River leaning down and sniffing the bed in the capture of Inara is priceless.

Also does anyone else get really annoyed that the guards who chase river and Simon in the facility aren't wearing blue gloves? Woulda been just sooooo perfect and easy to do

IIRC, they did not put on the blue gloves in "Ariel" until they pulled out their hemorrhage inducing laser pointer. I don't think they wear them all of the time.

When the crew is holding off the reavers at Mr. Universe's place, two of the large, long crates they take cover behind (and later lie and bleed on) look remarkably like coffins. Reminded me of Reservoir Dogs... does anyone else think so?

I think I noticed most of this stuff upon the second theater viewing, but there are a few things I wouldn't have picked up on without hints from the web. I just watched the scene where River works on the repairs with tears in her eyes - maybe those are the repairs Wash would have done? The whole cigar thing between Jayne and Book was pretty cool. I hadn't realized they were becoming such good friends, but now I see Jayne does have what appears to be a bible on the table next to his gun during the "I aim to misbehave" speach. I also noticed how many cool shirts Jayne has. (Lame, maybe, but I like Jayne!)

Don't hate me, but I love the soundtrack. It's probably because of the cello in the Serenity theme, and I used to play. I like the Firefly music, but it has a lot more guitar and violin. I'm in the minority among my friends, but to each their own.

Jayne: I once hit a guy in the neck from 500 yards with a bent scope. Don't that count upstairs?
Book: Oh, it'll be taken into consideration.
Jayne: You made that sound kind of ominous.

The little boy in Haven is breathing while he's laying there 'dead'. Guess Kaylee shoulda been calling Simon?

When Jayne isn't holding a gun or smoking a cigar, he's EATING! Every casual shot of Jayne he's got food in his mouth or a drink in his hand! I love it!

Did the bullet that got Simon not go all the way through? Or did the Alliance guys that patched them up have a sterile tissue mender? 'Cause there's no scar on his back when he and Kaylee are making out.

Adam has very good enunciation. I'm hearing 'Three full mags and my swinging cod, That's all.' The subtitles do say "three, four, max" but I clearly hear the l-sound and the g in mags.

OMIGOD! Is that the Big Red Button behind Jayne's head during the Reaver fight?????

Just had to add that I in no way see Jayne not knowing how much ammo he has left down to the very last bullet.
That's his job, and we know it's one of the few things he does very very well. "Three, four, max." would mean that he really doesn't know what they have left.
I claim "Three full mags, and my swinging cod."

Someone ask Adam exactly what he said, next time they get a chance.

thanks a bunch =) oh another thing, I just wanted to see if I was the only noob that took my friend explaining to me what the operative meant when he said in the end "there is nothing left to see"
my friend explained to me .. the whole thing about his character being a samurai based character...and basically he went and ended his life because of his huge failure in his task/mission...
that totally like winded past me every time I saw it up till my friend talked about it...I was like grr me is dumb LOL

A great reference to the series: When Mal is talking to Inara after waking up, you can see all the scars on his body from previous fights. The most noticeable one being the knife wound on his chest from Crow in The Train Job. If you look close enough you can also see the scar on his stomach from being tortured by Niska on War Stories, and the bullet wound on his shoulder from the pilot.

Operative: "I want us to resolve this like civilized men. I'm not threatening you, I'm unarmed..."

Mal: "Good."

Okay, go to the deleted scenes, and check out the one where The Operative is discussing Mal & crew with the nameless Ensign. Freeze frame the computer read-out and zoom in.

1. It lists Mal's military rank correctly (ie Sergeant).

2. Both Mal and Zoe are listed as "Nontrialed Browncoat". This would indicate that "Browncoat" is an official term for an Independent soldier, instead of a mere nickname as previously assumed -- and further suggests that at least some Browncoats were brought to trial for something or other. (Presumably the vast majority were given a blanket amnesty, as in the American Civil War.)

3. Mal is listed as one of only two survivors of the battle of Serenity. Since 33% of the Browncoats survived the battle, this must refer only to Mal and Zoe's home unit, the 57th Overlanders, of which they were truly the only survivors. (AKA "Balls and Bayonettes Brigade" -- a term which also appears on the readout, making it official as well.)

Ghod, sometimes I love living in the digital era.

In answer to your request, I hope these help. :)

http://www.nd.edu/~jspies/serenity.html

In answer to the second, right before Mal switches off all of the com channels showing the Operative face, just after the Haven Massacre, Mal begins:

"You think I care? *spoken with surpresed rage*
"Of course youn care." *Spoken with quiet subtlty*
You're not a Reaver, Mal. You're a human man and you'll never understand how--"

In this moment of examination of character, the Operative unwittingly inspires Mal to "bunger" the entire Alliance fleet with a plan that actually boarders on completely insane, by the standard of rational that the Operative was applying to Mal's overall character. The kind of plan an honorable man would need to outwit a foe that believes his quarry doesn't have the WILL to do the something so coldly sacriligious that other men of will would be willing to do.

It is from the show.

If memory serves (it often doesn't) it is from the last scene of Objects in Space, it's a long take that included everyone in the cast, and Summer was at the end. So everything would be going perfectly and then she'd mess it up.

Whenever that happened Nathan yelled, "Summer!" Then he messed up a take right at the start and, even though Summer was two rooms over and in no way responsible, yelled, "Summer!" as if it was her fault.

That caught on so any time something went wrong, even if she wasn't on set, they'd yell, "Summer!"

Again, my memory is highly fallible.

Also in the blooper that followed the "SUMMER!" exclemation, Nathan's line should have had the words "some are". However he said it sooo quickly with his natural drawl that it actually came out sounding more like the word (or name) Summer. Just wanted to slide that by. :)

One of the absolute funniest moments in "Serenity" I missed until my third theatre viewing was after the Reaver skif had crashed into Serenity after the Barn Swallow manuver.

Kaylee comes racing down to the cargo bay, concern in her eyes. As she does she comes upon Jayne who is blocking up the staircase as he tries to remove the Reaver arrow that is lodged in his leg. When suddenly, Kaylee very brusquly shoves him out of the way, her eyes never once even moving away from Simon long enough to even ackowledge Jayne, before exclaming her frightened concern for Simon's safety. :D

Kaylee's downright cold blooded "non-use" shove for the completly in-the-way Jayne and his subsiquent groan and grimmace as he is pushed aside like so much useless meat, just kill me everytime I get to this point in the BDM. :D

Call me blind, but during the skiff chase when the reavers roped Jayne, I never noticed that they sent a spike through his calf. It just happened so fast and I was just so into the moment that it never registered that they shot a spike through his leg! I just assume they roped him by the foot.

Ouch...

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

Except for the deleted scene references, ( I've not checked those out yet ), I got all but 2 or 3 of those listed.

Most of those I caught, but a few make more sense after some explantion. River crying as she works on the wiring is one I didn't catch, but should have.

The parasol resembling Kaylees didn't register either. I'll have to check that out next viewing.

One of my favorites is the Op talking to Mal after Book's death, telling Mal he's not a Reaver... I caught Mals facial expression the very first time, especially with what follows.

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

Other things I noticed now:

- During the end when Zoe is in her own world after losing Wash. When Mal and Jayne toss those grenades down the hall everyone takes cover, but Zoe just stands there. Even when the grenades go off, she doesn't even flinch.

- Also during the end, for the first time ever that I can recall, Inara is wearing pants. Very baggy pants, but still pants.

Do you want the actual recording of it?

Try this. Once you click on the site, it will take about 45 seconds for the site to upload the song. There is a bar on the top right of the screen that counts down until it will say "Click here to download." Also, there is a small box that comes down just before the countdown stops, just click the X to close out of that so you can click to download.

I hope this works for you.

THESOAPBOXER

It's late on New Year's Eve. I got a lot of 'em.

*During the hovermule chase, there's a very very quick shot of the Reaver shooting the razor wheel at the mule (the one that pins the cartrige case down). His head and arm are popping halfway out of a crack in the hule of the Reaver ship. Interestingly (or, more probably, not) the second razor wheel (that flies by Mal's head as he's trying to shoot the tether is not shot from a gun, but rather tossed by a kind of catapult system where the Reaver used to be.

*When Mal tries sneaking up on River on the bridge while she's looking for Miranda, River points the gun at him without turning to look. This shot is very reminiscant to a shot in "Objects in Space" when Simon tries sneaking up on Jubal in the cargo bay. Jubal points his gun at Simon without turning around, just as River does.

*Something I noticed in Joss's commentary, he describes the Operative exactly the same way as he describes Jubal in his "OiS" commentary: "not psychic, but intuitive enough to be considered psychic."

*Something I noticed in theaters, but not mentioned anywhere (to the bestest of my knowledge), in the Maidenhead bar, the anchor reporting on the Lilac Reaver attack says, "No Alliance government has ever confirmed the existance of Reavers." Hmm. I wonder why?

*The "NOT MANDATORY" flashing in the background of the Oaty Bar commercial. What a weird disclaimer...

*Some split second shots during River's triggering: River's "evil eyes" transposed over the octopus' eyes; two shots of Reavers (one looks like a stone statue, the other is the Reaver who kills the woman on Lilac); a terraforming station (on Miranda perhaps?).

*Asians in Beaumonde! (Not being racist, it's just I didn't see any that much in the series, so it was good to see that the second half of the Alliance is still represented.)

*Mal looks royally pissed in his "mug shot" when the Operative is researching him. Hee.

*Same scene: Mal's listed as recieving valor commendation for the Battle of Serenity. Who awarded him? The Independents before they crumbled in defeat? The Alliance out of respect?

*Same scene: Mal's DNA is on record.

*Serenity has a pasta maker in the dining room.

*Mal has a map of Earth-That-Was in his bunk.

*The Alliance soldier that was blew up Haven was surrendering (hands in the air) when Mal shot him.

*Jayne cuddling with his big gun as they're going through Reaver space.

*Mr. Universe's planet is "pretty damn close" to Miranda.

*A cartoon of Snow White is being played on one of Mr. Universe's screens. Not sure of the significance exactly, but Joss references Snow White several times in his commentary.

* The red paint (and all other color except for grey) disappears as Serenity crashes into Mr. Universe's building.

Peace and Goodwill.

I noticed in the scene where Inara waves Mal, as he stumbles out of bed you can see an ancient style map of North & South America on the wall above his bunk. 500 years in the future, and how many solar systems away, and he STILL has a map of Earth-that-was on his wall. FUN-NY!

Of course, to see this, we have to stop looking at our half-naked captain--something that's just a bit tough to do.

DONCOAT

* When Serenity takes off from Haven with its "hood ornaments", the atmospheric friction is enough to turn the corpses into skeletons, but not (apparently) enough to burn through the ropes that hold them there. Nor to burn away the red paint, or even char it. Perhaps they used special high-temp rope and paint designed for spacecraft hulls.

* There is director's commentary and subtitling on the deleted scenes as well as the main movie.

* One CGI scene (or is it model work?) doesn't ring true. During the crash landing, before it enters the "hanger area", one shot of the sliding Serenity just seems too slow, as if it's already nearly stopped. Perhaps this was intended to represent a "slow motion" effect, but it's a bit jarring to my eye -- takes me out of the moment. That's the only such case in the film. Too bad it happens at such a critical and tense time.

* I think I've discovered the splice in the "oner" shot (ship tour during opening credits). I knew it happened as Mal and Simon head downstairs. Now I think I see exactly where it occurs: just as Mal's head disappears, the instant before the camera swings around to pick up Simon. Could be wrong, though. Them Hollywood boyz is tricksy.

-- Good catch re the Earth-That-Was map. I've often wondered how much is remembered about ETW and how accurately. It's fairly ancient history for the people in the new system, and not very relevant to thier current lives and concerns. An even better question is: if there were some (most) left behind on ETW, are we still in communication with them?

TENTHCREWMEMBER

Could you please just make it stranger? Stranger. Odder. Could be weirder. More bizarre. How about uncanny?

Some I noticed in theatre, some on DVD, and I am not going to point out the innumerable "nods" to the series, except my favs:

*When Mal & Inara are in the shuttle (deleted scene) there is some Mars Rover-esque thing hanging in the netting.

*I forget the exact scene at the moment, but Wash is talking to others onboard Serenity and in the background there is one of those "solar system mobiles" except the "sun" is red and it only has a couple of orbital bodies...so I assume it is of a planetary system, question is which one?

*Following Serenity's "downy feather" landing where the really odd-looking (to some peoples) feet on the landing gear come out, the next scene is River coming down behind Mal in bare feet. Foot fetish much Mr. Whedon? LOL!

*Animals:
Duck - opening scene in the "school" behind young river in the pond
Lizard - in a cage in the Maidenhead
Goldfish - in a bowl in Mr. U's HQ
(someone in the theatre was like "Animal Trainer?" during the credits, so my attention to detail immediately blurted these out )
Llamas - well, in my fractured reality matrix!

*The subtitles during the Joss Interview on the DVD, Joss says "Millenium Falcon"...apparently the same doofus who subtitled "You're a rabbit, Mal" (instead of "Gorramit, Mal") in The Message subtitled this "Millenium Vulcan".

*The coffin crates in the final battle with the Reavers look like the crate that had Tracey's body in The Message episode.

*Inara's weapon...they didn't cgi the shots with her in the background while Jayne was in focus...so she has a Boltgun, NO! a Bow!, no wait...a BOLTGUN!, what the...a bow again??? Gorramit! Clean this up for the Special Edition DVD please!

*When Serenity crashes onto the runway, the model seperates slightly (top & bottom halves)

*The three colored skulls on the Hover Mule, reminiscent of the jolly roger on the front of the old mule

*Oh, and to add to the "scar" list for Mal, he also has the scar from Shindig on his right side, to go along with the other 3.

*The movie, in contrast to Book's statement "No I don't", tells you all about Book, in point of fact. Sure, it is general terms, but he tips this when he tells Mal the Op is the kind of man who "Believes hard. Kills and never asks why." Book was that man, once upon a time...Catholicism filled that void when he left that world behind, whatever his reasons, he needed something to believe in, which is why he knew Mal needed the same. Inara reaffirms this as well.

*When River cocks the gun at Mal, right after he says "...you best shoot me right now", the gun doesn't budge. Not a breath...so it had to be on a stand of some sort, for Summer's benefit and to keep the gun in its dramatic position, yes?

*(for fun)Mr. U is played by the same actor who played Bernard the Elf in the Santa Clause...also a bit of a recluse with an near unlimited supply of tech surrounding someone who "didn't exist".

*One of Mr. U's screens shows scenes from a cartoon with a dinosaur in it...this helps cement the relationship between him and Wash by pointing out their similar characteristics (such as love for wacky ETW history and sense of humor)

*During the battle scene between the Reavers and the Alliance (and this is my favorite fun moment), one of the Reaver ships harpoons an Alliance ship and starts spinning, swinging the Alliance ship, around and around. This not only shows how insane they are, but how intelligent Reavers are (to design a ship that can not only do that, but they then use their prey as a projectile weapon against a larger ship...and I believe that is when Serenity gets hit by a chunk and Wash tells Mal "It's okay! I am a leaf on the wind!")

*The expressions on Wash's face as he is doing all that fancy flying during the battle. I swear he creamed his shorts!

*The lines "Y'all are Browncoats, eh? Fought in the war for Independence?" etc. are actually Joss Whedon's voice.

*There is another Firefly in the background when Serenity is docking on Beaumonde

*The Reaver Trans-U ship from the episode Serenity is "wingman" (to your left as you view it) when the Reaver fleet emerges from the ion storm

*The ship Mal shoots with the cannon looks very much like a Reaverfied version of Jubal Early's craft from Objects in Space & Trash (yes, it is in Trash...go watch it now until you see it! )

*Zoe crashes through some storefront awning and stuff as they run from town and the Reavers. Then the Reavers pass the same storefront and it is perfectly in tact.

*"That man back in town" was the guy who wanted to be a "hero", who was left defenseless when he tossed his gun away and it slid under a skid of stuff in the store...so really Zoe is also to blame! And she wanted to blame Mal, Ha!

*And lastly, Wash died due to having a giant pointy stick run through him...anyone else notice this?

thanks a bunch =) oh another thing, I just wanted to see if I was the only noob that took my friend explaining to me what the operative meant when he said in the end "there is nothing left to see"
my friend explained to me .. the whole thing about his character being a samurai based character...and basically he went and ended his life because of his huge failure in his task/mission...
that totally like winded past me every time I saw it up till my friend talked about it...I was like grr me is dumb LOL

anyone else miss this?

I'm not sure if you're saying that the Operative went off to kill himself, but if you are, I want to say that I don't think that is the case.

His character is similar to a samurai, obviously, but I think the whole point is that by the end of the movie he has LOST that system of belief. The "old" operative would quite likely have killed himself for failing in his mission, but now, even THAT sense of self has been destroyed. He is an empty shell without even that belief anymore.

(This is clearer in the extended deleted scene where he asks Mal how he goes on after losing his belief.)

GROOSALUGG

I don't think either of these were mentioned yet:

- In the Oaty Bar ad as River's watching it in the Maidenhead, for a split-second you can see the embedded code running through the octupus' body. Kinda obvious, too, but I hadn't noticed it before.

- On one of Mr. Universe's screens, the same Blue Sun commercial is playing as was seen in "Ariel." (Mr. U's first scene, just as he mentions the "puppet theater", on the far right; a woman drinking from a can).

Two things I noticed:

-During the start of the Reaver shootout, Jayne AND Mal both toss ss outside, yet you only hear one explosion.

-The DVD packaging is very shiny ;-P

Uh, please?

DAMROD

Not sure about this one, but when Serenity lands at Beaumonde, there is a maintenance man standing there when the crew gets off and he has a big 8 on his shoulder and I seem to remember that in the Postman with Kevin Costner, the soldiers all had 8's on thier arms. Could be wrong, possible related or not, just a thought.

The hover car also reminded me of Blade Runner hover cars.

So much too see and am glad that you are pointing them out!! Thanks!!!

Have a better one!!!

Sorry to bump this gigantic thread but THIS is weird:
@ 43:10 I hear Simon say:
"..but I am.."
Just after asking River if he was talking
to Miranda now. It's not in the subtitles.
Audio editing booboo?
kinda spooky ;]

I spotted this while watching the DVD: I think the Reaver in the Miranda recording is the same Reaver who River punches at the begining of that fight scene. Aside from apparently being played by the same actor, the Reaver in the recording had a fresh wound on his right cheek -- the Reaver that River punched had a scar on his right cheek.

If so, it's a nice bit of syncronicity, since the recording's being broadcast during that part of the fight.

(first post)

When watching the DVD I noticed that in the scene where Kaylee is telling Simon and River about what kind of ships to look for River looks like she's wearing a jacket rather similar to the one Kaylee wears in the pilot. I don't actually think it's the same one because I thik the lengths are different but it made me smile for a minute, thinking that maybe Kaylee gave River her jacket as a goodbye present.

ROBINHOOD

When we first meet Mr Universe, on one of his screens there's a an advert. A girl drinking from a blue sun fizzy drink can, the very same 'ad', infact, from the episode 'Ariel' when Jayne is contacting the authorities on the comms center inside the hospital, to do the dirty on them.

One thing I just noticed today is Mal's actual age. On the series DVDs we never get an outright statement of the date, but I was watching the SciFi marathon earlier, and the voice-over intro at the beginning also contains text that tells us the date the series is set: 2517 AD.

The Serenity DVD (the Operative's screens) tells us that Mal was born in 2468, which makes him 49 years old, possibly 50 by the time the Serenity action rolls around! I must say, Mal has aged *very* well, don't y'all think?

Also, Zoe is shown in the deleted Operative scene to be born in 2484, which makes her only 33/34 in the timeline.

PACRAT

OK, I'm a bit slow, and too lazy to read all the responses (carefully)...

But did anyone else besides me, hubby and son notice that when the operative reads Mal's war records, his rank is listed as "Captian" not "sergant"? Maybe its just 'cause hubby's retired AF, or just 'cause I've watched the poor DVD so many times, that the player is starting to cringe!

Don't mean to nit-pick, but its odd. When do we get the "uncut" version?? any ideas?

I haven't read them all, so sorry if someone's already posted this.
When the crew descends the stairs at the Maidenhead, in the background you can her a news reporter-like person saying something about people being locked inside of a vault and that the Alliance has never confirmed nor denied the existence of Reevers.--Remember when Mal tells the guard to get those people inside the vault so that they won't be attacked by the Reevers. I thought that was cool.
Also, when they get to Mr. Universe's planet and Mal leaves the crew behind at the blast doors, it pans all of to everyone--Jayne, Zoe, Kaylee, Simon, River and Inara. It's hard to tell it's Inara, though because she's looking back down the hall where Mal went--like she's missing him.

Wacky fun!

CHERRYBOMB

When they are sitting around the kitchen table right after Miranda, Jayne drinks out of a bottle, then passes it to Simon, who also drinks.
Call me crazy, but this is one of my favorite parts. It really shows how they've settled their differences, despite their continuing bickering.

LIMINALOSITY

OH goody! I've been out of town and haven't had a chance to search for this thread of detail silliness that I [knew you guys would have started since the DVD release. Yippie! More details!

I loved the opportunity to watch the thick bits on slo-mo too...the outtake of 'the Op looks at service records' has a bit with Zoe's picture, and doesn't she just look dispirited and ragged.

The film clips and stuff on the screens in Mr Uni's 'office space" I won't blare on about, because Don (master of detail) and theSoapBoxer already mentioned the dino reference and the Snow White, but did you notice the way these two cartoon characters look at the scene in horror as the Op stabs Mr Uni? I liked that part of it too. If anyone knows what those two characters are about, reference-wise, enlighten, please.

When they're coming up on Miranda, as the rest of the crew watches Reaverworldcentral in fear and loathing, Jayne shifting back and forth clutching the substitute Vera like a blankie, River sits at the very front of the group, gazing past all of this, rapt at Miranda.

Love the Haven outtake! Love it! "Hood ornament, Dirtnap, steal their shit", Bwah haa ha, thanks Nathan, what a total maniac.

Oh, one more thing. When Serenity finally comes to rest in the bay at Mr Uni's, the view on the cortex screen behind Wash's head that shows planetary positions swings back and forth for a second to reorient, then snaps into place with a new orientation. Just another fabulous tidbit.

Whew, scary-long post. *squidges all the detail freaks* thanks guys!
*edit to add* Bwah haa haa that's even scary longer than I thought. Removed some rant from this post.

Shiny Trees! Yavanna made Shiny Trees!

I would have to say my favorite thing about Serenity/Firefly is the sheer fact that Mal is more the anti-hero than he is the hero (as pertaining to all other heroes in movies). For instance when he is talking to Zoe before going to rescue Inara he says "If something happens, if i dont contact you, you take this ship, and you come get me." Rather than the usual line of "If im not back in...(cliche line) you get out of here." I just love that it makes Mal seem more naturally human instead of some kinda superhero.
