I am new to this whole serenity/firefly thing, and am really mystified as to how all of these conventions are organized/planned, and how people find out about them. It seems they all have different names and are put together by various organizations... what's the scoop?

Unfortunately I'm not sure either how they are done. But I at least wanted to welcome you aboard the ship! Nice to have new recruits!

Well as for finding out about them, this site is a good place too start.

Where do you live, no specifics necessary, just a part of the World.

In the UK we have Starfurys Serenity cons ( www.starfury.co.uk).

In the US there's the Flanvention ( www.boosterevents.com/) and Dragon*con ( www.dragoncon.org/).

Hope that helps.

Thanks! It does help.
Right now I am living in Western Canada. I am by no means a millionaire, so I guess I will have to wait for something to come a little closer - maybe california?

Boosterevents has just announced plans for Flanvention II, but it's not until December. It's held in Los Angeles (well, Burbank actually). I can tell you that Flanvention I was a very shiny time.

I don't disagree on any particular point.

In my experience there are two kinds of conventions:

Gaming & comic book conventions: which have tens of thousands of people there, you stand in incredibly long lines to wait for everything, but there are a lot of things going on and the whole scene is a hoot (and these are very cheap to attend, usually like $30/day)

fan conventions: these are much smaller, normally only 600-800 people attending, shorter lines, more chance to see and even talk to the 'celebrity guests', and often include a concert, costume competition, and other fun events. However these are much more expensive (usually in the ball park of $300-$1,000 for the weekend)

oh, neither include housing, which is an extra expense.

Sean Henry does a great job with his Starfury events, which are in the UK. He isn't mentioned in the link below, where they are wanking on US fan conventions (just scroll down to see who is running what):

oh and welcome!
fff is the greatest site ever.

well these things seem to be in big cities... probably related to walk up business and cheaper convention kind of hotels, which can accomodate the crowd...

but if there is not one near you (midwest- or anywhere else....)

MAYBE you all could band together and start one. Not easy and probably not cheap.. but these others started somewhere...so... maybe

we've done the impossible before..
