds. I think the script for Dead or Alive had that potential.

Maybe a little inspiration.

The word peregrine means roving or wandering, which would fit my character rather well. Plus the peregrine falcon is the fastest bird on Earth-that-was, so what better name for my ship. I got to thinking that my character would be involved in some kind of racing league, which is where I get a lot of the money to buy all my fancy gadgets and ship modifications.

I'd be a rancher on a rugged world that looks strangely like the Southern California desert of earth-that-was. I'd have a big extended family living around me and we'd make all of the ranch hands family too. I'd be the matriarch of the clan and I'd get into trouble with lawless thugs and the BDHs would come help us help ourselves. We'd end with a celebration with dancing and drinking - but NO WEDDINGS. And the BDH would promise to make our ranch their base any time they returned to our planet in future.

Oh, and one of my sons would develop a giant crush on Inara and would moon around for weeks until someone explained to him what Companions are and do.

We don't get many Peregrins in Ireland *sigh*. Plenty of Magpies though. Which when you think about it is a good name for a ship run by a crew of dubious repute, since they're known for robbing shiny things

A fic magnet thread - hee hee! Subjects like this always are. They can be great for thrashing out ideas though. I love some of the ideas people have come up with here. We should have a regular fic discussion thread. For one thing, it might spur me into some actual writing instead of just dreaming up random ideas and never doing anything about them. And I'm sure it would be useful to at least a few people who aren't me.

On the subject of this thread - are there any other would-be companions out there? Is LittleAlbatross the only one, or did I miss one? I thought loads of people would want that kind of role, since you get to wear the best costumes

Damn it, Ravenhair, you stole my line!
Seriously, I'd be first in line to be one of Jayne's whores any old time.

We could work on different moons, I'm sure there's enough space in the 'verse for both of us. And there sure is enough Jayne to go around. I"ll share if you will!

ISAACSHEPHERD

After playing the Serenity RPG I have an idea of who I'd write myself in as in the series. My character is a bit like Mal and Shepherd. I have strict morales (I don't bully people or shoot someone who doens't have a weapon in hand) and I have a very strong prejudice against the Alliance.

Most likely I'd be one of Mal's war buddies with a ship and crew of my own now. Mal and I would see eye to eye on a lot of things but couldn't stay together for too long since we both want our own freedom of being captain.

Most likely I'd be calling Mal in on a favor for saving his life in the war or something along those lines and my life and/or the life of my crew are at stake, and most likely the Alliance is behind it.

The only time I'd probably show up again in the series is if Mal needed my help, particularly with Alliance problems (in which I'd help for free), seeing as I have a very strong hatred for them, possibly stronger than Mals...ok maybe about the same.

I'd kind of like to be a passenger, come on board Serenity cuz the major airlines (?) were either not available at that particular small town/moon, or maybe because they were too well policed - which might be interesting or scary, depending on if I'm feeling adventurous or not.
Not sure what I'd do once I got there except hang out and enjoy the vacation, just enjoy being there.

Probably something would go wrong at some point and there'd be a little delay in our travel plans while Captain & Co. got themselves out of another mess - but intact and with no new scars, I must insist on no new scars. When we arrived at my destination, I'd magically come up with more money to stay on board. At least until I got meself shot for playing in the cargo bay. (I *loves* that cargo bay!)

Oh yeah, and I'm also magically 30 years younger, and pretty, which hopefully the Captain would notice at some point.

*sigh* back to real life.

Wow, this is turning into a pretty good fic magnet, huh? ;p Hadn't thought of that potential. Maybe I'll have to get off my gorramn rear end and start working on some fanfic like I keep telling myself I'm gonna :)

Good repsonses here, and wow... lotta variety, too... Joss ever runs out of ideas WHEN we get some more 'verse all he needs to do is look to the 'coats for some inspiration

(Also, good to see no-one's come along to kick Nathan off the ship lol :)

Better not!
"You can take my Captain when you pry him from my..." EEK! *gross!* Nevermind. Anyways I think you know what I mean. Joss is Boss, Nathan is Mal. Gotta preserve the natural order of the Universe here.

Oh, just thought I'd throw another idea or two up here for the frell of it ;) Still have no idea how I'd fit into the 'verse other than as Reaver victim #4, or the guy who had a crush on Kaylee before she left her homeworld on Serenity. (Or possibly, with my luck, the chump who unknowingly put together the Academy pamphlet that convinced River to sign up :)

Here's one though, but I must warn it's entirely silly and against the grain of the show: The constant passenger, or: "Who's that guy on the couch?"

My first appearance is during a heated argument among the crew during one of the galley scenes. I walk by in a bathrobe and some fluffy slippers, pour myself a cup of (space)coffee and go to read the newspaper on that comfy couch across from the infirmary. This causes everyone to look at each other and wonder when exactly it was that they decided to take on passengers again. The crew each assume someone else brought me on board, but don't have the heart to bring it out into the open as I always have plenty of cash to pay my fare. (It's my story, I can have money if I want gorramn it! :)

I seem to have no destination, and go for episodes at a time without being seen. Either I'm abnormally calm under pressure or just completely under the impression that Serenity is a first-class cruise-liner as none of the scrapes and near-disasters Serenity flies through seem to phase me a bit. (Though sometimes I spill my coffee.)

Sometimes, however I am a boon to the crew as the voice of reason and stater of the obvious. Or maybe a bit like a male version of Guinan (without the crazy hat) from Star Trek TNG as someone you can talk your problems through over a nice cup of joe. "Oh, you need a whozzawhatzit for the humdingy or Serenity's dead in the water with a fleet of Reavers closing in? Yeah, I borrowed that for a filter for the coffee-maker. Here you go."

... so, yeah. Reaver victim #4 is I :)

INDIGOSTARBLASTER

I would be an apprentice Companion, job-shadowing Inara as part of my training. But in the course of the episode, we would discover I'm not quite what I seem to be...

No more spoilers, though -- I may yet write this one up :)

The first character I thought of while reading this description was Kramer from "Seinfeld", LOL.

Nuclearlady, that was hilarious! Great thread. And here I was thinking of getting some sleep.

Ahem, not that I've put a lot of thought into this, but I would be a reoccurring passenger. Since the crew knows me from before River and Simon, they trust me and will still give me a lift between outer rim planets, especially since they need the money. I would be a geologist independently contracted by outer rim planets to find mineral resources. Selling raw materials to the Alliance would help impove conditions on the border planets, but I would be competing again the Alliance, which tends to strip planets and leave the inhabitants even worse off. I started out taking any transport available, but eventually found Serenity. They help me haul all my equipment between planets, and I try to throw some legit work their way.

I would have to be Zoe-tough and Simon-smart to run my own operation on backworld planets. The crew would respect that, and the fact that I was trying to help the borderworlds. I would have grown up on a rim planet and been educated in the core, which allows me to relate to most of the crew. In payment for my education I had to serve the Alliance in the war and I did things Mal must never find out. I would definitely spend some "quality time" with Jayne.

Cool idea. Kinda surreal. Maybe you appear on the show after Joss "takes it to darker places."

Even more fun(?): Get yourself taken aboard every time they land at Persephone, but the getting-off is never shown. From the crew's reactions you'd conclude that they're either surprised to see you or taking it in stride -- depends on the desired effect on the fans.

Lots you could do with this concept....

(Can't you just hear Wash in Trash saying about YoSaffBridge, "What's she doing on this ship?")

That one made me think of the prospector and his wife that Mal mentions in Out of Gas. (From the Inara flashback.) So a little bit of added credibility there. Such a creative bunch of 'coats. Once again, Joss ever finds himself in a bind, I'm sure I know where to find some guest actors.

Oh, and it's nu_clear_day btw. (Though looking at it, I can see it's an odd handle that's easily misread. I ever get myself a wife, that'll be her screen-name lol :)

@FloralBunny: lol good idea. I walk on the ship like I belong there, and Wash does one of those silent questioning things like in the opening of Trash as Mal walks on with the tissue up his nose ;p River's the only one who knows the score, of course, but she's unfortunately too cryptic to make any sense.

Also, figured out how I save the day in an episode. The whole crew is once again captured and locked in their bunks. Bad guys think they've won the day and things look bleak... I of course am overlooked :) Manage to avoid the guards, reach the crew compartments and let everyone out. "Bit of trouble, eh? Hmm... yes, I wondered why I never got my wake-up call. Now do you suppose I could get a couple clean towels? And what's the status on the continental breakfast?" :)

KAYNA

I love my captain

Great chracter Nuclearday.

I'd be a shadowy type. No real explination of what I actually do I just show up now and then. Sometimes I'm with a 'crew', sometimes I'm alone. There are shady dealings and mysterious people involved. I'm pretty good with a gun but my weapon of choice is anything sharp (knives and swords and whatnot). I know more about the history and literature of Earth that was than Simon and Book combined. I go by a different name every time I show up and I'm quite good at breaking in (and out) of places. I grew up in a high class family on a core world but I joined up with the Independants during the war and I have diffinatly spent some time on the Rim. Badger is afraid of me.

Heh.

I love nukie's extension of the Mystery Passenger concept.

ARIZONAVALENTINE

My character would be J. Passepartout, (twenty g's to whoever can tell me what that name is from) and run my own ship, called either the Passepartout (which means "passes everywhere" in French) and a man who once fought for the Alliance, but left after "seeing both sides of the war." Unfortunately, Mal doesn't feel the same way..J. is an enigma, and many theorize he was once a "Stealth," those select group of bombers who annihilated entire Independent colonizations during the war. Of course, this causes the crew of Serenity to despise him for the lives he's taken. His whole life changed when he met Book, who showed him the way.
