Here’s the two nominated categories and the competition:

BEST SCIENCE FICTION FILM

Fantastic Four
The Island
The Jacket
Serenity
Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith
War of the Worlds

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Jessica Alba (“Sin City”)
Jennifer Carpenter (“The Exorcism of Emily Rose”)
Summer Glau (“Serenity”)
Katie Holmes (“Batman Begins”)
Michelle Monaghan (“Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang”)
Gena Rowlands (“The Skeleton Key”)

A number of folks over on Whedonesque have complained that Nathan didn’t get a nomination, and Joss has actually joined the chorus (see: http://whedonesque.com/comments/9550):

Okay. I'm gonna say it. I'm gonna skip a hundred catty comments and say I've enjoyed the Saturns because, well, mostly because I won one, but also because they celebrate the genre, and where else are you gonna hang out with Jim Cameron AND Stan Lee? And now I'm gonna tell you I'm disappointed.

Say it with me now: Nathan Fillion.

Not even a nod? A nom? I'm pleased as anything for Summer, and glad the movie made a showing at all, but for Nathan to be overlooked shakes my faith in this awards program, which is truly terrifying because it means I had faith in an awards program. I'm such a yob.

Nathan owned that screen. You went to see the movie, there was a little print on the screen that said "On Loan from Nathan Fillion." Textured, rich, funny, real, heroic... I don't know who else was nominated (and for the record, I think Tom Cruise was great in WotW), and I don't even think the movie is all that -- oh, I'm into it, but the more I look at it the more I go "They couldn't have got a director?" -- but Nathan is the man. He's all man. A man's man. Two men. He's like if Jame Gumb had been sewing a MAN suit. This has taken an unsightly turn, but you get where I'm going.

Well, I don't usually do this, but I'll tell you a secret. I'm dropping the BOMB on the Saturn awards and you got this straight from the hoses's mouth. The truth about the Saturns? A few weeks after you get them home, the glue on your name-plate dries up and it pops right off. You heard me. Award over HERE, nameplate sitting over THERE. That's how THEY roll, dog.

Wow. I went a little far there. Things were typed... But I'm truly bummed.

Go Summer!

-j.

Unfortunate for Nathan, but yay for Summer and our Big Damn Movie! And remember, there are two other major genre awards the BDM will be vying for, the Hugos and the Nebulas.

Cheer up Nathan, I hear it's an honor just to be snubbed. And good luck Summer. Now where do you suppose they keep the vote tallies for this thing? I'm thinking of maybe getting all Chicago on their ballots.

That's right, I've been honored many times ;)

But honestly, Joss dropping the bomb like that on the Saturn was just uncalled for. He pulled that name plate off himself and tried to Frankenstein it to an oscar!

My God, it's just unbelievable that they would nominate George Lucas for Screenwriter and not even glance Joss' way. And the injustice done Nathan is unfathomable to me.

He embodies our Captain. He makes me cry, he makes me laugh, I was afraid of him and in awe of him at points in the movie. Unbelievable performance and he is overlooked... casually, like his performance didn't even matter.

After looking over their list... I have no respect for the Saturn awards, and it would appear neither does Joss.

Only good thing I have to say re: this is that Summer should have been nominated for best actress in a LEADING role, she's not a supporting actress. And way to go Summer, your performance was amazing as well and you deserve the award. Katie Holmes... Jessica Alba???????? I just don't understand the world anymore.... *shakes head in puzzlement and wanders off...*

It really concerns me that Joss was so mad in (public) with the awards. I understand why he is mad but Summer and the BDM are still there and I think that this will really hurt their chances. It also concerns me the he might just pack it in on Serenity. Everybody but browncoats seems to be against him. I feel helpless and want to do something NOW to help Joss.

My view. Just keep on keepin' on. I know it does seem like everbody in the world should bow down to the genius of our Joss right now but these things take time. Think about it. Name 1 more director/screenwriter (excepting Minear) I doubt you can do it (I can but that's just because I'm related to her.) That's the way it is. It takes a lot of work and time for even the greatest of talents to penetrate into the collective unconscious. Joss will get there - he's that good. And when he does FF/Serenity will follow. (In some form at any rate.)

THe only movie that rivals "Serenity" is "The Jacket" and if any other movie wins I will have to sat that not a single voter saw Serenity. I have seen every movie on the Best Sci fi list. Why not have Sin City (if you can call it Sci Fi) on that list. There is something wrong in a world where someone get nominated for acting that is worse than and thing done on Joey (ok I might being a bit harsh on Katie Holmes but I think they cut out most of the scenes with her in it.) Katie Holmes is the worst part of that movie.

I guess he must browse some of it.

Summer deserves the very best of luck.
GO SUMMER!

Nathan is one of the greatest, most fun personalities i've seen in years. I share Joss's dissapointment.

Nathan deserves another rich role, but they're pretty rare to get up in the air these days.

Don't get me wrong... I love all our BDH's... but Nathan and Summer rocked in the BDM... Summer can have vulnerable moments and yet emanate such internal strength, while Nathan has the strong presence of a natural leader... the scene in the movie where Mal gives his speech while shooting the Alliance soldier had me in awe... my friend sitting next to me (who had never before seen Firefly and now loves it as much as I do) leaned over to me and said "Now that's how a real captain should act." I was practically giddy... Kudos to Joss for that moment; it was well written... and Nathan, you'll always be a winner in my book...

I'm betting the best movie goes to Star Wars, but lets face it, that whole trilogy was plain bad. Bad writing bad directing and even some bad acting.
But he is George Lucas, the man who can do no wrong, people lined up for days to see that crap.
But Serenity was fresh, different all around great movie. Even if you hadn't seen FireFly. I'm almost sure it will get the shaft on this, which is really awful.

Mal is what Han Solo should have been. Han turned gay real fast his theme should be that new Willie Nelson song! HAHA
Mal is all man, all good and most if not all of that comes from Nathan. So my hats off to you, even if they didn't nominate you!

Saturns are the Oscars of Sci-Fi.

I'm sorry, I mean Science Fiction. Somebody went balistic about how using "Sci-Fi" emasulated the genre or something. Harlan Ellison, probably. Sounds like something he'd do.

/me does a double-take...

Hayden Christensen??? Katie Holmes for Batman??? Jessica Alba???

Okay, Hayden Christensen couldn't act his way out of a paper bag, from what I'd seen in the prequels. (Okay, and alot of that blame goes to George Lucas... any director who makes Natalie Portman come off contrived and wooden gets a big black X in my book.) Could he BE any whinier?

Jessica Alba? I agree with the other poster, Jessica Alba's entire role in Sin City was to shake her ass. (Did a damn fine job, too, and if there was an award for that I'd be the first to vote for her :) And nothing against Sin City (HUGE fan of Frank Miller from way back), but the acting is not what I remember about that movie.

Katie Holmes??? Katie Frelling Holmes??? Okay, okay, she's adorable. I've sat through the entire showing of First Daughter, okay? If Summer doesn't totally stomp that girl so hard in that category that it gives Tom Cruise a nose bleed I'll be totally dumbfounded.

*wheeze, pant, pant, pant...*

Okay, I'm done now. ;p

Okay, how does The Island get on there? Has the world gone mad? Does anyone other than me know that The Island was a remake of a crappy movie called "Clonus: The Parts Horror"? Does anyone remember that Clonus was a Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode? This is a sad day indeed. And while I loved Episode 3 (yeah, I know, SW fanboy since I was 4 - don't blame me, blame my parents) I think that Serenity was the FAR superior movie. The fact that ROTS gets a writing nod and Serenity doesn't completely invalidates these Saturn awards in my opinion.

Yes, I believe I remember Ellison ranting about the use of "Sci-Fi" on some media news show they used to have on the "Sci-Fi" channel. I really enjoyed his commentaries, but I thought he got a little carried away with that one. It's like the squawk about "Trekkies" versus "Trekkers" (I say tomAto, you say tomAUto. I for one SLEPT through sin city..hated it really..As for WotW, Hated that too..still have Dakota screaming in my head from that one..thought Tom C SUCKED...I was so lookig forward to it..very disapointed..Island, that was crap also.
SERENITY- Best movie EVER..but even non Browncoats I have met, have said it was such a good movie..a few said,"when we saw Serenity up on the movie board, we thought it sounded like a chick flick." take that for what its worth..but I think that is part of the reason it did not get a lot of play..

I think Serenity and Summer definitely deserve their noms, but I’d have to agree that Summer should have been nominating in a leading roll, and not supporting. And Jessica Alba? Not that the chick isn’t hot, I’m sure, but all she did was pout and dance through the whole movie.

That definitely sucks about Nathan. I mean, he’s out captain, he brings the whole crew together and his performance was astounding. I guess, at least the fact that Serenity was nominated for anything is a good start.

Oh, I'm gonna go to the special hell.

The Saturn awards are actually open to public membership, and I joined this year with the hope of putting my vote in for Serenity. Unfortunaly they seem to choose certain areas where each person gets to nominate, I for example was only able to vote in the three best film categories (with Serenity obviously being my top pick in the Sci-fi section).

Hopefully, I will be able to vote in all the categories for the main award and I can put my vote in for Summer as well.

As someone mentioned above the Saturns are open for public membership that gives you the oppurtunity to see early screenings of genre movies and to vote for the Saturn awards. They ask you in advance what categories you'd like to vote in (you can choose two and everyone votes on the Best Movie(s) categories). I've voted for Firefly and Farscape for the last three years (tv and dvd).

The nominees are decided by Academy Commmittee members. http://www.saturnawards.org/vote.html

Voting is currently open (until March 24th) and the award ceremony is May 2nd.

Well not only did Nathan get snubbed by the Saturns...

In the April issue of Sci Fi Magazine, they wrote their take on "A-List talent sure to be ignored by the Academy come awards time." They list five 'nominees' in each category, including -
Best Picture: Serenity
Best Director: Joss Whedon
Best Actress: Summer Glau

BUT NO Nathan for Best Actor. That could just be your average oversight BUT right above that Best Actor column they have a picture of Nathan (FF pic). How rude!

The results of the Saturn Awards have Summer Glau taking home the Best Supporting Actress Prize.

The movie Serenity was also in the running for Best Science Fiction Film, that prize however went to StarWars Episode III.

STAR WARS III WON??? What in the gorram hell???

This isn't the first time I've ranted about this movie (see http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=19410). As I've said before, Serenity (and indeed, more than a few of the other movies on that list) trumps that film to no end. It's bad enough our Captain didn't even get a nomination, but this? Comeplete and total idiocy!

*takes some deep breaths*

Okay, I'm through ranting. I am capable of looking on the bright side of this. Summer won!!! Yipeee!!!
