not sure if this is blasphemy but...

i saw serenity before firefly and thought it was great, but then after watching the series it didnt seem quite so good! im not sure if this is just me so was just wondering.

i mean i think the film is good but it doesnt seem quite as funny as the episodes... or maybe the whole wash dying kind of blinded me.

for some reason i enjoy watching episodes more than serenity. anyone else find this?? if so could you explain why because i cant really explain it...

you are quite right, the movie has a much darker feel to it than the series. I also prefer the feel of the series, the movie was good, but the series was better.

I love Serenity but I enjoy Firefly way more. For me, I like the smaller stories, the stories about the crew and the family that the crew makes. I like the stories about the ship. I like the warmth, slowness and closeness of the series. We're just watching life on Serenity in Firefly.

Whereas in the movie it's a big grand story. It's the big picture, it's the big questions with the big answers. It's good but I prefer the show. Also I found the movie a bit cold and distant, I'm guessing that is mostly because they couldn't assume people knew all the backstory so they had to strip some of the stuff out.

Plus I have a hard time watching Serenity because the whole thing makes me cry, because I just keep thinking

'Oh God! They killed Book! Oh God! They killed Wash!!!'

and 'This might be the last we see of Serenity and her crew'.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I doubt it is just you, as a matter of fact I know it is not just you.

I too liked the series more than the movie. It is not just that there was more of it, it is the facts that we had more time to delve into characters, relationships, plots, history, etc. The series also did not have the slightly rushed feel that the movie did.

The movie was great in its own right, but I will take the series any day.

yeah i think that may be it. i think its the normal stuff. one of the great things about firefly is that its not this epic space adventure, its just some guys on a ship.

"Psychic? Sounds like something out of science fiction."
"We live on a spaceship, dear."
"So?"

that kinda thing. and wash doesnt have a big enough role in serenity...

I too saw Serenity before I saw Firefly. I really liked the movie, but the series has so much more that the movie can't touch. I can say that after watching the series, I went back and watched the movie and liked even more than watching it the first time.

yeah I think that's the generally what everyone I know who's seen the movie, then watched the series has thought. As a matter of fact it's become my recruiting strategy...

Invite recruitee's over to watch the movie on 'movie night' then almost everyone is like "hey that was pretty good" then I say "Yeah it's good, but it's nothing compared to the series" *show em the series* and like 3 outa 4 will usually come back with "OMG I can't belive that show got canceled after one season"

*sigh* if only fox would have given the show a chance

I think Serenity is better than the series and I think the soundtrack is better. Now go ahead and stone me Episodes like "OMR" and "Jaynestown" seem awfully pointless against the scope of Serenity.

@Sofi:
Certainly not blasphemy!

I have two takes on the movie. From a general action SciFi persepective it was better than most. But, from a Firefly perspective... not so much.

The main problem is that the series is character driven whereas the movie is action driven. Completely different beasts. Since the character driven thing was at the very heart of what Firefly is, the movie didn't live up to the series one little bit (IMO).

There were also significant differences in the characters. Some people try to justify this, but I really just think it's peoples need to justify things to make them better than what they are because they won't be able to cope with something substandard after waiting for so very long (Wow, that was long ). No-one like to be disappointed. Nothing they have said is very convincing.

There is also differences in the universe. The series had little to no Japanese influence in it wereas the movie had much more Japanese influence than Chinese (culture wise).

There are other things, but I'll leave it at that because I really have no desire to discuss this at length... again.

I think you'll find that the community here is quite split on this topic.

Just thought I'd try to answer your question

I'd venture to say a majority of Browncoats like Firefly better than Serenity. I know I do. The 'verse, the stories, the characters were all conceived and designed for a serial television format. Joss never intended it as a movie - it's just that FOX cut down something magical that demanded to be continued, and a movie was the only means of doing that.

"That's not much."
"It's enough."

That's not blasphemy. Blashphemies are artificial organs that are grown in a lab and transported in human bodies ;)

TV on DVD is hard to beat, and that's how I watch/ed Firefly. I think it's great the way that each (the TV series and the movie) can either stand alone, or hook together, depending on how you want to look at it. Like Joss said, the movie is way more epic, you get a little more epic characterization... which is cool, but sometimes you want your family, your buds to hang out with in the kitchen with the flowery patterns on the walls. Same people, different moodes, equal awesomeness in my books (though I am more frequently in the mood for the series, which I think is to be expected, generally).
