Hey all

Well, the nominations for this years Oscars came out this morning, and to no one's surprise, SERENITY was completely shut out. But upon looking closer at the list, one can see a connection to SERENITY that almost makes up for the shut out.

Joss Whedon may have written and directed the movie. But the producer of the film (basically the guy that brought everyone that made SERENITY the movie it is together in one place) is Barry Mendel. Even though he's not as well known as say Jerry Bruckheimer, Joel Silver or Scott Rudin, he's produced some high quality (RUSHMORE, THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS) and big grossing (THE SIXTH SENSE, UNBREAKABLE) films.

And this morning, along with Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy, he got nominated for the Best Picture Oscar for co-producing MUNICH, another really powerful and great film.

So while it may not be SERENITY officially, it is a sort of nomination by default. So if there's one flick to cheer for at the Oscars, it's MUNICH, although I have to admit that I wouldn't mind seeing BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN win 8 for 8.

I dunno. Maybe if Joss had Jayne or Mal sodomize Simon, maybe it would increase the films chances for Best Picture. Wouldn have at least brought more publicity.

"Well I'm sure the Great Leader is just some sort of twisted ass freak."

"All right, I am now offically ignoring you, commence anal probing."

JW had his chance with the Companion School For Wayward Girls scene, but he chickened out and then cut the scene altogether. Morena and fifteen 'ambassadorial' wannabes in a daisy chain would have made Serenity the perfect companion piece for Broked*ck Mountain...

Maybe in a year or two it will be considered daringly outre to depict a male and a female, forsaking the cultural values of our society and -- gulp! -- having sex with each other. If the director is feeling particularly daring, they could even be depicted as liking each other.

America may not be ready for that image; but we must not turn our eyes away from this desperate splinter population of our nation: the heterosexuals. They've taken so much abuse lately that somebody must tell their story, regardless how much it revolts the sensibilities of mainstream Hollywood.

Cutting edge, I know; but we could always just keep reminding ourselves: "It's only a movie. It's only a movie. It's only..."

Cunningly,

P.S.
Gay movies are okay by me. I just ignore them. What pisses me off is when they become the cause celebre of every bubbleheaded critic, actor/ress and mogul in the biz. The gushing praise and delighted giggles... urg... bwuh...

Just for the record, I wasn't trying to be political or give offence. I was just making a joke about how some films have to have a specific aspect in it in order for them to be seriously considered for Best Picture.

I just wanted to point out that while SERENITY itself or Joss or any of the cast may not be up for any awards, at least one person involved with the pic is nominated for the biggest, most coveted award of them all, even if it's not for our film.

So this isn't an angry thread, but a "Woo hoo, someone from Joss's camp is up for a big ass award" thread.

Ahhh, I see another Kids in the Hall fan. Always nice to see. Maybe it would have helped Serenity's chances if Simon did a Buddy Cole monologue. Shutting up now.

If I'm a bitch, then life just got interesting.

still haven't seen Munich, but *have* seen Brokeback and it's a fine movie.

I do think the folks at Universal should be applauded for making the BDM and for their slate this year in general. Doom notwithstanding, they released some great pictures and seemed to take the most risks of the big studios. Paramount released almost *nothing. Warner Bros. stuck mainly to big tent pole stuff: Batman, Harry Potter.

Universal had Kong (the 3 hour blockbuster - yikes) - they put out "Jarhead" - and they have American Dreamz and Miami Vice coming out soon... I think their producers are producing some of the most daring mainsteam stuff right now...

so no wonder one's up for an oscar...

and hey, the main reason the BDM even got made was that the suits at Universal, especially Mary Parent apprently, were flans just like the rest of us...

oh, and they were probably eyeing Joss for a little 2007 tentpole called "Amazing Woman" or something...

god, what is the big deal with Brokeback Mountain?!?! all it is is some bland, seen-it-before "romance" film with two guys instead of a guy and girl. I'll probably be called a homophobe for this, but there are BETTER movies out there that deserve Best Picture more. Such as:

Serenity
Crash (Yes, it did get a nod)
Batman Begins
Capote (filmed in my home city of Winnipeg, MB too!!!)
Good Night, and Good Luck
Lord of War (amazing film)

Here's to Brokeback Mountain's demise!!!

"I aim to misbehave."
"Can't do something smart, do something right".

HOMER: "Oh Lisa, you and your stories; Bart is a vampire, beer kills brain cells. Now lets go back to that... building thingy... where our beds and T.V.... is".

...Except it's not some "bland, seen-it-before romance." Like, at all.
