Okay, so I'm toying with the idea of doing my own extended cut of Serenity, and I thought I'd run my ideas past my fellow Browncoats, and see if ya'll have any more suggestions.

What I'm planning to do goes a little beyond just re-incorporating the deleted scenes into the movie. Here's what I'm panning so far:

--Re-incorporate all deleted scenes into the movie, as per their placement in the screenplay.

This will require a little bit of effects work, as there is just greenscreen through the shuttle windows in the extra Mal/Inara stuff, but that's relatively easy to do.

Some of the sound needs cleaning up in these scenes, but that's relatively easy.

The unfinished FX shot of the Operative's ship is a little trickier, since I don't have any way to re-render the ship. But I have a plan for that too:

--Add Alliance City-Ship to the film.

I want to remove the unfinished shot of the operative's ship, and compose a new shot useing existing footage. I think I can rotoscope (cut out) the Operative's ship from a shot or two from the finale (just before the Reavers come through the ion cloud), which I will then matte together with a shot of one of the Alliance city-ships from Firefly. I plan to cover the transition with a bit of added voice-over, something along the lines of "Refueling complete, good hunting." before cutting to the next shot of the Operative standing on the bridge.

--Add some outtakes in appropriate places.

Primarily, I want to use the outtake of Mal falling after he picks up the grenade and enters Inara's ship. Given the beating Mal just took, I think he'd still be a bit shaky. And, in the next scene/shot, Inara calls back to Mal from the cockpit "I told you to be carefull", so they'll dovetail well, I think.

I would also like to try to find a way to work Wash's "I don't need a back-spaceship driver" into the battle at the end. The only problem is that Jayne is still standing in the door at that point, which may create a continuity problem, but I may be able to erase him from the shot.

--New end credits

As the screen goes black, after the final "What was that?", I want to cut to a single title card reading "Written and Directed by Joss Whedon". As that card fades out, the original "Ballad of Serenity" would kick in. Playing on screen under the song would be a new credit sequence done in the style of the Firefly opening credits, but only useing footage from Serenity, and adding the Operative and Mr. Universe to the sequence.

Once this credit sequence was completed, the rest of the film credits would roll, but I want to push them off to the side a bit, and have the River Tam sessions playing in the back. Once the river sessions were over, the actual Serenity theme from the movie would play for the remainder of the credits.

These are just ideas for now. But I'd like to know what you folk think.

I don't know that I'll have the time to do it anytime soon. As it stands, I don't even know how to rip the files from the DVD into editable video files. All I have right now are DVD decryptor and DVD shrink. If anyone has any suggestions on how to rip the DVD to (preferably) AVI format, please let me know.

Put the original "trap" scene with the TRAP outtake. Also, could you cut out the Wash death scene and superimpose him in the background in the last few scenes? And maybe the preacher while you're at it?

"The people who made the show, and the people who saw the show, which is roughly the same number of people, fell in love with it, a little bit too much to let it go, too much to lay down arms when when the battle looked pretty much lost. In Hollywood, people like that are called unrealistic, quixotic, obsessive... In my world, they're called Browncoats."

OMG!!
I have absolutley no idea how to do anything like that, so I can't be much help, but if there would ever be a share-list for that, please, please put me at the top of the list.

Assuming this can be done and it's finished some day...then what? Making it availabe for download? Selling it? In a matter of days Universal would shut this thing down. This is no simple fanvid we are taking about here.

that all sounds awesome. as far as ripping goes, i've found a decent program that rips to .mov, .mpeg, .avi... its (i think because i don't have it here (i'm at work)) Xilisoft DVD Ripper... if you search google for a dvd ripper you will inevitably find that one. you can select chapters to rip just what you want. they have a free trial that only lets you rip 5 minutes of any one thing (including any one chapter.) the full version is like $35, which i'm seriously considering investing in. its pretty sweet. takes a while tho, but i'm thinking once registered, you can set it up to rip while you're sleeping...

totally wanna see what you come up with! :D

Just to clarify, since I just had a mini-rant on another thread about illegal activity in support of Firefly, if I do make a cut like this, it's for personal entertainment. I do not intend to make it widely available for download or such.

What I would consider doing is what I've seen someone do for a fan-edit of the last Highlander film; which is to provide copies (via snail mail or download) only to people who can verify that they do indeed own the original studio DVD. I still have to check on the legality, but I believe that if you own a copy, then a modified version would fall under "fair-use" (the same principal under which people in Utah can get copies of movies with the "nauhty bits" edited out).
