OK, so we've all done the "Ocsars suck because they didn't nominate SERENITY" thread, although I'd like to point out once again that Barry Mendel, the guy who produced SERENITY, is up for a Best Picture Oscar alongside Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy for MUNICH. Hey, if we all can go crazy over Tim Minear, Jane Espenson, David Fury and Chris Buchanan, we might as well cheer on Barry Mendel.

So what other awards can we look forward to for SERENITY to win? Off the top of my head, there are the MTV Movie Awards (which may be hipper, but they keep awarding the same people over and over) and the Hugos, which are like the biggest legit sci-fi awards out there. So I'm predicting a Hugo sweep alongside STAR WARS EP 3.

Hey, what else are they gonna nominate? THE ISLAND? AEON FLUX??? DOOM????? Ugh. SERENITY will have little competition in that category.Aside from SERENITY, STAR WARS and to a lesser extent HITCHIKERS, this wasn't a very good year for sci-fi.

Do we really want to see that happen? People complained about the marketing being aimed at the "mtv audience" in the first place.

You see, but does the audience really matter to us? It's like the posts I've read about getting someone as powerful as Oprah behind Firefly and sharing it with the world like she does with her book club. And that got me to wondering "Would my Firefly experience change if all of a sudden, half the Browncoats were Oprah's demographic?" Finally I had to say no. It doesn't matter whether a portion of the fans are housewives or the MTV audience, just as long as they enjoy it. It's kind of hard to get new fans if you're so picky about what kind of people they are. I'm not criticizing any of the posters, it's just a thought. Sometimes to get your foot in the door, you need to use uncoventional tactics.

There's also the Spaceys, Canada's SF awards (presented by the Space network, our half-assed attempt at a Sci-Fi Channel).

They have no real budget, but they do genuinely love SF, and have demonstrated good taste in the past.

Plus they're the only awards show that's reliably entertaining --Joss and/or Nathan would fit right in.

It may help that Nathan and Jewel both come from the Great White North. Anywhere we can nominate them for the Spacys?

I would like to know this too.

And as far as MTV is concerned.... yea, whatever gets us publicity and converts. Lots of people love Firefly, look at the folks here, all ages and beliefs and backgrounds, and lots more people need to love Firefly/Serenity.

And I second the cheer for Barry Mendel and Universal. They did a good thing giving the movie a chance and they may be the ones to do the sequel. They get my support.

I saw on CNN today that Universal has the most Oscar nominations for movies of any studio. That can't hurt their pockets... maybe it'll make 'em more likely to give us a sequel. Chances are easier to give when you're flush!

I would imagine Serenity will win a few Saturn awards (which are for sci-fi, fantasy and horror genre), and possibly some Empire awards (conducted by Empire magazine in the UK), which are voted for by the public.

I think it might be handled internally, but
Space does have a website over at http://www.spacecast.com. And I see they even have a Firefly forum: http://forums.spacecast.com/forums/85/ShowForum.aspx
