Hi. This thread is for Kaythryn. She wants us all to share what songs we have in our heads for The Intrepid Crew of Serenity.

I'll go first.

River: "Furnace Room Lullaby" by Neko Case

Now, I know y'all are probably sick to death of my evangelizing about Neko, but she stone cold rocks, simple as that. I suggest everyone acquire this song and others like it with all speed.

This one's gonna take some thought. First thing that popped into mind though was the look on Mal's face when he said to Niska "do you wanna see the real me?". That look, brrr, what I heard was 'Am I Evil' by Metallica. After all, he's a mean old man.

Quote:

"Will you follow me into fire? Will you follow me into darkness? Will you follow me into death?"
"I will."
"Then follow."

"Hide My Track" by Boiled In Lead is so my "Firefly" song.

I got no home I can go back to
I got no one to call a friend
I can't find the place I started
I can only guess how it will end.

CHORUS:
Keep them hounds off my trail
These jailers off my back
Get these bracelets off of me
A little rain to hide my track.

There's no whiskey in the jar
I'm so dry I need a drink.
I need a place to lay my head down
I need to find some time to think.

CHORUS

That old river keeps on rolling
And old Hannah won't go down.
I can't give back what I ain't taken
And I won't give up, if I ain't found.

I have nothing I can offer
I'm like a dog without a bone;
But if there's someone up there listening
There's a poor boy out here alone.

CHORUS

--
Some take the high road. Some take the low road.
And some just go screaming down the highway, dropping flaming bits of wreckage.

Word.

Every time I think I come up with something, I second guess myself and decide I'm dumb.

Seems every single song I hear I try to relate to Firefly and that's the problem. Listening to Sarah McLachlan now and thinking that "Good Enough" is a Simon-River-Kaylee song. Not in a crazy space incest way but more of a new family being formed kind of way.

Don't tell me why he's never been good to you.
Don't tell me why he's never been there for you.
Don't you know that why is simply not good enough.
Oh, so just let my try, and I will be good to you.
Just let me try, and I will be there for you.
I'll show you why is so much more than good enough.

And for Simon, I see shades of "Goodbye to You" by Michelle Branch. Sorta kinda maybe?

Heh. You know me and sex fantasies: The longing, the dreaming, the... hugging!

How many flavors of lame am I?!

Oh! Sexy Wash song though:

"Whip the Blankets" by Neko Case (who else?!)
(and note: some of her lyrics are indeciferable--naming rights of my first born to anyone can help)

Well it's hot in the ---- and it's cool in the bed,
And I'll whip the blankets into cotton thread.
I'll tear all the carpet up over my head
So my feet can go right through the basement.

Well you play so surprised at what you have found.
But I heard you comin' from way across town.
?And this beds a gettin'? I'm burnin' it down
?I've a fire and it's prayed in my madness?

Chorus:
Cos I'm steeped in this pleasure
And I've snapped from my tether
The ----- has vibrated hard.
And you lead me again to the back of the line
And we'll work our way slow to the start.

The dishes are broken and the kitchen's a mess.
I'm trapped in the ---- why don't you make me confess
Something something maybe the word delicious I make up my own words about Wash being hot and sexy

Chorus!
Steel guitar solo!
Chorus!

Well instinct is dirty and morality's clean.
And we're bound for damnation say those magazines.
The hell with the sorrow and watered down scenes
We'll burn us a ---- straight to heaven.

Chorus!

I admit it might only be sexy to me. Has a sexy beat, tho.

I just downloaded that and it almost made me cry.

It sounds like it would play if River was being taken back to the Alliance. Maybe if Simon was having flash backs- his childhood, freeing river, their life on Serenity, and then her being taken from him despite all the he went though to find her and keep her safe. She is the one person he really loves.

Oh, teary again!

Ooh! Stevie Ray Vaughan (spelling?)does a southern rock version of the Beatle's "Taxman" which I think perfectly expresses how Mal feels about the Alliance.
Similarly the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again."
The Steve Miller Band's "Take the Money and Run," cuz that's what they do.
I always saw "Carry On Wayward Son" as being a Simon song, or possibly a Mal.
A Tori Amos song would be great for River, becuase they often sound a bit like I would imagine River thinks, but I can't think of a specific one.
For Jayne, maybe ZZ Top's "Gun Love"
For Kaylee Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love"
and that's all I got.

Rush's "Bravado" makes me think of Mal. Last line also makes me think of Simon.

When the dust has cleared
And victory denied
A summit too lofty
A river a little too wide
If we keep our pride --
Though paradise is lost
We will pay the price,
but we will not count the cost

Since I'm oddly in a Michelle Branch mood tonight, "All You Wanted" seems like it would fit Wash--for Zoe, I mean, the words ... and if it were sung by a guy ... No? Maybe I'm just sleepy ...

Okay, this song makes made me think of Jayne for some pretty obvious reasons.

Ape man by the Kinks

The lyrics don’t really fit... with a possible exception to this part-

I'm an ape man
I'm an ape ape man
Oh, I'm an ape man
I'm a King Kong man
I'm a voodoo man
Oh, I'm an ape man

I look out the window
But I can't see the sky
The air pollution is foggin' up my eyes
I want to get out of this city alive
And make like an ape man

Still maybe not, but it gains points with me 'cause it's just too funny.

Hmmm... it's a very sad thought, but the song "Concrete Angel" really reminds me of poor River. *snifflesob* Especially the last two verses.

Someone crys in the middle of the night
The neighbors hear but they turn out the lights
A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate
When morning comes it'll be too late

Through the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place where she's loved
Concrete angel

A statue stands in a shaded place
An angel girl with an upturned face
A name is written on a polished rock
A broken heart that the world forgot

Through the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place where she's loved
Concrete angel

MARK

There's one song, a little Filk, that always reminds me of River in OiS... When she's pretending to be Serenity.

Phoenix by Julia Ecklar.

"My wings are made of Tungsten, my flesh of glass and steel. I am the joy of terror for the power that I wield. Once upon a lifetime, I died a pioneer. Now I sing within this space-ship's heart, does anybody hear."

Twelve spheres of unendurable brightness spalled the velvety blackness of space.
The silence on Lester Tourville's flag bridge was absolute
And then the spell was broken as Shannon Foraker looked up from her console from where she had just sent a seemingly innocent command to the main computers of State Security's finest Superdreadnoughts.
"Oops." She said.

HAPPYENDINGS

Ooh, happy topic.

* For Wash and Zoe (or any other FF couple/pairing, I guess), there's Bruce Cockburn's (or the kickass cover by the Barenaked Ladies) "Lovers in Dangerous Time."

These fragile bodies of touch and taste
This vibrant skin, this hair like lace
Spirits open to the thrust of grace
Never a breath you can afford to waste

When you're lovers in a dangerous time
Sometimes you're made to feel as if your love's a crime
But nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight
Got to kick at the darkness 'til it bleeds daylight

* For Wash and his insecurities, there's Student Rick's "Acoustic Song."

I'm watching you asleep
wondering if I'm in your dreams
did I catch you when you fell?
did I kiss your tears away?
'cause I just wanna be
the man she sees in me
he seems so far away
he's calling out my name
but can I ever be
the man that's in her dreams?
I pray to be one day...

* And for Mal and Inara and their little games, even though it's more of a song for after they get together and then lose each other (say, in season two or three), there's the Dire Strait's "Romeo and Juliet."

Come up on different streets and they both were streets of shame
Both dirty, both mean, yes, and the dream was just the same
I dreamed your dream for you and now your dream is real
How can you look at me as if I was just another one of your deals?

You can fall for chains of silver, you can fall for chains of gold
You can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold
You promised me everything, you promised me thick and thin
Now you just say, oh romeo, yeah you know I used to have a scene with him

You're quite right about the mis-quoting... I was listening to the song and transcribing and got it wrong... As for being after Challenger, I think you're wrong there. I think this one was written in 1983 and, if you listen closely, then it references 'Capsule 12' and lots about dying in fire. I think it's referring to the three men who died in a fire in the Apollo program. I believe it was Apollo 12. The door jammed and the matting caught fire.

The other song that belongs in a pair with this one is 'Fire in the Sky' by Dr. Jordin Kare that Buzz Aldrin quoted after the Columbia disaster.

"The Gods do not give lightly of the powers they have made, and with Challenger and seven, once again the price is paid. Though a nation watched her falling, now a world can only cry a they passed from us to glory, riding fire in the Sky."

Twelve spheres of unendurable brightness spalled the velvety blackness of space.

This is a perfect song for how Zoe feels about Wash! I see her getting mad at him and thinking “Sometimes I never want to see you again”, but then quickly going back to “You’re still the one that makes me laugh. Still the one that’s my better half, we’re still having fun, and you’re still the one.” The one *wink, wink* The one she chose. Here are the lyrics.

You're still the one-- Orleans

We've been together since way back when
Sometimes I never want to see you again
But I want you to know, after all these years
You're still the one I want whisperin' in my ear

You're still the one I want to talk to in bed
Still the one that turns my head
We're still having fun, and you're still the one

I looked at your face every day
But I never saw it 'til I went away
When winter came, I just wanted to go
Deep in the desert, I longed for the snow

You're still the one that makes me laugh
Still the one that's my better half
We're still having fun, and you're still the one

You're still the one that makes me strong
Still the one I want to take along
We're still having fun, and you're still the one

Changing, our love is going gold
Even though we grow old, it grows new

You're still the one that I love to touch
Still the one and I can't get enough
We're still having fun, and you're still the one

You're still the one who can scratch my itch
Still the one and I wouldn't switch
We're still having fun, and you're still the one

You are still the one that makes me shout
Still the one that I dream about
We're still having fun, and you're still the one...

I downloaded "Lover's in a Dangerous Time" and really like, except for that I really don't like that one guy's voice. Why do they let him sing? Anyway, it is very Wash'n'Zoe.

Dl'ing yours now, Kaythryn.

Somebody on the fox board mentioned "Your Body is a Wonderland" by John Mayer as a Wash'n'Zoe song, so now I always think of them when I hear it.

Haven't found one on my own that I would really say reminds me.

Question: Should "Baby Got Back" be a Browncoat Chronicles song!?

Maybe a more toward question should be: should I go soak my head?

No to the first and yes to the second. I think you've been video taping one too many Proms. Get out now before you start rappin' and wearing your pants around your ankles.

DOBSON: Okay. I can see you're not an idiot.

DOBSON: I'm supposed to be meeting my wife's sister. I've only got a few days to see her...

ZOE: I wish there was another way...

DOBSON: Oh, no, no. That woman is like a dragon. I mean, I believe she has a tail. If there's any other moons we need to visit, or if we could just
fly very slowly...

PAPERWASTER

The song "the widowing field" by Jars of Clay always makes me think of Mal and Zoe at the Battle of Serenity and the moment when Mal lost his faith.

I'm sure I could never make it through the night without you here.
The fires in the sky
illuminate the demons closing in.
Have mercy on my soul if I am not the last to go.
As I crawl around these trails and fight upon these widowing fields the ground below is bare and burned at the places that I learned to trust you.
Have mercy on my soul if I am not the last to go.
When even silence sets my heart to racing
I will lift my eyes to you
please Father, find me
Have mercy on my soul if I am not the last to go.

It is very plaintive with a lot of violin, so maybe that's the country feel you were looking for.
