Alright, was watching the Serenity DVD and noticed this. Then went looking for screen caps like mad and started comparing things so after all that hard work it'd be awful nice if someone would tell me what they think:

When Kaylee is giving Simon the whole "Don't do this, don't fly in this" speech as everyone is getting off the ship and he and River are planning on leaving, she puts a jacket on River. Here's a picture:

Does it or does it not look an awful lot like this jacket that Kaylee wears in the pilot:

I mean it looks a bit darker, but the bar is dark and that could account for that. And even if it is a different jacket (which after comparing the two a bit more, I'm thinking it is) could it have been meant to be the same one? AND even if it isn't the same one, might it still be one of Kaylee's that she's just giving to River?

This is all very silly. But it's just a cute thought to me that Kaylee would give River her jacket as something to remember her by or a going away gift. It makes me smile a whole bunch.

What do you think? And am I completely mad for going to such silly lengths to find out if it's the same jacket?

Pictures come from here: http://www.wornoutfaces.org/amy/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=4

with much thanks to whoever capped the movie.

You're not mad at all, but I think that it may have been more of a motherly fashion that she was given the jacket. Sort of a "You'll get cold out there without this."

Those jackets are two completely different lengths.

Hi!

Been a hobby costumer for a long, long time, and did a tour of employment under a custom interior designer specializing in fabric applications--so I'm a pathetic fabric nerd very excited to see this thread!

It's my take from the pictures that the fabrics in each jacket are very different--the light touches/reflects from them very differently. River's looks like a PVC or other 'high gloss' finish--it's very, very shiny, pardon the pun . Kaylee's looks more like a silk-finish print or brocade with a far more matte finish to it.

In the two examples, as well, it looks to me that they hang and fold differently. Certainly part of that could be the body/posture differences in wearers, and any alterations to the garment itself. But even so, fabrics of different weave/weight/material have different draping properties, and that's what this looks like to me. A denim skirt and a chiffon skirt cut exactly the same will always hang differently, no matter who wears them at any given moment--and the two jackets seem to hang and drape differently, to me.

To me, they look like two different garments that bear a close resemblance to each other. Just my opinion--your mileage may vary, totally. And I might be outright wrong.

Thanks for the cool thread subject. I love this place!!!

They do look similar; however that couldn't be the same. As some said earlier the jacket is shorter on Kaylee than River. And in real-life Summer Glau is about 5'8" and Jewell Staite is I think 5'5" so the jacket would actually look shorter on River than Kaylee
