Serenity was #3 for the week ending December 25th. I hope this is good news, considering how well the movies above it did at the box office, it would have to mean that a boatload of DVDs were sold for the BDM in the #3 slot!

I'd like to hear what others think about #3...the unfortunate thing is, that's probably as high as it's going to get on the sales charts since all the browncoats ran out and bought it when it came out. I'd love to hear actual sales numbers, but for now, this is all we have.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I had a suspicion that 40-Year Old Virgin would beat us, but not Four Brothers. I think it is a very respectable showing considering the nature of the release. It is very easy for us Browncoats to make the mistake that more people are aware of our show than is actually the case.

What? Penguins all the way down at # 7? Amazon had them (Full and Wide screen) a lot higher.

Question is, does this include institutional bulk sales to Blockbuster, Movie Gallery and their ilk? I can see them buying more copies of 40-Year-Old than of Serenity.

It's a hopeful sign, but what we need is some estimate of how many units were sold. Last week, according to the Hollywood Reporter, 40 Year Old Virgin sold about 3.7 million. But that was a sleeper hit which did way more business than we did.It sold more than three times what the next best movie did. If you figure that the average sales price for a Serenity DVD was 17 bucks, we'd need to sell about 2.5 million to reach an 80 million gross (38 million box office and 42 million in DVD sales). And that's just barely enough for Universal to consider a sequel. We'd be better off with 3 million or more in sales.

But, since only about 5 million people saw it here in the U.S., that's a hell of a high per centage to get. I hope that maybe some people who didn't go see it will buy it, but this is going to be a nailbiter.

Could someone please explain to me why they can not give us the actual sales figures? If it is ok to tell us exactly how much it made in theaters why is it so horrible to tell us what it made out of them?

To keep stars and directors from realizing how much money now comes from DVD sales? Seriously, it's kept very hush hush. Slate has written some articles about it and apparently there is some subscription-only site that the studios reveal the sales on, but it's not for the great unwashed.

This is strange. Box office gross is freely reported. Recorded music sales information is publicly available. TV viewership data is out there as well. Not sure what's different about home video sales.

Well, this is pretty damn good for the big damn movie. What with it going up against plenty of box office hits and coming in 3rd. And the FF box set is selling well again .

Heres hoping we Serenity stays in the top five next week.

Yeah, I have to think that it would be pretty good news, but I think the biggest question is whether or not it will have staying power. If it does, I think we're on a roll. If it drops out of the top five next week, or the week after, that might not be good.

And how come we're so low in the rental charts? Because (far as I've seen) the stores only have 5 or 6 copies of the BDM to rent!

Yep--I share your angst! Feel like stalking the customers at my local Blockbuster to boost rentals & sales. Hmmm...

There is no need we came in #3 in dvd sales behind two top grossing pictures. 4 Brothers made $92 mil worldwide and 40 year old virigin did $168 mil.

The reason we are so low in rentals cause there are not alot of copies to rent in the video stores. If we stay at the top for a while in sales, then we may get a sequel.

Well, actually at my neighbourhood Blockbuster (in Winnipeg), there are just as many copies of Serenity as 40-Year Old Virgin to rent. Which is a lot, as it takes up an entire section of the new release wall.

Also, there's more Serenity than that pile of crap Four Brothers. And when I went in to rent another movie this weekend, all of the copies of Serenity were out and still are today.

Shiny! Wonder if the manager has input in the amount of dvd's requested for a given movie. Perhaps the mgr. at your Blockbuster is a BD Fan! If so, we could have been making calls and requests--and could have tried to recruit the managers to our cause. What starts as a rental is a future sale. Hmmm.

I live in a major city and at both blockbuster and hollywood there were not that many copies of Serenity. On the other hand, 4 Bros and 40 Year Virgin had a whole wall.

The thing that really frustrates me is we have no idea how many units Serenity has sold. Serenity could be at the #3 spot and have sold a lot of copies. We may be only small percentage behind both blockbuster hits. We just don't know at this point.

If it's any consolation, I hit Blockbuster tonight to pick up a couple flicks, and noticed that they had twelve slots for Serenity - and all were empty! I'll take that as a good sign; it's been out for over a week, and they still can't keep it on the rental shelf (Four Brothers and 40-Year-Old Virgin were both in stock, and they only have 8 slots on the shelf for Four Brothers).

Good thing I bought my copy of Serenity when it hit the stores! :)

Doing my part for December 29th sales and, I hope for FFF.net, I ordered a Firefly set, Serenity (widescreen) and The Visual Companion tonight, coming back here to click through for each item so we'd be abso-but-lutely sure to get credit for them.
Go, Firefly and Serenity!
