I just read this from the Toronto Star, who had an interview with Joss Whedon.

This is from today, Dec 19th.

He hasn't given up all hope, and neither should we. Let's keep this hope going!

Browncoats are fans of Firefly and its movie offspring, Serenity.

The name is taken from the losing side (not necessarily the wrong side) of the Unification war -- see Serenity (the pilot episode), The Train Job, etc.

The short answer ? Browncoats = Firefly/Serenity fans.

Clearly, many Buffy/Angel fans came to love Firefly as well, but not all. One may be a fan of Joss Whedon, and not 'get' Firefly, and thus are not Browncoats. ( Hey, I've seen it happen, honest ) Conversely, there are plenty of Browncoats who fell in love w/ Firefly on its own, maybe never having watched Buffy/Angel at all.

Well...

hate to say, "I told you so" but...

"I TOLD YOU SO!!!!!!"

Now if only the naysayers would read this too...

Nah, it'd be too much work for 'em. Plus it'd require using some brain muscles that are probably atrophied by now, due to stubbornnes... So yea.

As the Shadow native would say, "We're good, people."

P.S.: And please notice he said, "all the actors". As in ALL the actors.

That gave me a happy. No, really. It did.

That is why there has been so much negativity lately from non fans. You know those people who became members of this forum just to say mean things to get fans upset. They see the good news and know we still have a chance for a sequel but want to dash our hopes anyway. Now, it is time for us to see it too!

Serenity is #1 on Amazon and that is just based on preoders. There are some people like my brother who saw the movie, liked it, and will buy it on DVD when it comes out even though they know very little about the tv series. So, there is still hope for great DVD sales.

ZOID

flywithmecaptn and fellow 'coats:

Well, I'm still hopin'. It's all I've been doing since Firefly went "on hiatus" back in December of 2002. I heard the movie was coming in January '04 and got all excited. I read the stories of folks sneaking onto the lot during filming in summer of '04 and got more excited. I heard rumors -- post-production -- that Serenity would be released direct-to-DVD rather than theatrically and got worried. Then it was announced that the BDM would definitely be released in theatres 20 April 2005, and I was relieved. Then, just months short of that goal (like, November of '04) came the news that we had been bumped to the last day of September '05. Another six months to wait?!

But wait we did. What choice did we have? Could we just quit the love of our lives and find some other girl to court? Not a chance.

As September approached, the country was ravaged by not one but two disastrous Gulf Coast hurricanes. Quite apart from the heart-rending devastation in coastal areas, fuel prices hit every American pocketbook, per-gallon gasoline prices increasing by over a dollar and a quarter, nationwide. Folks, that's a lot of entertainment budget drying up. The movie came and went while the nation mourned and tightened its collective belt.

Mind you, I still paid for 12 seats, personally. But, the theatres were mostly empty, not just for Serenity, but for everything else showing at the time (you know, like that big-budget Jodie Foster flick, whatchamacallit). Bad timing, similar to F*x's singleminded devotion to the MLB playoffs of 2002, spelled doom for our chances at the box office, this time out. Our 'BDM' is a 'BDBOF' (Big Damn Box Office Failure).

Them's the facts. But we ain't through yet. It's just time for us to pull off some of our usual thrillin' heroics, yet again. Other movies -- like "Underworld" and Universal's "Chronicles of Riddick", for example -- have done enough business in DVD sales to offset less than enthusiastic 'box' and sparked talks about sequels.

We, the Browncoats, can trump those performances and get Serenity into the black again -- both artistically and fiscally -- where she belongs.

It's all about belief, as the good Shepherd Book put it. I believe we will make Serenity a success. We didn't have enough time to make her a box office success; but, we can buy DVDs 'til the cows come home, without the burden of a theatre-owner's whimsy.

And, finally, I believe we will see our ship and crew again, on the big screen or small; because this is a free-market society, and if we throw enough money at the studio, someone will shimmy on over and scoop it up, and serve us up another helping.

So, I'm not just hoping, I am believing that Serenity will fly again...

Faithfully,

zoid

P.S.
And please, God... Er, Joss... Let Zoe be pregnant with Wash's child in the sequel, as she revealed was her heart's desire, in HoG. It's the only way to partly make up for his death. I have longed to hear Gina -- a classically trained mezzosoprano -- croon a lullaby since that episode. How heart-breaking would that be? Maybe The Ballad of Serenity, hmmm?

I still say we just send Wash to the Genesis planet. It worked before.
Little Wash, huh? Name him Dri.
I am still optimistic about another series/film. However, you were right about this being a crappy year box-office-wise. I work at a movie theater and not even "Star Wars" or "Harry Potter" or even "King Kong" have pulled us out of our slump. This confuses me, as most of the movies I've seen this year I enjoyed. Case in point, I saw "Serenity," having never seen the show. I enjoyed it, Netflixed the series and wound up getting my wife hooked. Then WE went and saw the movie.
We're totally geeking out on this.

*finishes sawing off horns with a hack-saw*

Well, when the economy is down, the first place people cut back is entertainment, and at 10$ a ticket in some places it's just too expensive to go to the movies every week. I've tried to pick and choose what I see this year pretty carefully - if it needs the big screen for effects etc, I'll see it in the theater. If not, wait for DVD.

Of course, I saw Serenity four times, and Potter twice... soooooooooooo....

OH, NOOOOOO, NOT WASH, PLEASE NOT WASH!!!! I haven't seen Serenity yet---no, it can't be true---tell me it's not true that he got killed!!

All the Nine have to be there, they all have to continue on in the future---you break my heart! And no baby ever makes up for the loss of a man---it's too awful for words. I don't think I can even bear to watch the movie now---that last Firefly episode "The Message" was heartrending enough.

The only one who gives me a tiny glimmer of hope is RUALion:

Wash could come back... maybe not in corporeal form. River seems like she should be very good at channeling the dead... Damn Zoid, I have missed having you around the site my friend, and it is exactly this type of post that I missed.

Zoid hit it right on the head browncoats. People laughed when we said that we weren't done, and we got a movie. Okay, so people didn't turn out except for the browncoats and those sci fi fans that have more than a limited scope of what good sci fi is. That's the past, over & done with, nothing to be done about it now. No sense focusing on it anymore.

What we need to focus on is what we do have, and what we have is the Serenity DVD. We need to hype it up. We need to buy it, give it as gifts, and push it harder than we ever pushed series DVD. Our hopes for a sequel ride on the DVD sales.

DVD sales carried us before. It is because of DVD sales that we got the BDM. Now DVD sales will make the difference again.

I know some have complained that the burden shouldn't be on them, that they should not be expected to buy more than one DVD. I don't think anyone expects you to do more than you can. If you can only afford one DVD, then just buy one. Of course that doesn't mean you can't talk up the DVD to your friends & family. You can loan that DVD out to get people interested. Do what you can, that is all I or anyone can ask of you.

Keep flyin' browncoats. The story ain't done yet. Ignore the naysayers. They were wrong about us before. I'm thinking we'll rise again.

Here, here browncoat1

Thank you for your comments. Everytime a post is added to the thread like this it keeps my hopes high and helps me believe that we can make a difference and who knows, maybe the show will come back. If not, maybe a movie will, just like the first time.

I did buy my DVD yesterday!

Don't forget to call him "Sir." He likes that.

WUHDEMA

I am new to the Firefly/Serenity Verse, and I must say that I am impressed. I was never a "Buffy" fan so when I heard that Joss was making a new series I passed on it, I couldn't have been more wrong. It was not until the buzz of the movie that I started to take notice of the show, this mostly due to you all. The devotion you have shown to this series is something truly amazing. It was the fact that you all fought to get this movie made that caused me to rent the series. I was hooked from the start. I watched the first two discs then promptly went out and bought the series. Then Tuesday I actually had to stand in line to buy the movie.

You all should be proud of the work you have done. You made it possible for the story to continue, and for that I am in awe. I am proud to say that I have joined the ranks of the many Browncoats out there, and am eager to do my part.

Keep flying
