I'm currently attending an art class at college (art is not my major, but a couple guys I know are in it, and it sounded relatively interesting). In the last class before winter break, our professor sort of offhandedly asked us who our favorite artists were. Yeah, there were the standard "Michelangelo" and "Raphael"s, but when he asked me, what did I say? Goddamn right. "Mphillips". As you might guess, this was met with a look of "who the hell is that", but I explained, and intend to show him some of your stuff when we have class again after break. Just wanted you to know. Please keep up the phenomenal work.

Matt

such talent should never go unrecoginized. I find your work incredible but what I find most amazing is that you aren't working as a full time graphic artist someplace like DC Comics or Marvel or even Dark Horse. Any one of those companies would be lucky to have you.

mphillips:

I'm with the others in singing your praises. Especially the ones who think you should be a professional artist for one of the comics outfits.

The thing with Art is, it's not always about perfection of technique, but rather the essence that is poured into it by the artist. This is true of music, writing and painting; I haven't had much exposure to other forms, but I suspect a similar dynamic holds sway.

...And, of course, we may take the example of a little, failed TV sci-fi series, which -- tho' it died an early and ignominious death at the hands of philistines -- still resonates within everyone who beholds it. Was Firefly perfect in its execution? I'll say 'no'. The production quality left something to be desired; some of the episodes had 'hokey' moments. But taken as a whole, Firefly was that most rare thing ever on TV: actual Art.

The exact same may be said of your works. They are Art, imbued with Life, which makes up for any stylistic criticism that magazine editors -- or yourself -- may throw at it. Thank you for sharing your gift with us...

Appreciatively,

zoid
