Going back to those Christmas crackers, my grandma surprised everyone during breakfast today and broke out a whole bunch of 'em. She said 'I saw everyone buying them up at the store, figured I'd get some and see what all the fuss is about.' So here's a wonderful little chestnut for y'all:

Q: Why are elephants large and wrinkly?

A: Because if they were small, white and smooth, they would be aspirin!

Ha-HA!

But yeah, it was quite a sight, seeing an entire family of Jugheads sitting around the breakfast table, in our little paper crowns and all.

(did anyone get that?)

I know what you mean about the christamssy music - my sister got a copy of the the fragile, so me, my mom, my sister and my four year old neice all boogying away whilst making dinner, My father telling us it sounds like a funeral dirge.

More wine dad?

*Dips a toe in the jacuzzi*

Oo, this is nice.
I've no idea how you play billiards, but if you're willing to teach, i'm in. I have to warn you though, i'm the queen of beginners luck.

edit - after setting the challenge, i ended up not getting any jokes today, we had 'disney princess' crackers, and they had questions about the stories in instead of jokes.
will have to buy a box and regale you with the mirth(lessness)

Climb on in. I'll happily teach you Billiards. Which is known to many as simply Pool. Like "9 ball in the corner pocket". It's simple physics really, plus geometry.
*Gives Seryn a heavy stick and stands back*
Yea just like they played in the beginning of "the train job", only without the holograms and the fighting.

what about the petty (cough, sorry, suo-xi)theft?

as there are no strangers here i'll take that as a no.

Ah, see if billiards is just pool, then my beginners luck is cancelled out, we're just relying on my fabulous (lack of) skill.

*hefts stick, feels weight and looks down length assesing bendiness*

*checks to see is anyone is buying the 'yeah, I know what i'm doing' routine*

Nevermind, I assume we have to wait until we get out of the Jacuzzi to play?

there can be petty theft, and we don't have wait until we're out of the jacuzzi to play, only to play pool.

I got another joke today similar to the piano one.

*Wraps a very long towel around himself and goes to collect trunks. Wonders why he even bothers putting them on, but puts them on anyway. Wanders over to the pool table and collects a cue.*

Hey, Nice rack.

Wha..? no, I mean the balls being tight......on the table. Geez, can't even play a friendly game of pool without people getting all gutter minded and such.
You wanna break?
*makes a few drinks*
I always shoot pool better after a couple.

Were you talking about a 'Bar billiards' table, or a Snooker table? Those are different. But what's known as a pool table and what's known as a Billiards Table are commonly refered to as the same. Try a Google image search for 'billiards table'. 90% or more have pockets. Only the 'french bar billiards' etc are different. 'Sides I just wanted to play some pool. I'll fetch a fresh 'Pool' Table if need be. But Playing pool, and playing 'in the' pool are two different things. So, no diving into the pool table.

The game of billiards I was taught was played with three balls only and on a table with no pockets. You can play it on a regular pool table, but considering the goal is to hit all three balls every shot, the pockets tend to limit the possible angles for a serious game. just FYI. This is the nook where game need not have rules so, whatever!

*note to self - next time you try to strand someone in a public pool, take the towels as well...*

I am very lucky to have a family who likes similar things to me, not sure whether they liked it before or if it was my extraordinary powers of persuasion. Currently working on converting them to Firefly, Wonderfalls and Carnivale. So far mother hooked on carnivale, mom and her boyfriend hooked on wonderfalls and sister and mom desperate to see firefly, moms boyfriend already hooked, had him since I leant him the first disc and he went out and baught himself the boxset -he's even wearing one of those black sillicone bans that say 'browncoat'.

As an interesting aside, my neice came in when I was watching an episode once, her exact words were

"so there are all these boys and girls on a big ship"

"yep, they're the crew, the nice people" I reply (the world of television still being divided into nice people and naughty people at four years old)

"and they shoot all the people"

"maybe not so nice then"

but you have to admit it sums it up reasonably well

swift change of tangent

The only time i've ever seen a game of billiards in progress was when Lizzy walks in on Darcy in the BBC Pride and Predjudice adapt. That table may have had pockets, though don't quote me on that - Darcy was on the screen.

It would be interesting to find out how many different variations there actually are -probably at least two for every european country, the UK and each individual American state. I could write a book, and wouldn't even have to check for spelling mistakes, 'cause no bugger'd ever bother to read it.

I'm waffling.

My basic pool/billiards/snooker game tactic is use the stick to hit the white ball, hope that it hits another ball and celebrate with a certain amount of girly squealing and jumping on the spot when said ball actually goes in a pocket.

'tis fun, more so when alcohol is involved. I'll have one of those drinks

Have you got Winamp? If you look at the media library on Winamp 5 it has an online media section, click ShoutCast TV and scroll down to the ess.tv channels.

There's Family Guy, South Park, Futurama, X-Files, Scrubs, The Simpsons, Red Dwarf, MST3K, Malcolm in the Middle, Lost, various Star Treks, 24, loads of great shows...

and they just started showing FireFly (well first time I've noticed it) so as you can tell, quality shows all the way...

Cthulhu, awesome. I really dig H.P. Lovecraft's stories; kinda partial to Dagon, myself.

Gah...some jerk Christian film critic over at AOL.com referred to Serenity as 'wholesome fluff'. Even had the nerve to lump it in with March of the Penguins.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed March of the Penguins, but where does he get off comparing the two?

CALLMESERENITY

Was that english you were typing just then JH?

Those are the kinds of creepy stuffed animals that would keep me up at night when I was little.

I had this stuffed peapod (yes, a peapod) with huge eyes when I was little and every night before I went to bed, I had to make sure it was in my closet, because if not, I couldn't sleep because it would be LOOKING AT ME.
