I got the complete series + Serenity for Christmas, and I blew through them in near no time at all, and I absolutely loved them. Anyway, I looked for a great fan site, and this seems like it's just that. I have a question though: What's this whole Blue Sun thing? I don't remember seeing anything related to that in the series or movie. Thanks.

In the commentaries, we hear about the Blue Sun group. In the series' and even the movie, there are ads EVERYWHERE for Blue Sun. Joss described it as "Coca-Cola, Microsoft, and other big companies all in one". It puts out a lot of products.

We never saw all of it, but it could have turned into a big storyline. We suspect it has something to do with the blue hands people...

Thanks. I'm going to have to rewatch the series now, which I planned to do anyway, and partake in the commentaries this time around.

You'll see ads in the background and even the foreground all the time now that you know to look. Also when River is tearing the labels off of cans of food those are Blue Sun labels.

Also, look for the BlueSun logo on all sorts of things. The crybaby in the pilot episode, and on Jayne's shirt, when River takes a knife to him and says " he looks better in red "

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

you might particularly note,
at the beginning of 'Ariel' when River slashes that knife at Jayne...
she cuts just deep enough to ruin his Blue Sun shirt
(they kind of shoot the scene so you hardly even notice that that is what he is wearing),
and she says 'he looks better in red'

it has been speculated that the Blue Sun corporation might have been behind the experiments done on River

and when she tore lables off of cans it might have been to remove the Blue Sun logo...

but Joss never got a chance to develop this particular plot thread
(I'm still hoping for it in the sequel, as well as Book's backstory, and Inara's reasons for heading out to the rim, and and and)

And on the posters/ads everywhere. In the movie, it's on the bottle of drink of some sort that Jayne drinks out of then passes to Simon.

Don't ya just love how Jayne is always touching, grabing , holding, somethin in EVERY scene? As for the BlueSun bottle, I gotta think that it's some sort of liquor, after what they had just seen. ( Not that Jayne would need an excuse )

There's also some good stuff in the RPG Book (yes, dammit, I'm a geek) about Blue Sun - to be fair, I don't know how much of it came directly from the show's unrevealed backstory (although there is a planetary history that includes elements of Dead or Alive, so I'll take it as canon until something on screen comes along).

Anyway: Blue Sun holds "the monopoly on packaged foodstuffs" and "engages in deadly corporate espionage and then calls in favors from powerful government officials to cover their tracks" (202). Of product quality: "While not the best on the market, Blue Sun products are the most reliable. If you buy Blue Sun, you always know what you're going to get. There are never any surprises - good, bad, or otherwise" (202) which pretty much sums up and mass produced corporate product that characterizes the American market these days.

It's also interesting to note that Blue Sun has recently built a new coroporate complex on Osiris (the Tam's home-planet) after moving from Sihnon though they apparently have outposts all over the 'Verse.

*cough* Sorry, I like books and history too much.

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move. - Douglas Adams

WARNING: Spoilers for the Serenity comic book/graphic novel ahead.

We don't know for sure that the blue hand guys and Blue Sun have any connection. As far as I can see it's fan supposition based on

1) They both have something to do with "Blue"
2) River's bad reaction to the logo.

Some points worth making.

1) In the comic (which Joss wrote, says is canon and explains the period between "Firefly" and the BDM) the representative of Parliament that gives the Operative his instructions calls the blue hand guys "Independent Contractors" which suggests they were working for the Parliament.

2) River escapes from an Alliance Lab, there are no indications of Blue Sun's involvement with the lab at any level.

3) River has been shown off to a number of high ranking officials. Who knows what else she might know besides Miranda.

This is my take on it. We as fans only saw 15 episodes of a series Joss probably hoped would run 7 seasons. The man likes to foreshadow.

The standard fan assumption is that all of River's odd behavior relates to one story arc --- someone mysterious messed with River, River dislikes Blue Sun therefore Blue Sun messed with River. Some guys in blue gloves are after River, we know they work with the Alliance but are not Alliance. Therefore since we already "proved" that Blue Sun are behind what happened to River these must be Blue Sun guys.

I suspect that we are lumping together foreshadowing for more than one River thread. If I had to guess I would say.

1) The Alliance messed with River in a super secret Alliance lab. When she escaped they contracted the blue hand guys to find her. I would argue that we don't know who they are, yes they could be Blue Sun, but they could just as equally be Wolfram and Hart for all we know. In the comics we see that underneath the suits they are blue -- either a tight fitting body suit or an artificial body (remember Tracy?) I'm guessing that they were selected because they had the best chance of success against River. I further guess they are actually the Pinkerton's in this Western. Private security of some kind.

2) Blue Sun is up to something and River knows it, either because she read it in the minds of some observer or though her psychic senses. Maybe they are going to put something like Pax in the food? Maybe "Textured protean" is just another brandname of Soylent Green. Whatever it is River knows about it and it was going to effect the crew (had we had more than one series.)

Indeed, it appears they even make Fruity Oaty bars - here's the first thing you see in the FOB commercial.

Originally Blue Sun Sun Corp was supposed to be the organization that labotomized River. However when Joss approached the good folks at Universal about making a Firefly movie, they told him to drop the Blue Sun sub plot. He did, and Blue Sun became Parliment.

Did anyone see the blue sun logo prior to firefly? I remember seein it over 6 years ago when I was still in highschool. I had to do a project for my computer graphics class and I used that image from the net to edit...Just curious if anyone had seen it prior to firefly and if so where it originally came from?

No he dosen't, and I can't provide a link. The article was posted on the old spacecast message board, which no longer exists.

CMOTD=Cut Me Own Throat Dibbler.

Edited to add: Actually, it may still exist. Go to www.spacecast.com and look in the Firefly section, there you should find a thread entitled:

Still Flying: The Firefly Thread. I think the piece is in there.

I went and looked through all 46 pages in that thread and I couldn't see it. I'm really interested if this is the case because Joss keeps going on record and saying that Universal "gets it" and didn't force any changes on him at all. Seems a little odd him saying that if they forced him to change bad guy.

Hummm, I see a panel question for this year's comicon.

My particular fan wank is that the reason why River lashed out at Blue Sun logos is not because Blue Sun did something to her, but because there's something of an internal war going on between the military side of the Alliance and the commercial side, and part of River's programming by the military arm reflects that. Alternatively, she simply psychically picked up on some Parliament member's hostility towards Blue Sun and was unconsciously acting that out.

The people who are experimenting on River are Blue Sun rather than Alliance, at least I think. The Alliance seem to just hire Blue Sun to do everything, manufacturer everything and have a complete monopoly on the core worlds. In the comics, the blue hand people are presumably Blue Sun since the Op is contacted at the end about the Blue Sun guys failing.

That last bit is not a logical progression. Because the Parliament calls in one of their own operatives, the "independent contractors" MUST be Blue Sun? There's no evidentiary link there at all.

And I don't know if this has anything to do with anything, but in S3 of Buffy (4 years before FF), Darling Violetta played the Bronze, performing a song called "Blue Sun." Then, one year later, DV wrote and recorded the awesome Angel theme song.

Just one more thing to tie the three shows together, I guess, along with Carlos Jacott, Jeff Ricketts, etc...

It doesn't seem logical that Joss would have Blue Sun corp. and the Blue Handed guys have the same color, unless he wanted us to think they were one in the same.

Blue Sun could have used River to blackmail Alliance into funding their projects.

Just a thought........

Actually I think the opposite is true. It would be just like him to misdirect us in that way. I wish we could find that comment about Universal because it would settle the question.
