Everybody who's seen the BDM knows that Simon uses a safeword to put River to sleep: "Eta kooram nah smech".

Most folks have, by now, learned that this is a Russian phrase.

Quite a few have probably discovered that its literal translation is "That's for chickens to laugh at."

But that's still a bit confusing. Is it just a nonsense phrase, or a well-known Russian expression? Is it a comeback, a put down, or a proverb? I've been trying to find out but without success -- until now.

In the Q&A session on the Australian DVD, Joss answers this very question. It's an idiom that means, simply, "That's absurd".

So now we know!
