Okay this thread is kind of random but who cares. I think of all the guest stars Nandi was the best I just love her, you really believe everything she says, I really love when she says this "(something in chinese and then immediatly switch to english) I've wanted to kiss you since I showed you my guns" or something like that. Also at the very end the singin :( makes me stop for a minute to just listen, Anyway what about you?

If someone tries to kill you. . . You try and Kill em' right back!

Let's just say it takes a special woman to get Mal's attention. Some would argue that she is better suited for him than Inara. *gasp!*

She was awesome in that role.

America loves a winner!

Another of Joss's true gifts, the ability to create and recruit the right folks for the guest spot. And of couse, like a truly great Joss characters, she has to die after only 1 episode.

Nandi was excellent. However, my ranking of guest stars would put both Saffron and Niska higher, and maybe Badger too.

But it's just a matter of personal preference, and dang it's hard to choose.

I don't disagree on any particular point.

Joss has a real gift for creating characters. I agree on it being hard to choose the best! Saffron is a hit with me too, and I really loved Tracey as a character.

I would have loved to have seen characters like these recurring during the show, had Fox execs not been a pack of [Chinese expletive]. Does anyone remember Anne from the Buffy/Angel series? She started off as a silly kid obsessed with Vampires in Buffy, then showed up later in LA (still on Buffy) as a homeless girl now obsessed with her boyfriend. Later she showed up on Angel running a homeless shelter, and appeared in several episodes - including a short scene in the season finale. She gradually changed from a clueless kid to a self assured and selfless adult over the years, and yet her total screen time probably wouldn't fill five episodes. It's the little things like that that made me fall in love with Buffy and Angel.

I'm never good at ranking, certainly not at saying, "best," but I agree Nandi was great, though I think the most powerful moment in the episode, and show of her character, was after she was dead.

When Inara looks up from Nandi's dead body with a look of, "Kill the bastard," in her eyes, and Mal goes off to do it. The best show of a person is often the effect they have no others, and whoever played Nandi really made you believe that she could mean that much to people, in spite of being away from Inara and only knowing Mal for a little bit.

I agree I also love her speech she gave to Mal when he suggested they ran, Sometimes I feel she is more right for him than Inara, but then I watch Serenity and I go back lol

Mal: He'll kill you, kill every last one of them if it comes to that and he he'll sleep well that night.
Nandi: Rance Burgess is just a man, and I wont let any man take what's mine. I doubt you'de do differently in my position.
Mal: well lady. . .You're my kind of stupid

No, you're wrong about going back. She is more right, she's perfect for Mal, but even if she lived that might have kept them appart, Mal's only home is Serenity, her's was the Heart of Gold.

Also, just becasue she is more right doesn't mean Inara isn't right enough, people seldom get perfection.

To be honest I am glad she died. . .in a way, The fact we saw her end, adds to her character. You saw what you saw and that was her, every great story has to end somewhere, unfortunatly hers was at a fast pace. Her death I think made Inara and Mal bond a little better, just from that scene when she died as someone mentioned earlier.

Mal: He'll kill you, kill every last one of them if it comes to that and he he'll sleep well that night.
Nandi: Rance Burgess is just a man, and I wont let any man take what's mine. I doubt you'de do differently in my position.

I think Nandi was perfect for Mal, too perfect. People don't need people who are just like m, they need people who are their opposite side. Anara is Mals opposite, his other half. He's against the allaince from the start, Anara is a proud citizen of the allaince. Mal's against her career, she's of course for it. She has emotions she shows more, while Mals all bottled up. She believes, and knows she believes, while Mal pretend he doesn't. So Anara's lack of perfection makes her better for Mal, though I think Nandi understands both Mal and anara better then either of them do. Her most important rule in the episode is to make Anara realize she loves Mal, which she does wonderfully. I think thats the first time Anara sees what everyone else has seen the whole time, and thats why she cries.

She finally realizes why Mal thinks her job is bad, and she realizes that by the man she loves sleeping with another woman.

Damn great show. No matter what the Gon-shi at Fox think.

If you play Nationstates.net check out the region Firefly.

Not that Joss doesn't deserve all the praise that's heaped on him, but writer Brett Matthews wrote Heart of Gold and deserves his share of the credit. Nandi is, most likely, largely his creation.

y'know i really liked nandi as a character and was disappointed that she died so soon before we could have some more delicious love-triangle-ish situations but i wasn't all that impressed with melinda clarke... i know i'm in the minority here but i found her really uneven - she had some really great moments, don't get me wrong, but i think that first scene with her is kind of... um... not very good - she has a kind of weird put-on accent which is later dropped... i dunno... actress-wise she didn't do it for me, but i thought the character was *very* interesting - expecially because of the similiarities and differences from Inara and how that would play out in Mal's heart. i did like how well suited she was to Mal and really would have liked to have seen her character pop up every once in a while - especially since Mal gives Inara such a hard time about her job, but then doesn't say a word to Nandi who actually *is* a whore about hers - i would have loved to hear Inara call him on that somewhere down the line :).

I'm a saffron girl all the way *g* - I thought C.H. was fantastic in both her appearances and I bet she would have eventually become even more a part of things (like Spike in Buffy) - that whole different side of the same coin is really interesting to me - and that's kind of what saffy is to mal - she's the him he would be if he was a loner and had absolutely no morals *g*
