VKATT

Hi I'm VKatt I am a first time poster and a long time 'Firefly' fan.

I have to write a argumentative or persuasive essay for school and I was thinking of doing one on 'Firefly'. Like why the show should still be on the air. Or maybe try to persuade someone who has never seen the show to watch it. Since I have a major case of writer's block I thought I'd ask the people that know the show the best what their thoughts were.

Thanks for your time.

The fact you are crazy too just adds to your charm.

For school essays i have been taught to split it into three differant sections. So I'll give you my Ideas for three sections;

Entertainment Value- The show contains much entertainment Value ranging from Character development to humor. Just write about what you enjoy about it

Moral value- Although not exactly like buffy where each episode has some underlying meaning. (Never going to forget the Impotency EPisode where Spike trys to bite Willow and fails, then they have the little talk on her bed) But it address things such as loyalty, personal beliefs acceptance of others.

Comparison to other shows (It's own uniqueness)- You can compaire it to the number of growing Formulae written sitcoms or Dramas to come out. And the mindless TV that is Reality shows which tend to be all the same with young adults all aiming for a prize and argueing with each other while performing tasks seen from other shows before it.

If I were writing a school Essay I would use those three points, to convince someone of why it should stay on the air or why they should watch it.

Oh and this is my First post here too.

Sometimes you own the libs. Sometimes, the libs own you.

Lol, my first post on here a few weeks back was my amazon customer review - practically an essay on why I love firefly.

Like in the post above, I categorised the things which make the show so special; humour, emotional intelligence, great characters, great premise etc.

Here's a link to the post:

I'm all for breaking things into three or four sub categories of one thesis. Lead in, Intro, Three big supporting paragraphs with transitions, and a Conclusion. All that good stuff. Definitely. An essay about why Firefly should still be on the air is an excellent topic. It's worth mentioning that its one of those shows that actually is funny when it wants to be. I mean actually funny.

You could write it about all the evidence in the show concerning any possible connection Book had with the alliance, and maybe whether or not he witheld any classified knowledge from the Serenity crew about River's situation at the academy. That's probably too much to handle for most prof's these days.

Yuck! Five parargraph essays! Plech! High School! Plech!
*deep breath to gather myself*
I think it's a great idea to write an argumentative essay on why Firefly should still be on the air/ why people should watch Firefly. Good idea and good luck.

Why do I love Firefly? Becasue it's just so darn cool. Any regular Joe Schmo can watch it and be genuinely entertained. Then there are others who can look at things Joss and Co. wrote and see a motive or a purpose. A good example of this is the ep "Objects in Space" and the BDM. I saw both the first time and was awed by the sheer entertainment value. Now, after multiple watchings and meditation, I can see the philisophical roots of both.

I love that no matter who you are you can connect with these characters because they're HUMAN, not more, not less. I like that 500 years in the future we'll still be human; we'll still have the same issues to deal with. I like that it's so easy to love Kaylee; that it's so easy to understand River's pain; that it's so easy to understand Mal's need to keep everyone close to him safe; that it's so easy to understand Simon's love for River; that it's so easy to belive Zoe and Wash's love; that it's so easy to understand Jayne's stupidity. I love the show because it was created with love and that transcends to me (that sounds hokey, I know, but how else to say it?).

Like Joss said "It's not about creating something that people like. It's never about that. It's only to create something that people love."

Hope this helps, but you're probably done with it anyway. It's always good to remember why, though.

Wacky fun!

Thanks so much to all of you that have replied so far! I actually haven't started the essay yet. I have decided to change the topic of my paper just slightly. It is now called 'Why we love Firefly so much'. I will try and write as if I'm trying to persuade someone else to watch the show. I will add more to 'this' post when I get to school, so I'll talk to you in a few hours.

Ok, it's 9:30AM and here I am sitting in the computer lab for essay writing.

My teacher says we cannot put our own opinions into the paper, we have to get the views of the experts. I thought about trying to wrote Joss Whedon but I honestly don't think I'd get a reply in time. So I'm asking the next best experts I know of... all of you out there.

So experts I am asking why you fell in love with this show and its characters? Why do we know it's the best show in all the 'Verse? Why should others that have never seen or heard of the show watch?

In the meantime I will be reading up on all the reviews and interviews I can get my hands on.

VKatt,
There's a great book edited by Jane Espenson called "Finding Serenity". It's filled w/ articles by different folk (authors, philosophers, actors, etc.) about Firefly. It would be great source for quotes and different views on the show (it was written pre-BDM). If you don't have time to check out the book, a net-search may reveal some excerpts. I like the idea of writing about something you care about w/ the added bonus of spreading word of the 'verse, good luck!
