I read somewhere awhile back that Alan was signed to several features and that Joss wanted to bring him back, albeit not in any cliched way. I'm interested in what is considered "cliched" way. The only ones I can think of is cloning, twins, and flashbacks. Does anyone else have any ideas? Ultimately, how would Alan come back without being "been there done that" sort of way?

A rose by any other name...

I think mostly in a clone and twin type of why. I wouldnt rule out flashback cuz that not what i see as cliche.

From most to least cliched: twins, cloning, flashbacks.

Honestly, flashbacks is about the only thing I see working. I have confidence that Joss could do so in a artful, non-cliched way.

Somebody suggested that Wash could appear as a kind of "ghost", strictly within River's mind -- sort of a psychic imprint. It doesn't really appeal to me, but it's another idea.

I'm thinking stories told about the crew from BEFORE meeting the Tams. There is alot of story to be told since the show didn't even finish a complete season,...also, there could be fill in stories BETWEEN the series and the film.

Honestly, the show could easily continue without Wash. He always was given the worst lines, anyways. Profoundly: "Lets get to the beacon." It'd be a little darker, without Wash and with a mourning Zoe. There'd be a definate dark spell around, one that would wrench all of our hearts. And then Mal will shoot a puppy, and it'll all be alright.

Remeber River's reaction to Book's hair? She was having premonitions...

In homage to Star Trek, in the sequel we discover that River is carrying the psyches of both Book and Wash, which starts making her crazy (not that anyone can tell). The crew only believes her after some hot girl-on-girl action between Zoe and River, where River uses the secret "touch" that only Wash knew. The crew must raise enough money to buy clones to host the psyches (turns out that Inara knows a ritual for transferring psyches a la Jack Chalker).

After a number of hair-raising heists, our intrepid crew arrive at "The Island", only to learn that they don't have enough money to clone both of the dearly departed. However (spoiler) they do enough to buy a two-headed clone, allowing River to dislodge her "cargo". The Book-Wash being emerges (played by Alan Tudyk and the voice of Ron Glass), whereby the crew discovers that Book's hair was mixed up with Llama hair from River's environmentally friendly feminine hygiene products...

Okay, Joss, you can come out now. I know that's you, don't try to hide.

Right, Alan coming back. Sure and it just isn't the same without Wash, but...hmm...maybe if he was a specter visible only to River and/or Zoe? And then only temporarily? Just a thought.

Come on guys, Wash ain't dead!!
Sure he was run through with a pole the size of your kneecap, but it was below the chest and missed every vital organ known to man.

They left him there because they thought he was dead and anyway he was pinned to the pilots chair. With the exception of Jayne pulling out a handy chainsaw from his grenade pouch there was no way of cutting him loose.

There doesn't have to be twins or clones or happy spirits floating about to have him return. Wash is Wash, still alive and breathing.

Well what about the headstones you say. Well it weren't a headstone(as jayne would say). Just a tribute the those thought fallen along the way. Remember Shepherd Books tribute was there too, yet where was his body? ON ANOTHER PLANET, and what about Mr. Universe? His love bot was in the tribute too. What happened? Did her batteries suddenly run down. Nope,Joss was just paying homage. I wouldn't be surprised if Book were standing on a hill watching it all.

I had a thought about this, if Book was an operative or something, his death couldve been faked by himself, so as he throws the alliance off their trails. Sort of confusing them, as they killed everyone close to Serenity's crew, it would seem kinda logical as he had befriended the crew.

Besides, ive read somewhere or heard it that Joss had said that the movie could be taken, if the series gets a new season, be in no relation to the movie, or an abbrieviated version, therefore, what happened in the movie doesnt actually have to translate in the series.

"Undoing" the events of the movie to spawn a new series would be the lamest of the lame.

What I don't get is why you all assume he simply can't be Wash...Who says any new Firefly projects have to be after Serenity? Firefly is a series, Serenity is a movie, I think it'd make far more sense if any new episodes continued from the series and not from the movie.

If there is any specific reason why not, please tell me...

Joss" I don't deal with lose well."

Myself, I have taken a gander at all the bonus material and can tell that Joss is a very creative and talented writer. Even with all the speculation here I'm sure if his idea is to bring Wash back, he is clever enough to do it with a exciting new twist. With a new series Wash could return, maybe not in the first couple of shows but after that who knows.

"Wash is dead. Get over it" That may very well be but in todays age writers almost never close the door on a character completly. They can be resurrected many times. How about our Mrs. Reynolds? Last time I seen her(as JWS) she was bottled up in a trash container. Is she gone too?

Somewhere in the the bonus footage joss talks about telling Alan of his demize in the movie "He took it well". If my company folded I could deal with that. Maybe this is how Alan felt. But if the show came back along with promise of a steady paycheck he might do a little more kicking and screaming to return to his pilots chair. After all whose going to inject those "one line" zingers ie. " Besides Jayne, no one else is saying that." and also keep the dust off of those toy dinosaurs?

Just some thoughts, Z

Greatblackthorn, that is an option, but a sad one knowing how Wash gets it in the Serenity movie.I can't help but thinking if they brought him back by just turning back time I may laugh my head off at every punchline he delivers just because I know he gets scewered in the end.

1. Turns out Zoe is pregnant.
2. Zoe's baby turns out to have Wash's face.
3. I mean literally Wash's face. (ewww)

Okay, forget it. Terrible idea.

The "poem" is actually a song called "I'm Gonna See Serenity," and you can find it by checking my Annoyingly Long List of Links. It's a great song. And no, I didn't write it.

WHOME

How 'bout Zoe having a dream about him? Or watching a video with him in it? Maybe a video will or last letter that he left for her? Or, Zoe or River continually imagine him being there and talking to them, a la Six on Battlestar Galactica.

Hmmm, those are interesting speculations and very valid points. I can definitely see things going in any particular direction, and would like to see the actor/character come back sometimes. Through this thread I've found that I'm more biased towards the actor than the character of Wash, so for me, any Firefly based feature with Alan in it is a plus in my book.

More cliche ways to bring back Wash/Book:

1) You can always "Higher Being" someone back to life -- You can never count someone out of stargate or startrek, because even though they may be dead as a doornail, they're frequently resurrected by an "ascended being" or whatever. BIG CLICHE. (This would be tough, since Joss thankfully never introduced a "godlike" Q-type character)

2) Exposure to unknown substance/environment X -- Here's a more feasible one. Since Serenity went to the secret infected world, they were exposed to "substance x". The properties of "substance x" could be used for any number of cliches... First one that pops into my head, Wash turns out to be part of that tiny percentage that turns reaver and the side effects of turning make him strong enough to survive. "Substance X" could be used to resurrect/plague any member. Get creative. Wash as reaver vs. Zoe? Classic zombie movie dilemma. Just coming up with cliches.

3)Computer Replication of Identity - Won't go too far with this one since Firefly doesn't indulge itself in "Holodecks". However, you can copy a personality into a computer. This is very cliche. You can also holo-project them like in Voyager. Finally there's the "ghost in the machine" aspect. You could have Wash be dead, but somehow bonded into the computer that he rode so gracefully like a "leaf on the wind". Maybe Kaylee will be confused when her systems start to develop a mind of their own. Another cliche.

4)You can always "Obi-Wan" Book. - He's the religous character. It makes sense. However I really like what someone said earlier about Book being an old operative, and faking his own death through cunning. That would be better.

5)Aliens - Im not going here, because Joss has kept aliens out of the mix. But it's always a good cliche.
