I've been reading a lot of fan fic lately and almost everyone has Zoe pregnant or just had a baby and sticking with Mal and crew.

What if she wasn't pregnant after the BDM? Would she suck it up, keep the hurt to herself and remain Mal's right hand? Or would she drift away in her grief and leave Serenity?

I can see in Joss's devious mind Zoe trying to stay but eventually having the grief of Wash's death and her unacknowledged pain of her whole life get to her and either working through it in an uncharacteristic way or leaving.

Or worse, she has a miscarriage and that pushes her over the edge and we see "the REAL Zoe"...

Then hopefully we get to see why Mal is maybe a little scared of her.

I dunno. "She's tore up plenty but she'll fly true." Sounds like she's gonna stick it out to me. Will she be the same Zoe she was before? ALmost certainly not. But I don't see her leaving the man who got her through Serenity Valley over grief. If anything I think she would cling closer to Mal.

As far as a baby while I can see the atraction to the fanfic comunity to having a bit of Wash live on I think it's an unlikely developement. It would be too easy an out for Zoe to have Wash's child.

Now excuse me I have to go cry now.

I agree with DAVESHAYNE. Zoë loved Wash but Zoë could never leave Mal's side nor could Mal exist without Zoë. They went to hell and back; they saved each other's lives many times. If Mal goes on a mission he is taking Zoë. And only they know what it was like in the war, things that they never speak of and don't need too. Mal loves Inara, and Zoë loved Wash, but I think that Mal and Zoë have their souls connected. Near the end of the BDM in the Cargo bay, Zoë says and I'm paraphrasing here "we are ready to go".
Mal-- will she hold together?
Zoë--she is pretty beat up but she will fly straight and true.
Mal--could be a bumpy ride.
Zoë--always is.

Mal and Zoë were both talking about Serenity and Zoë not just Serenity.

Well that's my opinion; I would like to hear others.

I agree Mal was talking about Zoe more so than Serenity at the end of the BDM. I also think Mal loves Zoe with a silent fierceness that makes his romantic interest in Inara look like burnt toast. If Wash had escaped his infamous death and ever got the opportunity to hurt Zoe, Mal wouldn't have thought twice about putting day light through him. Zoe knows this and she knows the possibilites there. She'd never leave Mal easily.

I agree with this with the addendum that Mal appears to have a near River like ability to differentiate between the normal arguments of a commited relationship and actual permanent harm. Funny how he has this ability to read everybody elses relationships but he can't for the life of him see that Inara feels the same way about him that he feels for her.

An observation: Mal & Zoe are the future version of Simon & River.

River, like Zoe, is "tore up plenty," but will fly true. And Simon, like Mal, will walk barefoot through hell itself to protect "his crew."

(And I think Mal does know how Inara feels. That's exactly why they can't work. Mal's a realist, and he knows that if he and Inara were ever to get together, it'd end badly, for both of them.)
