I'd like to start a thread on promoting greater awareness of our wonderful phenomenon. There are millions of potential fans out there who have never heard of Firefly/Serenity. We need to reach out to these potential Browncoats. Here are some ideas I had for building upon what many of you have already done.

1. Publish our own fan-book containing fan-fiction, poetry, prose, pictures, art: as much of the things that the fans have done to promote the resurrection of Firefly/Serenity. We could sell it for a modest profit to fuel more awareness campaigns. This could become a blueprint for how to successfully promote "lost causes" and win, not just for Firefly/Serenity, but for many other worthy causes. It would quickly become a tangible testament to just how powerful our movement has become. Perhaps we could call it The Browncoat Chronicals. This could be sold at conventions, bookstores, and even online.

I am an accomplished desktop publisher, and there are many inexpensive venues where we can take digital media and have it printed and bound at cost. We'd need an editorial staff of about 10-15 volunteers and an operating budget of about $1,000.00 to get the ball rolling. Then we'd have to sift through a lot of content and probably generate some more.

2. Fans at this website raised money to get a copy of Serenity and Firefly to every U.S. Naval ship in the fleet. There are a lot of Army, Airforce, and Marine bases that we could also target for distribution (if bought through Amazon, this will continue to boost sales figures). We may also try to send some "care packages" containing the DVDs to forward deployed troops, the rear-areas more than likely have some means recreational facilities that they can watch movies and T.V. on.

As a veteran, I would be glad to make contact with the appropriate ombudsmen and military personnel. I'm also a member of the American Legion and VFW, so I might be able to tap them for help in distribution.

3. Raise money for the purposes of raising awareness of Firefly/Serenity. The money can be channeled to maintaining the fan booths at major Sci-Fi conventions, the taking out of ads in sci-fi and alternative publications, and exploring other ways of increasing our Web presence.

4. Promote Firefly/Serenity fan fiction more openly: award prizes for the stories voted best each month, quarter, and year, by participants (I'd be willing to bet we could get Joss to throw in some autographed pics of the cast free of charge). Other prizes could include the companion to the series, the book Jewel helped write, etc.

Share your ideas on how we can promote greater awareness of Firefly/Serenity

I quite like the idea that this website does to promote the works of Joss Whedon.

http://www.whedonverse.org/

They donate Firefly and Serenity DVDs (as well as Buffy and Angel ones too) to public libraries and charities.

I'd love to have a firefly fans parade.
Decide on a venue months ahead of time, organize an agenda and then parade through the city. WHEEEEEEEE.

Seriously though, this thread is a good idea and I hope more people post their ideas. Here are some of mine (or good ones I've already heard of)

1. A couple of weeks ago somebody suggested burning the Serenity trailer and the River Tam Sessions onto CDs and leaving them all over the place with (can't stop the signal written on them)

2. Have a mass browncoats gathering and see if we can get into the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest gathering of people wearing brown coats ever.

3. Pick one of the casts movies (slither, waitress, wonderwoman) and stage a mass viewing.

I could go on and on

I was involved with the Highlander fanfic newsletter many years ago - it was a great project but didn't bring in too many fans. Still, you can count me in for editorial/publishing help with such a project.

What other Guinness records exist that we can break?
Largest Knitting Circle - all making Jayne hats? Just a thought.

Anything to get us into the news and heard of, I think. (Except going pants-less on the subway- I heard that got people in trouble!)

I like the parade idea. We could all break out with the "Jayne Cobb, Hero of Canton" song That'd draw some attention.

And I don't know, but those plastic/ rubber wristbands...if they are still as popular as I think they are.... I'd sport a Big Damn Heroes one and when you buy one you get a pamphlet like thing that tells you about the cast and crew and a little bit about the show

"Oh no what could it be? We're all going to die. Who's flying this thing? Oh right, that would be me, back to work"

Organize a charity benefit showing of Serenity on the big screen at some point during 2006 -- possibly on the same day as other benefits across the country.

See

for the premise.
