My sister and I have differing opinions as to Jayne's actions in this episode so I'm wondering what everyone else thinks. I thought that Jayne changed his mind and tried to get River and Simon out of the building before the feds could reach them, but then having been caught, he thought he could still get his money. I thought this was why he didn't want them to know what he had done at the end of the show. My sister thinks that Jayne never changed his mind and simply took them to meet the feds. She thinks that Jayne didn't want them to know what he had done because he felt guilty when Simon made him into a hero after they got back to Serenity. What do you think? Did Jayne have a change of heart, or was he really just out to get paid?

I agree with you that Jayne was starting to change his mind. Think it started when Simon saved that guy's life-watch his face when he is holding River back. He also hesitates when he sees the feds but probably feels it is too late to change his mind.

This post belongs in Firefly Episode discussions!!! BUT I SHALL ANSWER AS HONESTLY AS HUMANLY POSSIBLY ANYHOW.

In for the money, but after what Simon had said, and after what Mal had said (and punched him out) he changed his mind then. I think he is a lot more loyal after that day...

i guess only the writers know, and maybe not even. I think Jayne was definately changing his mind. Especially after seeing Simon save that man and then after Simon was telling what the Alliance did to River. I think he started to feel a little sympathetic there. as far as taking them to the feds goes, I was never sure if that is where he was supposed to take them, or if he had a change of heart and was leading them away, but just happened to run into the feds while doing so. i suppose it was probably the first one. But I do think Jayne was starting to rethink what he was doing.

i always thought that jayne took them out the back to meet the feds because there was money involved and that was the plan, because, although he may have hated simon a little less after seeing him in action (and after simon makin' a fuss about jayne's thrilling heroics), he still didn't think of simon and river as "on his crew." i always thought that when mal busted jayne at the end, it was a shock to jayne that mal would consider his (jayne's) actions as an affront to him (mal). because jayne would never (regardless of what he says), betray mal. but simon and river, on the other hand, weren't on jayne's crew (in his mind) it was fine to get rid of them.
when jayne says, "don't tell 'em what i did" i've always felt he was referring to the "crew", his crew. in that I mean Kaylee, Wash, Inara, Zoe and Book. he wouldn't want them knowing what he did, especially Kaylee.
in a way, i think you're both right. the "old" jayne wouldn't have cared who knew he had betrayed someone, but the change of heart wasn't necessarily determined by simon's actions. it's the loyalty that Mal inspires that i believe causes change in all of the people around him.

now, if fox hadn't cancelled firefly, we would have got to see where jayne went with his character development. i mean, in "the message" he was proudly wearing a hat his mom made. he was reading a letter which referenced the money he sent to his family. (and, by the way, that hat was cunning.)

i think this is the longest post i've ever written!

I think Jayne was turning them in. Remember that they had a plan for leaving the building, and he still took them out the wrong way because he knew the Feds would be there.

If he had changed his mind, he would have gone back to the original plan.
