Howdy All,

First of all, I want to again thank those who generously contributed to this years effort to help raise awareness of the Firefly/Serenity 'verse via the PBS On-Air Auction here in SE Wisconsin.

The donation phase of this effort has now concluded.

Summary:
Total Raised: $243 and 1 Serenity RPG Book

I am now pursuing the purchase of as many Serenity DVDs as I can afford with the donated money. I hope to get everything together and donated by Wednesday April 26th. (2 days before the auction starts.)

I will post pictures of everything soon after.

Thanks,
-Dave (suinegagpf)

Howdy all.

Again, I would like to thank all those who contributed to last year's effort to promote Firefly/Serenity via the Channel 10 Great TV Auction here in SE Wisconsin. For those unfamiliar with that effort, check out this thread:
http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=19173

With this year's on air auction fast approaching, I'd like to again extend an opportunity to those interested in helping to promote Firefly/Serenity in SE Wisconsin. Similar to last year, I don't believe that I alone possess the discretionary income necessary to see this effort through to its desired end. Unlike last year however, I've already gone ahead and purchased 14 Firefly DVD sets on my own coin to donate. Here is a picture of those sets:

My goal this year is to donate 14 Firefly/Serenity theme packages to the local PBS station. This translates to a total of 14 promotional spots over the course of a week of afternoon and evening on-air time. To this end, I'd like to pair each Firefly DVD set already on hand with it's own corresponding Serenity DVD. (This year's on-air promotion minimum value is $80 which fits nicely as the MSRP for the Firefly DVD set is $50 and the MSRP for the Serenity DVD is $30.)

Here's where your assistance is welcomed:
If you'd like to donate a few dollars to help purchase Serenity DVDs to be donated with the Firefly DVD sets to an on-air auction fundraiser for a SE Wisconsin Public Television station, click on the following link:
(PayPal Donation Link Removed - Donation Phase Concluded)

This year's promotional goals:
- Keep the message simple. In previous years, I've had to pad the value of the donations with items only true fans would have been interested in. This year I'm deliberately keeping the packages simple to try and lure in bidders who would have maybe purchased Firefly or Serenity previously had they thought they were getting it for a good deal.
- Help raise awareness that Serenity is out on DVD. I don't recall seeing a lot of public promotion to that effect around these parts.
- Help raise awareness that Serenity is derivative of Firefly. I wonder how many people have seen Firefly and aren't even aware of Serenity and vice-versa.

My tentative plan:
(X) 1. Setup PayPal link to accept donations for the next couple of weeks.
(X) 2. Use money raised to purchase as many Serenity DVDs from Amazon.com as is affordable. (Would like to purchase at least 14 Serenity DVDs for donation.)
[_] 3. Donate the items to the PBS auction under the name of "Friends of: ???" . I'm still considering how best to use the promotional spots. I'm thinking of splitting the donations into 2 groups and donating half the sets on behalf of "Friends of FireflyFans.net" and the other group on behalf of "Friends of Equality Now". (Why FireflyFans.net? I think it is a good gateway site into the browncoat community and it doesn't have a complex URL.) I'm willing to consider other suggestions though.
[_] 4. Donate any money left over directly to the PBS station.
[_] 5. Record the auction to see how much each item was auctioned off for. Provide pictures on-line with a summary of donations and what the money was used for just in case anyone wants to double-check my accounting practices.

For more info on the auction:

The auction starts April 28th, 2006. To make sure I have enough time to order the DVDs and get them at the best price, I will be removing the above donation link on April 20th.

Thanks,
-Dave (suinegagpf)

Total so far: $60 and 1 pledged Serenity RPG Book.

Just a reminder that I'll only be accepting donations for about one more week before I have to order stuff and get it ready for donation to the auction.

---

For those a bit wary of sending strangers money especially via the internet perhaps I should have introduced myself a little upfront.

How I became a fan of Firefly:
Flipping channels one day, I acidentally stumbled on Buffy. Got hooked. The next year I made it a point to check out Firefly as it was advertised as being another Joss Whedon creation. Got hooked on Firefly. Accidentally stumbled on Firefly Immediate Assistance site shortly before the show was officially cancelled and have been trying to find ways to get more people hooked on it and demanding more episodes ever since.

What I've done to bring others into the fold:
I'll keep this short. I much prefer to lurk rather than brag.
About two months before the movie premeire, I designed and had 200 license plate frames promoting the official movie site professionally printed. I gave all of them away to loyal Browncoats who promised drive them around in conspicuous places.
Before that I constructed special care packages that I sent to Browncoat groups willing to host fan tables promoting Serenity at various conventions. While not containing a whole lot of any one thing, I tried to include a few splashier, professionally printed items.

Why I'm asking for assistance on this project:
This project consistently falls in a bad month for me. I always end up owing the IRS money.

Why I consider this project important:
IMO, the fundamental problem in turning people on to this show/movie (without personally handing them the disks) is the lack of advertising. Promoting Firefly/Serenity via the PBS on-air auction provides an opportunity to reach many more people.

I'd say a lot. I had a friend who we started talking about Serenity last week. He hasn't seen it (and I didn't get to try for him to watch it last week but I will) and when I was talking about it and the series his comment was "that's the same show?" I was amazed he didn't know that (I knew when I saw the first preview that Serenity was from the series). So my goal is to have him watch the movie and series. I'll get him hooked yet.

One day.
One plan.
One army of Browncoats.

On June 23rd, we aim to misbehave.
