Okay, I deeply apologize if there has already been a thread like this, but I always find them interesting. It starts with a very simple question. What does your screen name mean?

Most people just assume mine is a misquote of one of Wash's most famous lines, but in truth it is actually a nod to that and the beginning of
Forest Gump one of my other favorite movies and one I quote almost as often as Firefly and Serenity. Anywho, on to the next person.

MILFORD

My name actually has a long and interesting story. I suck at coming up with things like that so I used my last name. Wait, that does suck, but it isn't that long. I'll make it longer, here we go, um, it's also my dad's last name, and his father before him. We have a long history with this name. Very handy. That's all I've got. And they lived happily ever after, somewhat moved by the important lessons they had learned along the way, but better for it.

ARCADIA

I started writing fiction at 13 I started looking at named websites to find character names. I decided to start posting on one called UUNC (unique, unusual, and creative names) and I wanted a name that was, well, unique, unusual, and creative. I found a long list of alternative names to Caitlin. I figued that since Caitlin is basicly the new Katie (Katie is my name) that these names were basicly alternative to my name, too. I chose Arcadia because I liked it best on the list. I use it here, on UUNC, and behindthename.com.

I used FireflyFi on nanowrimo.org, because I signed up last september and Serenity was so close to being release... Fi are the first two letters of my last name, pron. FEE. Some of my friends call me by this name. :-)

SIGMANUNKI

Well a bit of a story.

While driving with a buddy, he started telling me how much his brother hates Leonardo DiCaprio. He told me that his brother said that there should be another character in all Leo's movie call Clubby The Bat Wielding Clown. Then when Leo said something stupid Clubby would come on screen and beat Leo's pretty boy face in with his bat.

I said, that that'd be a great handle. He then took it before I could claim it. So, my search continued.

Now my handle comes from when I was doing some hobby research into the ancient Babylonian religion.

From memory, or perhaps I crossed a number of concepts, Sigma Nunki is the capital city of the gods. Also sigma is a mathematical symbol and Nunki is Akkadian for "The prince of the earth."

Nunki is also an acient Babylonian proper name.

Actually, just looked it up:

http://www.mazzaroth.com/ChapterThree/SumerianInfoOfAnnunaki-Anakim.ht
m

Nunki is all the above. Sigma probably got put in there because I'm a mathy person

ORPHEUS

A lot of people think my name is a direct reference to The Matrix, but all of these people must not have paid any attention to those movies, since my name is not Morpheus.

When I was thinking up names, I wanted to go with something from Greek or Roman mythology. The story of Orpheus and Eurydice was always one of my favorites, thus, my name.

Also tying into the mythology bit, since a lot of planets/moons in The Verse have mythological names, I thought Orpheus sounded like a good name for a planet.

Then there's the easy explanation: I was listening to the song "Orpheus" by a band called Ash when I was thinking up names.

Laziness?

No, really, when I first signed up for an account here I tried three different user names that I thought were witty or creative and all of them were taken. So, frustrated I just entered "Browncoat1". Suprisingly it was not taken. That or everyone is more creative than that.

I'm not a geek. Not smart enough for that and I'm worse than a dork. Why? Because I'm an old dork.

NUCLEARDAY

What's this? A chance to talk about myself? No... I couldn't ;p Oh wait. Yes, I can :)

It's sort of wonky out of context, but well... I've been using this handle for many moons and I suck with picking names, and well, it's still what I use for my emails and such, so it'd be a bother to change everything and it looks like it's here to stay for some time.

It's sort of a play on words. It's from a story I've been working on for... oh, a decade now, and it doggedly refuses to get, well, anywhere. (Yeah, it's a cliche doing the struggling writer thing, but hey the chicks dig it :) The title's A New Clear Day, and in the context of the story it's sort of a metaphor. (I'm a sucker for post-apocolyptic genre stuff so I thought I'd try one about people trying to find meaning in their life after the Big One, a reason to go on, etc.)

Anyways, it's now my albatross, if you will. And I still find it relevant, I guess. Like the death card in tarot, for me it signifies transition as opposed to an end. Tragedy and loss sucks, but I've found it also reminds me to focus on the important things in life. And that's enough waxing philosophical for me :) Anyways, I always enjoy reading how people pick their names, usually an interesting story, figured I'd throw my two cents in.

KAYNA

I love my captain

Mine has no real story or meaning. I just made it up `cause I think it sounds cool. It's actually a shorter version of a name I use in video games, Kayna Rune. Another one that I use is Shi'ara Blade or several variations thereof.

At www.wotmania.com I use Aourune Sedai. Again, first part made up. I won't explain Sedai here but if you're familiar with "The Wheel of Time" by Robert Jordan, you'll know what it means.

Anyway, I just like to make up names.

SIGMANUNKI

It's nice to know that I'm not the only one with a name based on something old. Not that I'm surprised at all. We got a smart bunch of people here. It was bound to happen.

Mmmmm, literature.

Now I'm in a sharing mood So, another story.

Once in high-school, I was at a buddies house, just sitting around. He asked me if I wanted a beer. I was driving so I declined.

But, he kept pressing the issue. Stuff like, come on, it's only one and we're not going anywhere for a couple hours. etc etc. I'm sure most of us have been there.

After refusing several times (he wasn't getting the hint) I decided to say "No!!! Peer Pressure!!!" in a funny way, as kind of a joke. Perhaps he would stop.

I don't know what happened, but it came out wrong. I miss-pronounced Peer. It came out Beer.

So, "No!!! Beer Pressure!!!"

I do think that some actually came out his nose. Wacky fun

I've actually considered using it (Beer Pressure) for a handle, but eventually ended up deciding on Sigma Nunki.

Ah nostalgia...

REGINAROADIE

Two things lead to my name.

The Regina part is because I've lived the last five years of my life here in Regina, Saskatchewan (that's up in Canada, y'know). For all intents and purposes it is my hometown, so I pay tribute to it.

And the roadie bit is from the fact that I love travelling and going on road trips. I also wouldn't mind being a roadie for a really good rock band. I have no idea how one becomes a roadie and if it's just a summer thing or if one could make a career out of it. But I just think it would be cool to tag along with someone like Sam Roberts or something like that.

I came up with the name two years ago. I was planning this road trip to end all road trips that fell apart at the last minute, and I created a new e-mail address for potential people to come with to contact me. So I guess it kinda stuck.

I don't mind. Think it's rather catchy.

BLUEEYEDBRIGADIER

Well...where mine comes from is a funny story.....

Basically, back before I officially joined, a lurked a lot (shameful, I know ). For some reason, after reading some fics and noticing images of the male BDHs (excluding Book sadly), a plot bunny started percolating in my then shaggy melon about our four blue-eyed BDHs needing to rescue their brown-eyed lovelies (cuz if you use the Joss-certified (mostly) pairings of Mal/Inara, Zoe/Wash, Simon/Kaylee and Jayne/River, you get four couples with the same gender-to-eye colour matches).

So...from there, the plot bunny started growing and I though about a fic title like "The Blue Eyed Brigade" in reference to Serenity's male crewmembers (was working on a slightly/moderate AU premise that only Book got offed in the BDM).

But then I realized that to submit the fic, I needed to join...which i was gonna do anyway regardless of a fic evolving in my head. So I started thinking about what screen name to have...until it hit me. As the author, I got to command the actions of the BEB (see the corrolation yet ) in the story (plus I am blessed with azure-tinted peepers myself), I thought "Hell, why not 'BlueEyedBrigadier?"

So that's the story of the name...that so far hasn't gained any meaning since no fic has been written of yet...mainly cuz I couldn't figure out how to have the ladies get captured when you have a solider, a psychic assassin, a Companion with at least decent self-defence skills and a mechanical genius as the four characters.

An old fashioned word for sleepwalker... ROCKETJOCK

Mine comes from an odd little film called "J-Men Forever", which got quite a bit of play on the USA network's old "Night Flight" weekend programming block in the 80's.

It consisted of footage from a number of old Republic Studios cliffhanger serials cut together and re-dubbed to a script written by two members of the Firesign Theater comedy ensemble. The resultant wonderful mess centers on a war waged by government agents and superheroes against dope smugglers from the moon.

"RocketJock" was the name the film gave to the Rocketman/Commando Cody character, and I immediately adopted it as my call sign in the Blue Blaze Irregulars (a Buckaroo Banzai fan group). It's served as a fannish handle in various ways ever since.

Bwah!

ZOID

zoid is a Greek suffix meaning "animal; living being; life". That's why it's uncapitalized. I pronounce it "zo'-id", as opposed to "zoyd".

v/r,
-zed

P.S.
There are many other zoids on the net. I'm none of those. Think of me as a 'protozoid'.

Heard it somewhere once, thought it was pretty.

Everything's shiny, Cap'n. Not to fret.

SERENITYSEEKER

It's what I seek.

In one sense, I'm looking for our beloved ship to return to us someday, our favorite band of misfits sailing through the black.

In the other sense, it's what I look for in everyday life. The world's too gorram crazy nowadays, and people die of too many stress induced problems. I've realized there ain't nothin' in this world gettin' too high-strung over so ya just gotta settle down and find your own little place of Serenity.

Keep flyin'.

XXBROWNCOATXX

I do say, Everything I thought up was already taken. So, as you can see I got veeeery creative. I lost many nights sleep and stressed long hours to come up with this name.

"See, morbid and creepifying, I got no problem with, long as she does it quiet-like"

MAGHAFFAR

Most mishaps in aviation and computer interfacing come down to two words:
Pilot Error.
I'd just found this site & wanted to get involved,
so I typed my standard username of MAGHAFFAR,
but was planning on using "Crazy Ivan"
as a s/n 'cuz I love things that fly [planes, spaceships, etc/]
plus I knew that "barn swallow" and "crazy ivan" were both flying jargon --
love Wash's line: "Here's something you can't do." -- anyway, Pilot Error
intervened in my attempt to edit / change my s/n after I'd entered MAGHAFFAR,
so there it remains.
Oh, the "m" is for Mohammad, the "A" is for Abdul. Ghaffar is the last name.
