What exactly is Shepherds story? Is he some kind of 'seen the light' ex criminal? He seemed to know a hell of a lot about bad guy tactics and what the hell is that ID pass that got him no questions asked treatment on board an alliance cruiser all about? Will we ever find out now that they killed him off?

REAVERMAN

I think he was either an operative or high up ex-military. Either one would explain the knowledge and the pass, as well as his ungodly (no pun intended) skill with weapons.

You're welcome on my boat. God ain't.

He was probably a operative. He seemed a lot like the operative in the movie.

I'm convinced that Joss at least wants us to think he was an operative, all the signs point to operative.

"Haha, mine is an evil laugh."

just wish they would sanction another series!! Such an amazingly original sci-fi series, cannot believe it got cut-short :disappointed As for the question - must have been operative, but would love to find out in a new series :)

Ex-operative would be my guess as well.. did his time and bowed out... possibly on questionable but mutual terms.. which would be why he received TOP attention at the med facility.

Why he was searching for transport and finding Serenity somehow leans me to think he was fleeing their influence once and for all..

Which is reason number one why I don't think he's an operative.

I love Joss. I just don't trust him as far as I could throw a planet.

STICK

well considering his knowledge of how the operatives work tends to point to one of 2 options:

1) He was a High ranking Military/government official.

2) He was an operative himself.

I personally lean towards #1 myself, mainly due to his reaction to the death of the fed in the pilot.

BOOKSWORD

Actually it turns out that he is Mals father, who worked as an Alliance spy gathering intel on the outer rim and possible strike areas if war should break out.

Ironically he left Shadow out of his report dispite its tactical value because of his affair with Mals mother. Despite this the planet still got the Giose bombed out of it during the war.

Neither Mal nor Book knew of their connection. Mal finds out in Serenity 2 the Reaver Gambit and this discovery brings him close to Inara. FINALLY consumating their luve.

It could happen.

Right ?
