Ok, I am a newbie so far as writing/posting anything. I LOVE everyone's insight and I know we are all of like mind when it comes to our love of Firefly/Serenity. Just wondering, is it just me? Or are River and Simon a little "too" close? Just wondering if anyone else feels the same! feels kinda creepy sometimes.......

Nope, your not the only one kitch. I noticed it the first time I saw it on air and I thought hmmmm, River and Simon seem a little bit closer than Kaylee and Simon, though we're treading on dangerous waters this has been discussed before (in fact put the War Stories commentary on and wait for the subtle joke Alan Tudyk makes. Very hi-larious.) I'm just glad to see I'm not alone in this. Welcome welcome, have some Mudders Milk.

But all seriousness aside, I think the only thing
better than regular incest would be Space Incest! (I do hope you're all laughing).
Anyhoo- for the record, until I saw the deleted
scene in which River wants to marry Simon, I didn't
see anything that made me think they were too
close. I mean, IIRC, they only hug *once* in the
entire series, plus the fact they are accustomed
to a life of relative leasure, thrust into
extraordinary, uncomfortable and dangerous circumstances, it's only natural they'd look to each other more than siblings would in ordinary life.
Unless I read a convincing example of 'too close' actions on their parts, I'll simply consider people to be 'projecting'.
(bwahaha)

The love between a brother and sister, especially ones so close in age, can rarely be quantified. Simon loves River more than he could ever love Kaylee, and it's nothing sexual or incestous. It comes from a blood bond that only siblings can understand.

The novelization makes the point that Simon and River were basically raised by a nanny and were ignored by their parents until they were old enough to be bragged on and shown off. If you really look at the Tam family sequences in "Safe" you can see this.

As a result Simon and River became very close, almost like twins. Although Simon is older and doesn't claim to be psychic, I do seem to think they have some sort of intuitive communication. The bond would have to be very strong for Simon to know that his sister was in deep trouble (besides the code)and persist in trying to rescue her despite the fierce opposition of both parents.
