So, I think this is the rehashing of an idea that was executed a couple of years ago by dedicated Browncoats.

With the DVD release of Serenity, and the growing grosses - however fast or slow - probably making Universal pay a little more attention to the concept of a sequel, how can we draw more attention to it?

My suggestion is to take out a full-page ad in the biggest newspaper in the United States - as I believe Browncoats pushing for the movie to be made did long ago.

The ad would revolve around the idea of the sequel getting made. It would draw attention to the DVD success of Serenity thus far, as well as Firefly shooting back up the charts.

We could also have a small section devoted to the newest accolades, such as the BBC #1 Film of 2005.

Essentially, the idea would be to get the execs to continue paying attention, but also get those countless subscribers to the NY Times to check out either the movie or the series, too.

This is just the beginning idea. There's a link on E-How.com:

http://www.ehow.com/how_110735_full-page-ad.html

Not sure what pricing would be. But I promise I'd put some money into the cause, as well as organization. We could also advertise this site as the place the idea started!

Just wondered if anyone else would be willing/interested in pursuing this. If so, we'll put it on the fast track.

Let me know what you guys think.

I'll donate to the cause any way I can. I personally think the idea would draw a few more people to the show. I do however wish that it had come about earlier (a marathon on sci-fi is coming up and perhaps the advertisement would spur people to watch the show and get hooked a bit late though.) But yeah I'm on board. Daniel_Fyre@yahoo.com let me know if it gets any steam behind it.

Ain't that just shiny?

The Firefox internet browser (double page?) advert was 250.000 US Dollar. Well, this is what they paid for it.

i'd rather see the add calling for a renewal of the series than another sequel.

sequel = 2~ hours of space cowboy goodness
another season = 22~ hours

I'd love to do a two-pager if we could figure out a way to afford it. But I think that 250 figure seems awfully low.

What do you guys think of this? It's very preliminary... after we figure out the text/concept I could do a mock-up:

" Have you seen
[Serenity logo]?

[large] Countless dedicated fans have.

[medium] Now we want a sequel - and you can help make it happen. Get Universal Studios to pay attention!

[small] Browncoats, the tireless supporters of the Firefly/Serenity universe, have already helped creator Joss Whedon do the impossible: they have turned a television show - canceled in one season - into a phenomenon.

Serenity, the feature film continuation, was released in September 2005 to numerous accolades. Since its DVD release on September 20, Serenity:

- Was named BBC's #1 film of the year
- Has held the #1 DVD spot on Amazon.com
- Has spurred the Firefly series back to the top of the DVD charts, after two years of release
- Has reached enormous numbers of new fans

[large] Now we just need you.

[Fireflyfans.net logo]"

This is VERY preliminary. Everyone's input and criticism is extremely important - this will represent us, if we get it done. Let your opinions be known. Any additions/suggestions/deletions are much appreciated! Thanks!

As far as series renewal goes, Joss has explicitedly stated that Firefly will not return as a series, so we're shooting for the sequel, and for people to pay attention.

Oh, if only we could get another 22 hours...

Not to be a stick in the mud, but ads like that really aren't going to work. You should take the money you collect for the ad and put it towards buying Firefly or Serenity DVDs. That's what the suits want to see, dollars not ads.

And as for a TV show, they sell based on their project advertising blocs. You want to target your favorite beer, chip or soda company who might advertise on such a show and urge them to buy time on such a program.

the closest i've seen of something like that is him saying that he would not trust FOX with the series again.

i've also seen him say that he would jump at the chance of starting the series again, but that he wasn't going to hold his breath waiting for it to happen.

First:

Maybe we need to look at simply saying
"THANK YOU UNIVERSAL for making Serenity" rather than making demands...

Similar to the idea of the original ad you mentioned above.

The simple idea that enough fans contributed enough money to buy the ad space to THANK the studio would be noticed. We might even get free additional mention blerbs on various nightly news programs if this could be pulled off successfully.

This would be a good thing for Universal as it is esentialy free good press for them while at the same time hopefully making more of the general public aware that Firefly and Serenity even exist. More DVD sales of FF and BDH from this would definately help lead to achieveing the goal of more FF in one form or another at the very least.

I would maybe mention Firefly as the original TV show that Serenity was based off of and leave it at that. Don't say anything negative about FOX. Just mention it was a show and that fans were very dissapointed when it was canceled. Maybe throw in a hint about the appreciation that would be felt towords any network that could revive the show.

Second:

A full page in the New York Times is... Shall we say... Um... Expensive.

http://nytmarketing.com/mediakit/n_rates.html

Grab the "Arts & Entertainment" add rates pdf file from the link above.

A full page ad = 126 column inches. A standard movie ad is listed at $927 per column inch for an initail ad placement nationwide on Sunday and $795 nationwide on a weekday. $116,802 verses $100,170

I'd assume it would be less than that though because we're not advertising to generate any revinue in return. This would need to be worked out with someone in the NYT Ad space sales department to get a final quote.

NOTE: color adds $27-35k depending on when the add runs (weekday nyc - Sunday nationwide distribution)

A New York Times Magazine ad looks like a flat rate of approximately $100k for a 4 color page and $70k for a black and white page.

---

If this could somehow be pulled off with style and good taste... WOW!

Pretty expensive for the ad, I think, but I think anything we can do to draw attention to the DVDs would be a good thing.
