From the series, for me it was in Out of Gas when Mal says to Inara "Everybody dies alone." Man did he deliver that line! It get's me every time.

From the BDM, River's conversation with Simon while she's chained up on Serenity. She has just gone from kicking everyone's ass in that bar and here she shows that she really is just a young girl. Especially when she says (in response to Simon saying that something triggered this memory in her) "It isn't mine. The memory, it isn't mine and I shouldn't have to carry it." I just think Summer did the most tremendous job there.

I know I've already posted my favorite scenes from the series and from the BDM, but I was up the other night thinking about it--I know I'm kind of pathetic--and I recognized the point in the movie where my confusion turned into interest.
Right after Mal talks to the Operative from Haven, he walks out and starts giving orders to his crew. He says:
Mal: There are many fine ways to die, and I aint' waitin' for the Alliance to choose mine.
He shoots the guy in the ship
I mean to confound these bungers. If I hear a word from any of you that ain't helpin' me out or taking your leave I will shoot you down.
I remember thinking,"gee, this guy really means business!" From then on I was in love. (I mean with the 'verse.) Haven't fallen out of it yet, and don't plan to.

Wacky fun!

I would have to go with an earlier notion and say my favorite line out of all of 'em is when Mal wakes up in Out Of Gas and looks at the crew and says "yall gonna be here when I wake up?" For sure thats my favorite line. Call me a sap but i love that line.

"We have done the impossible that makes us mighty" Mal

I think this is one of the less recognized scenes, but i love the way Itflows, the not paying attention to Jayne( my fav character)

MAL In her room., which I'm thinking we
bolt from the outside from now on.

WASH That's a little extreme, isn't it?

JAYNE Anybody remember her coming at me
with a butcher's knife?

WASH (remembering fondly) Wacky fun...

JAYNE You wanna go, little man?

WASH Only if it's someplace with
candlelight.

ZOE Sir, I know she's unpredictable. But
I don't think she'd harm anyone.

JAYNE ("Hellooo...")
Butcher's knife...

ZOE Anyone we can t spare. I mean, far
as we know, the girl's never even
picked up a gun before.

That was a great conversation. Another good one was in Out Of Gas when they flashback to Wash checking out the console when Zoe and Mal are talking,

Mal: great aint he

Zoe: I dont like him

Mal: what

Zoe: Just sumpin about hime bothers me

etc. that exchange is great considering they end up gettin married

I LOVE the torture scene in War Stories. The way it goes from silliness to serious in 2 seconds flat.

The "Wash... Wash, LISTEN TO ME!" gets me still after, i'm going with hundreds of viewings

Every episode is loaded with gems -- that's the brilliance of the series. For me it's the moment in "War Stories" when Wash has just been released from torture and he says (about Mal) "He's crazy!" (paraphrasing, he might say "insane"). And what he means is that Mal did everything he could to distract Wash from the torture, even if it meant getting him riled up about Zoe. To me, it's cool that Wash realizes that's what Mal was doing, and it reinforces some of Mal's seemingly "hard-assed" behavior in the previous "Out of Gas" episode where he basically threw Wash out of the sick bay while Zoe was on the table. Mal is better (and more focused) under pressure than any character I've seen. This notion is re-visited in the movie when he orders the crew to disguise Serenity as a reaver ship. (By the way, if you haven't seen the DVD yet, there's a brilliant goof of this scene in the outtakes).
I think this aspect of Mal is evident to most of us in the audience, but Wash's exclamation (part shock, part admiration) that the captain is "crazy" is a great moment of realization for that character.
I also love the scene in the pilot when Mal interrupts the stand-off in the cargo bay by walking on board and shooting the Alliance agent. That really set the tone of the show for me.

"I don't think of myself as a lion. You might as well, though. I have a mighty roar."

The scene in OOG:

"Shephard Book, Kaylee, Jayne will ride with Inara in her shuttle. Doc, you and your sis ride with Wash and Zoe, seeing as Zoe still needs some doctoring"

"What about you?"

"Four people per shuttle. That's the arrangement. Evens the odds. I'm staying with Serenity."

I love so many of the scenes all ready mentioned. The one that no one has, that stands out is that flashback to the war.

Zoe has just gotten done telling the green soldier that the way to succeed in combat is to stay quiet and become completely invisible. Then Mal busts in screaming his guts out and blasting away with everything he's got. She then says: Some people go a different way."

It is, indeed, incredibly hard to pick just one moment...

However, I can pick one from the film... while I do like the "my turn" line and the glorious shot of River backlit after the fight with the Reavers, I'd have to say my favorite moment from the movie is when Simon has just basically told Kaylee he's in love with her, she asks "You mean, like sex?" (adorable, very Joss-like way of undercutting the emotion, and just plain... well, adorable!) and he says "I guess I mean", (notice! Not stuffy grammar! He's changed from the *original* Serenity, hasn't he? ;) ) and then the funniest line EVER: "The hell with this, I'm gonna live!" It's Jewel's delivery - that sudden look of ADORABLE determination, the cocking of the gun - that makes it so utterly fantastic. I know, I wanted to pick something no one else had, but that one's, plain and simple, one of the damn funniest things I've ever SEEN. My dad and I were quoting that line like crazy at each other after we went to see the movie in the theater...

From the TV series, I like the part in I believe it's "Safe", where River is watching the dancers and then ends up joining them. It's the first time I can recall seeing her truly smile and be happy, and she's so pretty when she smiles! She's just having such a damn good time, which is such a change for her. God knows how far from home; experimented on cruelly by the government; with only her brother probably REALLY trusting her much; schizophrenic... but there, in that ONE MOMENT, she is truly happy, and life is worth living and loving.

Other "close seconds":

From Serenity:
MAL:"You wanna run this ship!?"
JAYNE: "Yes!"
MAL: *startled pause* "Well... you can't!"

RIVER: Time to go to sleep...
SIMON: "No, meimei... it's time to wake up." (Which episode was this, Ariel? I can't remember, but I saw it during the Friday SciFi marathon in the afternoon, I know that much)

Several from War Stories:

The scene where Zoe simply does not hestitate to choose Wash and says something like "You want me to choose, right? I'm sorry, do want to finish?"

The Shepard Book line about how (paraphrasing here) "I don't think you've shot anyone yet." line in response to Simon's "I don't know. I've never shot a man before..." is hilarious...

... as is the "No, it's really not!" after Zoe tells Jayne(?) something along the lines of "It's his fight, he needs to finish it". Her surprised "Oh.", and the three pulling out their guns simultaneously and shooting the guy... lovely.

And of course... the ENTIRE "Hero of Canton" song in the bar, from "Jaynestown". Just... hee! Just thinking about it makes me smile! "The he-ro of Caaanton... the man called Jayne!" *giggle* Though the scene where they first discover the "eerie-ass" statue is hysterical, too (that and War Stories are definitely my favorite episodes, I'd say. Though come to think of it, it's pretty hard to pick just one favorite episode, even! Heh).

Oh, and another "close second" from Serenity: the final "What was that?" line. This beautiful, moving ending... and then Joss undercuts it with the same line from the beginning that in and of itself was funny... it just brings such a smile to my face! <--- See? It lets us know that even though we've lost a few people, life will go on for the Serenity crew (which is also why I like the line from Zoe about "She'll keep flying." at the end. Less funny than "What was that?", but so very poignant).

...

But yes, I think "The hell with this, I'm gonna LIVE!" is still my top fave, especially from the movie.

Let me tell you what son. This question is easy. Jayne is my absoulate favorite character. Though I am unsure what it is about him, he always brings the smile to my face. Whether it be the ridiculous Mother-Made toque,The waking up and having to move the gun from between him and his whore, turning on everyone and then learning his morals only to turn on them again... at the right price, or even the highlight of the Television series, when Mal walks into Jayne in the hall and the Mal is given this menacing view of Jayne with this hilariously large weapon.... Verra.

My favourite moment would be from "Ariel" when Jayne is locked outside the ship, convinced that he is going to die and asks Mal what he going to tell the rest of the crew. Jayne's sad and final "Make somethin' up. Don't tell 'em what I done." brings a little tear to my eye every time.

I tend to agree that Jayne has hidden depths, if not the intellecutal capacity to back them up. In an alternate universe, where Firefly ran as long as Friends, Jayne would be my vote for the spin-off show. Although, I would hope that he would fare a little better then Joey.

Out of favorite characters i would have to go with Mal. Yes his probably one of the most chosen other than of course Kaylee, but it's the way he leads that I love. He is the anti-her hero. You take everything that your typical hero would so or say, flip them upside-down, and you got Mal. Perfect example is in Serenity (movie) when Mal is going to go rescue Inara and he turns to Zoe and says (probably not exact quote) "If anything happens, if i dont contact you, you take this ship, and you come rescue me." It's exactly something you would expect Mal to say. I just have to love that hes som much more human than most of the typical heroes out there.

Although in OoG if someone would have gut-shot me and tried to steal my ship, i htink i would have had to "Riddle him full'o holes" but thats just me I've never been big on the whole turn-the-other-cheek thing.

There's an interesting and revealing error in your transcription. I made the same mistake on my first viewing, before I read the script in the Visual Companion.

What River actually says is: "They should be... what I'll show them... Oh God..."

In fact, she's referring to the Miranda secret, the awful thing she knows and they don't. By that point she's become aware (at some level) that it's about to come out, that she's going to lead the crew to the horrible truth.

What she's NOT saying is "I'll show them"... that is, prove them wrong about something.

Summer gives a great performance in that scene, but that single word is a bit garbled. It's easy to hear it as "but" instead of "what". As I said, I did so myself. Even the subtitles on the DVD get it wrong! But if you think about it, the line as written in the script makes much more sense, since River is hardly in any position to "show them" anything -- other than the truth about Miranda.

I hope you agree that the scene is even better and more powerful when you recognize that line for what it is.

I don't disagree on any particular point.

I know this has been mentioned already, but I have to give my two cents. After waiting sooooo long to see the ship again, I would have to say my favorite scene from the BDM is the first time we see the ship. We get the movie title, complete blackness and quiet, then stirring music and that beautiful ship. It makes my heart race and I break into a big smile every time (knowing full well that we will soon get to see all of our characters).

As far as the series goes, I love so much of the dialogue that I cannot choose only one scene, so instead I will go with the two images that were so unexpected that they brought me out of my chair. In Train Job when Mal kicks "Krog" into the engine, and when Mal stabs Ath twice. Mal's sense of justice is such a great mix of practicality and a warped sense of ethics.

Yes, it's from Ariel. It's easy to remember if you realize that Simon has finally learned enough about River's brain injuries (in the hospital on Ariel) to design an effective treatment. Or, at least, so he thinks -- later we learn that he's still not very successful.

Another giveaway is River's line, which echoes Simon's as he injects her (earlier in the episode) with the death-simulating drug.

if intros count, the quote in my sig.

otherwise, in the pilot (2nd half) when simply walks into the ship and shoots Dobson. for me, that tops that scene in indiana jones when, after a swordsman shows off his moves, Indie draws his gun and shoots him.
