Get your minds out of the gutter, I'm talking about the deleted scenes from the BDM.

Just realized today that I hadn't watched the deleted scenes, so I watched 'em. I wish Joss/Universal would have left most of those in...especially the Inara scenes.

As I've watched and rewatched the movie, it always seemed to be missing something in the Inara department. She just didn't seem to have much of a part in the movie. The first time I saw the movie (my pre-Browncoat days), she just seemed like a gratuitous love interest thrown in for the sake of the plot...I didn't see much point in her being there except for the eye-candy factor.

Inara would have meant much more to new viewers had some of those scenes been left in place.

I liked a lot of the deleted scenes, but you can fully understand why Joss would have cut them out. He was giving us, the fans, a BDM, but at the same time he was greating something that had to have mass appeal. He had to attract new people, the fans alone sadly wouldn't have been enough to keep the movie profitable. He knew that. That's why when you listen to the commentary he talks about momentum so much. Momentum is of course important in any movie, but doubly so in a movie like Serenity.

Personally I agree that Morena got the shaft, I think Joss knows it too and hopefully in the future it'll be made up to her with some really solid scenes between Mal and Inara. The only deleted scene that I absolutely positively would have included that Joss cut out was the ending part with the Operative.

Sorry, let me clarify: I know WHY they got cut, just wish they hadn't. The film didn't do Inara's character justice without those scenes, and some of them might have cleared some things up for the general audience(I WAS the general audience when I saw the movie).

Usually when I watch deleted scenes, I'm GLAD they were deleted because they usually suck. But most of these scenes were excellent, and filled in some holes that needed to be filled.

Hi there,

Interesting thoughts - gotta say I too was a little saddened by the amount of time Inara (and Book, for that matter) got in the film.

I also watched the deleted scenes and really liked them (and if you listen to the commentary, Joss was fond of them too, and also expresses his sorrow that Inara's scenes had to be so heavily cut).

But in truth, I can understand why she was cut - those scenes were great, but they weren't vital to the story, they didn't advance the plot, and so, cool though they were they were just drawing out the running time. Now Browncoats like you and me, I'm sure, would happily sit through a longer edit of Firefly (hmm, perhaps a Director's Cut is in order) but I think (IMHO) Joss realised that all those new to the film might find those scenes too drawn out. He had to keep the pace tight and keep the story moving, and that meant keeping strictly to those scenes which advanced the story.

But at least we have them in the deleted scenes, so we can still see and enjoy those moments. But I have to say, it would be cool (and will probably never happen) if he could bring out a Director's Cut and let those people that want them enjoy the film fully 'restored'.

- Shiny. let's be bad guys.

I agree. Personally I would like to see BDM2 deal a lot more with Mal and Inara if for no other reason than it would be the first sci-fi romantic comedy. It could be great.

I just went through the deleted scenes again, and I'd have to say I don't think any of them should have been in the movie. The only one that gives any information that couldn't be inferred or was later given was the one between Inara and the other companion. A lot of people, watching the movie, really didn't understand Inara's occupation.

If you pay attention, everything that's said in the other scenes can be deduced or is later explained at a better time.

I guess I'm biased though, I don't think I've seen a directors cut that I thought wasn't worse than the theatrical release. Of course, my list to choose from isn't that big either.

I loved the scene between Mal and Inara as she goes thru her "box of sundries" in her shuttle. It's really a good scene and they aren't snipping at each other when he asks why she left and she asks why he didn't object to her leaving. Big character moment between those two.

I saw the BDM before I saw the series and the BDM told me that Inara and Mal had some sort of history but I didn't know the details. I kept wondering why she wore those wonderful clothes and where were they. Right afterward went out and bought the DVD's and now I've seen both upteen times.

It's a very Firefly moment, true. But I find myself agreeing with Joss that it makes the Alliance look a little too inept and bumbling. KF
