... HELP!

I'm new to the whole community fandom thing, but been a fan of Buffy/Angel and Firefly for a long time.

However, in August-September I'm planning to visit the US, Canada, and the UK (I'm from the Land Down Under - Australia, for those who were wondering) and was wondering about a Convention... as for example the MR convention (not yet familiar enough with the concept to use the abbreviation) mentioned in the news. (VERY cross with life that I was in the middle of the jungle in another country when Mr Whedon came to visit Oz.)

So - what are they about? Should I go? If so, why? If not, why not? Can I go? Are there several options? Are there people out there who are professional scifi/fantasy convention-holders?

Cheers,
Minime

Hi and welcome. Yeah, go to the conventions if you have a chance!

Here's a few sites to get you started:

UK:
www.starfury.co.uk (Serenity3/4)

USA:
www.boosterevents.com/ (Flanvention)
www.dragoncon.org/ (Dragon*Con)

Serenity is all FireFly as is Flanvention.

Dragon*con is general sci-fi/comic books I think.

Just lots of people, guests from the shows, and fun. There was some great parties for Serenity2...

Those conventions are very expensive though as far as I know.

Serenity2 (I assume that's what made no sense) was 2005's Starfury convention. I'll definatly be at Serenity3, and wondering if I can get the money together for Dragon*Con...

No, no, sorry, it was my last sentence which mde no sense. Sorry for the misunderstanding, I was in a public library and my time had come to an end and I was getting nasty looks from the librarians.

I had a quick look at the options, and Serenity 3 might be my best bet - might see you there? What goes on there? Will I love it? (That's kind of a rhetorical questions)

Thanks for the info.

P.S.
If I had to pick between DragonCon and Serenity 3, what should I pick?

Well, having never been to Dragon*Con I don't really know, I'm planning on going for the first time this year, just need the money for the plane ticket...

I'll be at S3 to, and if S2 is anything to go by they're pretty good. There's autograph signings, you can get your picture taken with the guests, parties, talks by the guests, and a cocktail party with the guests for the select few, though as I just found out the tickets for that have already sold our, which is mildly upsetting.

The Serenity Cons are good fun and you can't go wrong, but it's down to what you want, Dragon*Con is about a lot of different Sci-Fi and Comics I think, where as Serenity is just about Firefly. You'll get more Firefly Guests at Serenity, but it'll probably cost more.

America loves a winner!

No shame for asking here, Minime. Hope we can help ya out.

Been to DragonCon 2x's and it's HUGE! As per the link above, it involves everything from movies, tv shows, gaming, comics, books,...pretty much anything and everything even remotely related to SciFi/Fantasy. It can get a bit overwhelming,( it lasts for 4 days ) but it's definatly something to behold.

I'd love to check out a Flan, myself, but I've not had the opportunity to do yet.

Either way, ya can't go wrong.

Hmmm... much to think about. Much money to earn. If I wanted to be completely insane and very very rich I could probably manage both DragonCon and Serenity3...
Thanks for the info. Might see you there1!
