Hello everyone, now my apologies if this topic has been debated many times prior, but I'm new to these boards and have only recently re-hooked myself back onto the Firefly series.
My names Daniel, I'm Australian, and like you all I'm absolutely devout to the firefly series. We all know Fox are idiots, their idiocy has been pointed out in many reviews simply for cancelling the show which had such potential for greatness. I've got every episode, aired and unaired on dvd and purchased a short while back the Serenity movie. A question though, with the movie now in motion does Joss plan to leave it there? Or is he still working on recreating the series itself? Even after the movie and all the episodes there's still much enigma around certain characters and sooooo much untouched storyline...He could continue the series in a both before and after scenario (because I'm sure like myself, many of you still want to see a bit of Wash and The Shepherd in action) all they need is the approval of another network, correct? I'm just wondering *if* the Serenity movie is where it all ends...Or do we continue hoping that Joss hasn't given up and plans to take it further? I've tried doing as much research to find an answer to my question, with no avail, so now I try here. The Q&A given gave some insight, but leaves so much to wonder...Is there really nothing we can do? Can't Joss appeal his case to another network? I myself am looking to close friends to see if they can contribute any form of sponsorship, but it's doubtful and like a dream in itself. I guess the real question we all want to know: Is FireFly returning to action? It seems almost unfair to leave the series dead in the water, bring out a film which teases but still gives answers -- like showing what River is made of -- and making no further effort after to renew the series...I guess I'll just hope to hope.

A lot of people are still hoping for a second movie as F*X will likely not give up the rights for another series.

Personally, I think that since the movie didn't exactly make much money, that it's over. I know I'm not alone here, but I don't know how many share my view.

There is some goings on with CW though. Nothing but rumors at this point. I think that there are several threads discussing this. Check the archive.

There is also a tv show that is starting up that is based in The 'Verse. Discussed here:

On the community level, there are a couple (I believe more than one) virtual season projects out there and the Blue Sun Room has fan fic in it. Also, there are (that I know of) a couple mods going on for games and one starting from scratch.

This is a very active community. So, regardless if anything new comes from the corps, we'll get more content

I think that pretty much sums it up.

But, I will have to mention the fact that pretty much everyone here is the bestest person you'll ever meet

So, stay, have fun, enjoy the site. Welcome

So I guess we are left hoping to hope. :( Shame too. I was really looking forward to JW unveiling some of the enigma around Shepherd Book. Then when he died in the movie...One great enigmatic character, shrouded by sooooooo much mystery which will remain like that. I hate being teased!!! Anyone know the Fox Studio executive addresses? Maybe we can 'persuade' them to bring it back on the air? :)

Sales of the DVD will decide whether or not we get another movie. And the DVD must be selling pretty well for Universal to bring out Serenity as one of their first HD-DVD releases. So I think we got a shot. Universal never expected Serenity to be a big hit so it's not like the box office didn't live up to expectations. If they take a chance on a sequel, they know they've got a few more people who would see it. The fanbase does keep growing.

There is the story of Austin Powers to cling to.

The first movie only took in $53,882,132 in theaters. But there was such a buzz on DVD sales that they made the second movie which then took in $205,957,794.

It CAN happen ;)

Plus, while Austin Powers was quite hilarious, it doesn't seem like the sort of franchise that would gather a group of hard-core fanatics like Serenity did ;p

The rational side of me has to admit that starting the series back up is a bit of a long shot. But I think the odds of a sequel the BDM are pretty good. The DVD sales seem to be doing fairly well (and I agree with SadLittleKing, I don't think expectations were all that high to begin with.) At least it sounds like there might be some 'coats among the powers-that-be within Universal.

'Course, it may take some time, too. Joss and co. are currently working on other projects, paying the bills, etc. But, I also don't see any of our Heroes turning down another chance revisit Serenity, either. Just might be awhile. After that... well, you never know ;p

BTW: Forecast for Hell, Michigan is cloudy with a low of 26 degrees and a chance of snow ;p

I really think that the SciFi channel (an American cable channel centered around... you guessed it... SciFi) could make money on t.v. movies. They don't have to try to market to a general audience- anyone who watches the SciFi channel is already a sci fi geek. (Fox's biggest mistake? Crappy marketing. I didn't watch Firefly when it was on because the commercials made it seem so uninteresting!)

Besides, all the people involved have moved on the other things now.

I think that Serenity has a good shot with a sequel being made. It'll just take some time. I believe the DVD has been released in all the regions planned so now everyone will just wait. Joss is busy with Wonderwoman and Goners, I'm guessing to pass the time.
Do remember that it takes years for sequels to be made. Just as an example, look at X-men comming out every 2 or 3 years or so. I think it'll be at least 6 months before we hear official news of a second movie but I think we'll get it none the less. As for a tv series, a miracle would have to happen. Someone would have to buy the rights from Fox most likely. But hey, I know what I'm doing if I win the lottery, buy rights or fund Serenity 2 and let Joss have his freedom.

I think I posted this in another thread, but lost it somewhere. AOL is getting ready to start showing several tv shows online. I have sent a suggestion to them that they try to pick up rights to offer Firefly as an online series. Not sure if it will help, but they do have the $$ to make it happen. The more suggestions they get on this, the better our chances. If you are an aol member, you can go to kw tell us to send in your request.

I almost didn't watch Firefly because of the way Fox promoted it. They made it look like it was gonna be a silly show. Showing Wash saying, "Who's flying this thing?! Oh right, that would be me.", and ending with the tagline, "...and a girl in a box." My initial impression was that it was gonna be some goofy show. Glad I decided to at least catch the first episode.

That's why I play the lottery. Maybe Fox and Universal wouldn't mind if someone else put up the money for a Serenity sequel.
